  • Blacksmithing - Forging A Throwing Spear from a Car Spring (Heavy Javelin)
    In this video Adam Rhein forges and crafts a throwing spear, inspired by a Saxon throwing spear or heavy javelin.
    This was such a fun build! Let me know what you think in the comments section.

    Blacksmithing is dangerous. I've been burned, had my fingers squished, got stuck by metal splinters and been bludgeoned by stray pieces of metal... Wear your PPE and be safe out there. (Kids... do not try this without parental supervision.)

    I use all-weather wood glue on burlap fabric and twine- makes it hard as a bloody rock! Try it on your handle wrap- you'll never have to replace it. Remember to sand the wood first.

      @AdamRhein that is the beautiful thing about blacksmithing. we all learn from each other and improve every time we forge. As long as we view ourselves as students, even if we are master smith's the blacksmith/bladesmiths just get better.

    We must get a good killing lance and always have it on board. You can make the blade from a spring leaf from an old Ford. We can grind it in Guanabacoa. It should be sharp and not tempered so it will break. My knife broke.

    It looked like you fluxed it during the heat treat. If you did why? If you didn’t what did you do?

    • @AdamRhein
      @AdamRhein  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I flux it to keep the carbon content as high as possible during heat treat. If I don't flux it, some of the carbon will migrate out of the steel when It gets exposed to the air. The flux protects it to some degree. It isn't perfect, but it is way better than just exposing it to the air.

    Yo Adameister! It's me again, I have a question, how come when ever I try to forge a blade like yours it comes out looking like the center core of a 1998 Honda Civic that was in a head on collision with a Freightliner on the I-5 caused by the truck driver dozing off at the wheel. Now obviously it's nothing that I'm doing wrong that could've cause this, so it's safe to assume that it's your instructions on how to, is the problem. Would it be possible if you could do a better job at teaching us, instead of showing off, and be like, " Hey look at what I can do and you can't, even though you really want to do it, but you suck too bad so therefore you can't! " Thanks Adam I knew you would understand.

    • @AdamRhein
      @AdamRhein  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As of course my instructions have been meagre, vague and unclear, I strive to "show, not tell." I need and intend to make a couple of serious "how to" videos because as you have stated I don't explain nearly enough of what I am doing. The only problem is that all of my ability comes from corrected mistakes. I watched a bladesmith/blacksmith once forge a knife in front of me. That is the only in person instruction I have received. So, I don't really know how to explain what I'm doing/thinking. :)
