PianoLovee24 shyness doesn’t make you feel panicked and afraid, and it doesn’t last for long periods of time. I always act like my social anxiety is completely healed now, but the truth is I just don’t try if it gets too hard 😅 so I would have just stopped trying to talk to her instead of agonizing over how I was so afraid to.

the thing about it is that our society scorns 'shyness' and rewards extroversion. Social anxiety is scorned as "shyness" and this makes it even worse with a person with SA. Plus a lot of people don't see the anxiety that you have. They just see you "acting shy". A lot of parents see it that way too and they don't understand that the person exhibiting these symptoms are experiencing anxiety.

I wish my parents knew more about this when I was a kid. I was always told I was just shy, and my parents would often force me to do things I didn't want to do because I was "just shy" and just needed a push. I remember my first day at a new school, I was crying because I didn't know where to go and was too scared to ask. A teacher eventually saw me and helped me, but I could barely even talk because I was so scared. I have lots of memories like that. I couldn't ever order food for myself at a restruant or fast food place because I was too scared. Would never ask questions in class because I was nervous. I was embarassed to be different at all, even owning generic brand school supplies was so embarassing.
Now in my mid 20's im realizing I probably had anxiety and I wish my parents helped me differently rather than hoping exposure would fix everything. I still struggle today.

I really appreciate this video! I've always been shy (just haven't really cared or been interested in a lot of social situations -- I'm also an introvert, so I prefer to be alone anyway), but I feel like I've developed more social anxiety as I've been in college and have been expected to "perform" more. Essentially, I've been able to distinguish between my natural shyness and my social anxiety because I've realized that my social anxiety is a cycle (I feel anxious and think that I will be judged by others -> I don't participate socially -> I feel more anxiety about my lack of participation). What's really helped me has been actively thinking to myself "You are good enough" and "You deserve to participate" before social situations and, like you mentioned, making the social situation as positive as possible.

TWO THINGS: Customer Service and Ballroom Dancing. I used to have crippling social anxiety but the things that helped me break out of that were formalized/scripted social situations. Mainly, customer service jobs (barista and bank teller) and ballroom dance classes. Because there is a script or dance to follow, the element of uncertainty that triggers anxiety is minimized. The focus was not on me but on learning and following the patterns. Little by little as I became more comfortable and confident with these scripted interactions, I could go off script and be candid and natural. These things were total game changers for me.

I call myself shy because it’s easier to explain and hide behind. My social anxiety is a part of my moral OCD because I’m so afraid of doing wrong things or hurting people deeply, so I’m scared to interact with people at all. It runs my life and I don’t make friends easily. But my shyness and introversion are traits I embrace. It’s kind of hard to tell how far I can push my natural personality before it becomes social anxiety avoidance.

  • @deborahoputa1636
    @deborahoputa1636 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

When I was little I was the most vibrant of all my siblings but now I am very shy but not socially anxious because when I heard that if you're shy you'll just have trouble meeting new people, but when you get to know them you don't really worry about how you look or adding to the conversation bcos you're already used to them. Just like on the first day of school or on the first day of a new job your a little anxious but it wears out after some days and you get comfortable with everyone and everything but socially anxiety not the case.
Sometimes people also tend to think that being an introvert also means being shy but it isn't always the case, you just enjoy your alone time and do not like being in a crowd of people conversing, you just prefer one on one meaningful conversations and do more thinking than speaking .
Sometimes people can be shy and introverted.

Thank you so much for this explanation! I am a really shy person and I am also an introvert. For years I thought that for this reasons, I wasn't able to live my life like I wanted and that it was completely normal. I can't make friends or conversations easily, if I am anxious in a certain situation, I will probably avoid it in the future and I tend not to be comfortable around people I have known for years... I just feel like I am boring, I will have nothing to say and they probably prefer to spend their time with someone else. I still don't know if I suffer from social anxiety or I am just a really shy and awkward person lol but this video made me realized a lot of things which I didn't consider. Thanks!! :)

I think being shy in particular situations .. it’s kind of the same feeling , but if it’s shines it go away when that situation have passed , so if you had to speak in front of a camera you will be totally normal sharing your experience and shyness with the people you know after that experience .. social anxiety in other hand it’s being “shy/ anxious “ about people looking at you , thinking if you share that you will be judged as well .. thinking they judge you poorly about your looks and what you have said , and in my particular experience looking at people , that look towards me .. because i feel it will be the end of the world if i do so literally .. even if I know it’s not gonna happen anything most of the times .. also feeling like everyone is looking at you at social situations , so you become clumsy and awkward .. even if they don’t even notice you. It’s like you are a teenager and having a crush .. but imagine your crush it’s every person you meet in social situations .. even if you are not attracted to them.
In fact by watching your video I can totally see myself on it .. I was as well hiding my anxiety behind my smile , at the point where I seemed aways happy ( not forced to smile , it just happens ) when someone looked me .. or it happened one time even while I was breaking up with a guy because well I felt particularly anxious .. until someone make me notice it looks kind of weird .. even if I don’t really think so now .. and avoiding eye contact apparently took the lead as a coping mechanism.

I have always had the drive and desire to be a performer. I don’t have negative thoughts that people would not like me and that I know they would love me but every time I get up to sing in front of anyone even my parents, I start feeling debilitating fear, I see stars, and then faint. There’s no Mind Over Matter that can help. I really want to sing in front of people I’m not afraid to sing in front of people, but a physical reaction always comes over me no matter how much I tell myself this is a good thing and people will love my songs. I have passed out in front of everyone I know trying to sing my songs for them. At this point it’s more of a running joke to people that know me, but still something, but I wish I could do. I write music and record and come out my music online, but still cannot sing in front of anyone even know I have a lot of confidence, no fear of rejection, and I’m just really happy to sing in front of people. I will still have a panic attack and pass out. I just don’t understand why something that I want to do so badly and I’m not afraid of doing causes me that panic attack and faint every time… the absolute craziest part about this is, I can get up and speak in front of a room full of people. I have absolutely no problem, being the center of attention or being at the head of the room talking. But if we’re to go from talking to singing, Id pass out.🤷‍♀️

As a limited time offer with the wait it out method, you now get double the time, that's right folks twice the time plus two free decades if you call within the next 20 minutes. Your kid can have social anxiety until he's 40!
    What a great deal!
Call now, our operators are standing by.
Yes that is my story. It took me that long to try to fix it on my own, what is even worse, is that I thought I had to fix it on my own since that was what was offered to me. By the time I realized that what I had was a treatable thing in therapy, seemed a bit too late.

Great video. Does a treatment for social anxiety reduce the anxiety to "shyness"? I mean, can a solution to social anxiety be to become at ease with being that way?

Great question. I always want someone to work on their social anxiety so they can get to a point that they can be themselves. It tends to allow the person to just be shy if that's what they are naturally.

I never had social anxiety which I don’t think but I was not always comfortable talking to people but I was okay working in groups when we all have to talk out loud because I know it’s wasn’t just me along at front of the class but I really get nervous when I go up in front of the class. I don’t like talking to people but if I have to I will because I hade to because the teacher said so but I’m quite, Never loud. People don’t understand me as a shy person I feel. I’m always get ask that question. Why don’t you talk? It make feel bad about myself and makes me not want to talk at all and I had a teacher was telling my mom ‘ she’s going to talk no matter and that made me not was to. I was so upset. I didn’t have any friends. I got bullied in grade school because of my shyness.

What is perceived as shy could be somebody Displaying asocial behavior. Which can mean many things i suppose.
Being “shy “can can often be associated with being timid and having social anxiety”. Shy” people are shy for a reason. Maybe the person wants to be social but has low confidence and self esteem issues. People fear rejection from their peers.
It can also be unrelated to any of those things. The behavior of Choosing not to be social (asocial behavior) can be expressed for many different reasons, depending on the person. Not having a desire to partake in social behavior is scene as abnormal because humans are social beings that are easily motivated to respond to social influences.
Still people chose not to connect to the group for many different reasons. Some people don’t think very highly of the individuals in their mediate environment, they rather be an outcast in their community.
They may even have a sense of moral superiority, making them very critical of the way people behave. This makes it an easy choice to not partake in social Interactions. If you don’t trust your peers enough to want to form and maintain relationships, why bother.

I have a huge problem... and I’m not sure what to do...
I have a friend who keeps self-diagnosing herself with social anxiety... I’m pretty sure she doesn’t have it since she is really confident in what she does at school she even volunteers to do public speaking and such. So in short she’s a really social person. To make sure she doesn’t have social anxiety me and my best friend asked her what she was feeling and what she thought social anxiety was. Funny thing was she didn’t know so she stuttered the wrong definition. She’s always been type to tell everyone she’s been ‘cutting’ herself and that she has depression even though she hasn’t gotten any check ups from a doctor. I wanna tell her to stop acting like this because I worry people are gonna treat her as a liar. But at the same time I don’t wanna be rude... what should I do in this situation?

Sorry I don't agree, I think shyness is just the normalization of social anxiety. Maybe people who are shy have a mild form of social anxiety. I think we have social anxiety but we accept it, and in accepting anxiety it becomes shyness.
