ive thought this for years but never had the ability to put the thoughts together as tactfully as you did in this video, though im surprised you had no mention of witches, the original 'evil' variation of villagers that actually originate with notch and who come with their own set of unfortunate historical assocations also I think your reading of notch has just the right amount of nuance, which is refreshing to hear its weird i hear it so rarely, i guess that's what happens to discourse for a game with a younger skewing audience
I never really realised this. Probably because I played minecraft before I even knew about antisemetic stereotypes (I was like 5-9 years old). Now I'm much more hyper aware of it because of leftist creators pointing so many things I hadnt noticed.
great video! i've run into it while doing some research for my own little rant/video essay about the topic - altho i'm planning on focusing more on the dehumanisation aspect and how the minecraft youtube community has fallen for it hook line and sinker, in my opinion, evident by many very uncomfortable jokes, thumbnails, ect. and since youve said you want to do this full time, i figure that you probably won't mind some constructive criticism - it would really help if you made sure that mic isnt frying at any point. if you go back and see it happend, you could try doing a voiceover with some images on top to blend it in. a lot of ppl listen to videos like that, so the sound being consistent is quite important - it doesnt even have to be super high quality, but if it jumps around, it becomes jarring bc of people often listening more than watching, you might want to put more emphasis on moments when you show something on screen, or be more descriptive -- youve put A LOT of really good historical art and propaganda in your video, which obviously took you some time to gather and edit in, and it would be a shame for them to go overlooked, because i think they provide really important historical context that puts things in perspective well for people who might have *heard* some of those things but. well, seeing all that, it just hits different you know? i know i have been quite fortunate to have had a very extensive education on wwii and the like bc i'm polish, but i think many people (cough usamericans cough) havent had this privilege even despite that, there are many things i have completely failed to consider, like all of the piglin stuff youve brought up! it could be partly bc im quite new to minecraft, having missed out on it as a kid and started playing sometime last year -- i had no idea that villagers AI was originally same as pigs, but i will def read up on older builts of the game now all in all, thank you for the video and i hope you have a good day!
Thank you! The mic issues have been something I’ve tried to improve on in my videos since this one don’t worry, I actually bought a new one for the last one I put out for that exact reason! I’m aware this one doesn’t sound too great I actually tried to re-record it but my mic broke halfway through this video and I hadn’t noticed (you might’ve noticed the shift in quality) so take two came out even worse and I didn’t have any spare money for a new mic so I just posted it as is. One of the videos I linked in the description is from a channel with a fairly in depth minecraft iceberg series if you’re in the market for extensively detailed minecraft trivia, that’s where I learned the fact about villager ai being the same as pigs! I’d recommend checking those out as they’re quite informative and partially inspired this video :)
Idk about you guys, but „that creature reminds me of a Jewish person“ is a thought I would keep to myself, let alone use it as grounds to say someone else is antisemetic.
That's not what the argument is. The argument was that the preconceived biases of the creator of Minecraft lead to aspects of ethnic coding into the designs and game implementations of Minecraft. This type of coding is not being critiqued because it's simply "oh those look like Jews", it's being critiqued because one of the most popular games of all time that is played primarily by children and young adults and came to popularity in a modern age of rising collective antisemitism and was created by an antisemitic game maker who was denounced by the current game makers.
@@samyes1726 I’m arguing against the logic behind it, I don’t think that similarities in creature design are enough to say someone is an antisemite. The only definitive way to know is if notch were to say himself what inspired the design, otherwise the argument is just confirmation bias. no one else will know the exact reasoning behind the way the models look no matter how good of a guess they make, and jumping to the conclusion of “they must hate x group” is not fair.
What do you mean by that? I dont understand. Is there something mean about their face? What is that supposed to mean. Did you intend it to be an insult? If so, maybe you should grow up. A persons appearance doesnt say anything important about the person, and therefore theres nothing wrong with howether a person looks or choses to look. The fact that you focus so much on their face makes you seem rather shallow. Maybe instead of insulting someones appearence, you could have not commented at all. And I hope that you werent talking about their nose.
@@TheProletariat321I appreciate you standing up for me but they were referencing the outro where I jokingly said to comment something mean about my face 😭
Imo I believe notch had antisemitic ideas for the villiger atleast in design however never went beyond that and now villagers aren't just anti Semitic archetype npc but well villagers. I do not think Minecraft is antisemitic and it's best to forget thag element of the past of the games creator and enjoy what the game has become. Also I think Villagers are more like Christian On account of their structures. Like the church structure Not being a synagogue or anything like that. ( sry if spelled wrong ) also witch's and totems of undying are more Christian like I believe.
@@ConfusedMoon-yd2bx you’re right there definitely is elements of Christian culture mixed in, witches are more of a Jewish thing historically though because Jews have been associated a lot with “dark magic” in order to villainise our practices. However witches aren’t an exclusively antisemitic idea or character archetype, I’d argue if it’s offensive to anyone it’d be actual pagans not Jews, and I don’t think the witch npcs were specifically designed with Jews in mind. I also agree that it shouldn’t get in the way of enjoying the game, it’s a very small part that can be criticised but there’s a lot more to be enjoyed aside from the few dubious elements. Also you spelled synagogue right, although unlike churches synagogues don’t really have any specific style of architecture since synagogue just means like, a gathering or a bunch of people together. They can really look like anything I know some that are just houses.

Awesome comment
What did notch mean when he added tall black men that get agitated when you stare at them, can't swim, and steal blocks?
And added in the game same update where he added watermelon and chain bars
idk who this Notch is, I thought Hatsune Miku made Minecraft after writing the Harry Potter books? 🤷♀️
Miku would never write those shitty books

No one’s saying the designs remind us of Jewish people. They remind us of antisemitic Nazi propaganda.
