I think what you're alluding to is affordability rather than size. The reason why many automakers are forced to quit sub-US$20,000 vehicles is rather simple. US$20,000 in 2024 is equivalent to US$16,000 in 2019. Cost of components, materials, utilities, shipping, and labor have increased significantly in the past 5 years. And modern cars have increasingly more sensors, cameras, semiconductors, and software...which make them more expensive to manufacture. I'm not so sure automakers can make any profits selling cars under US$20,000. In addition, automakers in the US are penalized for selling gas vehicles in the form of carbon credits, and are faced with challenging EPA emission standards, which also increases the cost of vehicles. Some automakers like Toyota and Honda use hybrids to increase fuel efficiency, but the electric motors and batteries increase the cost of production by about US$2,000-3,000 per vehicle. It's easy to blame automakers for misreading the market, but they also operate in a very restrictive yet competitive market.
You can't justify a higher selling price for a small car. I bet the cost difference between (minus the added on features) a small car vs. a mid to large SUV isn't that much to manufacture.
People are not looking for smaller cars. They are, however, looking for affordable vehicles that can be purchased outright or manageable monthly payments. If given the choice, the vast majority of consumers would opt for an SUV or pickup. If a Toyota Tundra cost the same $22,000 as a Corolla, I would be willing to bet the Tundra would outsell the corolla 5:1, or greater.
I bought a '24 Nissan Sentra. I went in to look at the Versa but got a deal on the Sentra. In my area Nissan was the only dealer to actually deal on price. Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi just wouldn't budge.
The Focus was pretty good, but only the version that came with the 2.0NA with a conventional auto and not the power shift automated manual. That transmission is garbage.
I owned Ford Maverick cars Escorts Focuses and Fiestas still have a 14 year but now I'll look for China To import an Affordable small car hopefully soon.
I have a '21 Elantra (called Preferred here .. like your SEL but I lose automatic climate, but gain heated leather steering wheel). The EV3 looks interesting on sizing. Here is the deal on what should have been done decades ago when SUV were being "marketed as savvy and cool" to drive and not carry cargo. The governments should have paid people to stick to reasonably powered sedans, wagons and variants (which would have been cued to be many designed for more cargo back ends). Sedans have a low birth (creation) and return to mother nature as they are so much less than a SUV .. also they weigh less and do not wear the infrastructure, and finally if all vehicles were lower and weighed less equally - safety systems would cost less and work better (lower insurance). Can you imagine if in say 2020 - most people were still in sedans and wagons, probably with hybrid offerings in the works - and THEN EV push went to that "in play" balancing of technology and cost between which is relied upon more - the battery or petro engine.
Nissan, IMO, has the best products. Yes, the CVT has issues, but if you service them at 30k intervals, they are rock solid. However, they are the last to offer non-turbo in the majority of their vehicles. Go to the car complaints website, and their vehicles are tried and true and have very few issues. With all the problems with KIa and Hyundai, I would never buy a car from them or GM. There are just too many issues out there.
You can’t move overpriced EV’s if there’s a cheaper compact ICE vehicle on the lot. There are tons of fully loaded pickups on the lots though. Look back at the dodge Omni’s, that’s the size we need.
nobody wants these small compact cars,if u have to sell them they sit and the buyers on that market are soooo cheap. its not worth selling. there good to drive but again selling is a different story. prius buyers the absolute worst. online everybody swears they will buy 1 but in real life will not purchase it. the only car on this list worth selling is an elantra. everything else doesnt sell.
1) Americans won't buy small vehicles 2) small vehicles with a 3 or 4 cylinder engine are still going to cost $40,000-50,000 3) you look really good in that T shirt 😄
All north American need get back to building cars again!!! Crossovers are just ugly. Cars are still needed and better designs. Today it's only trucks ,crossovers, suv's all boring need cars with colors everything boring colors all ugly.

Good information we just bought a Mazda CX-50 . Under $30000. Very nice SUV. Up scale look.
I almost went with the cx-50 but settled for the Mazda 3 hatchback instead.

You forgotten your favorite Hyundai Accent! Actually I have a 2019 manual and it is perfect.
Problem is:
Ford has Never made a good small car. Terrible engines and transmissions.
gen 3 ford escorts were very reliable
They have mad some decent ones over the years, no many though. Turbo 4 cylinder, now pure trash for Ford.
@@mph5896 - Ford made 4 cylinder turbos in the late 1980s. They were trash then. Even Ford wouldn't give a trade in value on them.

Aubrey, great video. I thought about the Chevy Trax, but it's too small. I went ahead and got the Blazer for wide wheel base and a smoother ride.
Trax vs Blazer = Apples v Oranges.
She considers them similar. Thankfully you did not. I hope the Blazer serves you well.
FACTS SMALLER EV IS BETTER THATS WHY THE ELECTRIC SCOOTER MARKET IS BOOMING

Shame about the fiesta, I wish they kept the manual variant, at least those were somewhat reliable.
I would love to see the Fit and Yaris brought back to America. I would buy one of the two for around town errands.

Open market to Chinese makers, tons of cheap EV and ICE vehicles, just what US citizens need.
Many of them under $10k, brand new.
Yup, I agree. I do wonder, however, just how much of their cars are stolen designs, R&D and tech.
@@laid07 does it matter, when people are poorer and car prices are out of reach?
@@wchen315 It kinda does matter.

Maverick XL's are not easy to find. The '24/'25 Trax so the same with the Envista do poorly in crash tests.
Did you really reference JD Powers for reliability? You're not helping yourself.
Giant brodozers don't make any sense, owners are just throwing money away.
If only my local Reno Ford dealer didn't suck so much...
It makes PERFECT sense to our WEF overlords. Each step takes working people further and further away from ANY type of freedom !!!!!!!!!
Small cars should also come in at under 20k easily or less.
cars are not the only thing getting more chonky in recent years...
There is no EV worth buying.
Need the 4th gen honda fit in NA!!!

are those toyota numbers given around 4:25 min including the tundra engine numbers?
