Johnny vs. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

- With Crash Bandicoot's success, Naughty Dog decided to really crank up the effort and detail with the 1997 sequel, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. Surprisingly, it's the least financially successful in the original trilogy, but is the game itself something numbers can't speak for?

And here I thought you were gonna say the ARK Cannon.
...That works too.
You were thinking that too?
+gameman250 That's what came to mind immediately for me as well!
So did I!
it didn't run on gems though
HEY I WAS MENTIONED. Haha, no worries John! You've got some awesome shit going on this channel :-D I'm glad that my shady memory was actually correct for Crash 1. A pretty unforgiving mechanic, I must say.
Granted judging from the amount of fans you have here, it looks like you are pretty popular here, so it is kind of hard not to get mentioned by him.
I must say Caddy, i would be surprised if your a guest star for Johnny's review on Crash 3 cause of how you stated that it was the game that got you into video games in general. i would really like to see that.
***** I honestly wouldn't mind seeing Caddi and John doing a collab.
***** This.
***** Caddy already reviewed Crash 3.
If there is a collab review, it'll be CTR.
This video was a real gem!
I see what you did there!
and i wish i didnt. XD jk
If only you commented in "Crash bandicoot N.sane Trilogy."
That's low-hanging Wumpa fruit.
gem powered laser...AND NO MENTION OF SONIC ANYWHERE
lol
haha......eclipse canon
TheSkarmorymaster Yeah, that's what I though. It probably realizes and did that on purpose.
Crash did it first?
That was the first thing that came to my mind too, haha
*****
Sonic 3&K = 1995, Master Emerald laser.
I was hoping you'd mention Caddy's comment on the last review! XD
Charriii5 He commented this during his creepy pasta phase in 2014 lol
O_O my god..Johnnny...you finally revealed the secret of where that last box on Cold Hard Crash was. That box has eluded me since I was 13 years old...I am 27...thank you...thank you so very very much
Actually Johnny, the blue gem those give a hint on how to get it (assuming you got the clear gem already). At the end of the level you will get a counter that reads X/0 with X being how many boxes you broke. After seeing that I knew what I had to do.
That’s interesting. And now it tells you in N-Sane.
it surprised me to learn that even caddicarus didn't know this, he discovered the blue gem by complete accident
This game is definitely an improvement over the first game.
I'm looking forward to your Crash 3 review!
The 3rd one was (in my opinion) the best!
Famtomerc Agreed!
This was my first PS game ever and definitely my favorite of the series. Better than N-Sane Trilogy's imo, which I also love and its improvements.
Crash Bandicoot is one of those under-appreciated franchises. I loved playing them back in the day.
This was the FIRST Game I played on the Playstation 1 .. along with NFL Gameday '99, lol
First I played on it was Ridge Racer and Ace Combat haha
Gran Turismo 2 for me
Lol, I thought you were going draw a comparison to the eclipse cannon being powered by chaos emeralds. Awesome review as always, Johnny.
I thought it was going to be the death laser from Sonic 3 (I count Sonic 3 & Knuckles as Sonic 3 since that's the whole game).
That could work too.
shock44 You know what I mean by death laser, right? The giant thing powered by the Master Emerald?
Yep. I know exactly what you're talking about.
Sonic fanboys making stupid comparisons again!
I hope Johnny says "Elliot SERIOUSLY!?" in the next review lol
"68/69 Crates" *69 CRATES*
C R A S H I S B A C K B O Y S
Except, he's not.
+SaberRexZealot Isn't having a remaster of the first 3 games and getting a place in Skylanders something?
JoeyGaming Remasters in the place of a new game? Nope; being a cynic's the way to go, friend.
Still gonna buy it though, cos I'mma bloodsucking fan.
+SaberRexZealot If Crash is getting a chance at a comeback, I'll take it. Unfortunately he's the only reason why I'm getting Imaginators.
0:12 I'm really happy my family isn't just weird for doing this.
It probably happened in many families independently. I got it as well
10:57 - 11:00
"Oh ho ho, I've been waiting a long time for this! FIRE!"
And then Dark Gaia.
Even if the jetpack levels have weird controls, it had the most god-tier music in the franchise
double post...
EarthCrash huh, don't know why it did that...
Agree
8:54 Absolutely everything. I played through that stage so many times that I memorized the death route trying to find that hidden crate. The secrets suck too, the manual even advertised the Strategy Guide.
Possibly my favourite in the series, its hard to say, but I have the most memories with this one. Great video Johnny!
When he said "gem-powered laser", I thought he was going to mention the ARK's cannon in SA2 xD
The game wasn’t even out yet when this game was made. Not even Adventure one
LEAVE!!
@@timhook2086 But the review was.
@@atre5763 No u
Great review John, also you forgot to mention about the boss fights and talk about Coco's character and that she was the replacement of Tonya.
Because Japan complained Tawna was too "sexy" for younger audiences.
You're pretty good at writing reviews, man. Keep it up.
Cold Hard Crash is lowkey the best level. I love it when you need a certain strategy to get every gem.
I think temple run owes crash royalties
This was my favorite one of the trilogy.
Mine too. ^__^
Least favourite.
@@ultrairrelevantnobody1862 why’s that?
@@Jackattack359
As of recently, I've discovered that I don't care for it anymore. A few reasons. Clunky level design, dodgy jumping, stiff movement, repetitive and uninspired level themes, trial and error deaths that feel cheap, and pathetic boss battles. Really I'm not fond of 1 and 2 in general anymore. Very clunky games nowadays.
This was the first Crash Bandicoot game I played and it took me forever to 100% the game. I truly enjoyed this game and I always have a hard time trying to decide whether I think this one is better or Crash Bandicoot 3. I can't wait for the Crash 3 review!
It's kind of awesome the way that Naughty Dog works its newer franchises with the older one's mechanics.
Jak basically has Crash's moveset, Uncharted took the minor shooting elements from later Jak games and evolved them into a proper third person shooter, then The Last of Us took that third person shooter and added survival elements to it.
ALL of which have neat sidekicks with them (that usually become playable in some aspect later in the franchise's official ND lifespan), whether they be Coco, Daxter, Sully or Ellie.
This was an amazing review on Crash 2, everything that was needed to be said was said and it was cool how you mentioned Caddy too. Can't wait for Crash 3.
I was certain you were going to reference sonic adventure 2's ARK canon that had another gem powered laser. So many gem powered lasers of our youth.
The Gem Powered Laser I was thinking of was the Eclipse Cannon
Same here
One of the great games of my childhood.
The best Crash Bandicoot Game in the franchise in my opinion.
Hi Jerimiahisiah. I love your videos.
Thanks. :D
You're welcom. Come on crash come back already.
So right about that dude!
My favorite, with the space jetpack levels, the surf board, polar bear levels. I fuckin love this one!
Along with its remake.
The glory years of Crash Bandicoot.
One more game to go (Crash 3), and it's all downhill from here.
*****
Yeah, everyone seems to be a fan of Crash Twinsanity, but unfortunately it's like saying this disease is better than the other ones.
***** That doesn't make it good.
Really? Not even CTR or Crash Bash was good? Not even Wrath of Cortex?(flame war will begin after mentioning after WoC.)
***** Well, the game is so bad it's hilarious.
CTR,the gba games and twinsantiy were good you swine
So far I'm liking Johnny's reviews of the Crash games. One thing that he is doing is pointing out the impossible and dreadful parts of the original games which other Crash fans are afraid to admit.
Seriously Johnny. I would love if you did every game. Like I know the post ND games aren't loved but personally Twinsanity, N-Tranced and Titans are underrated. Wrath of Cortex is bleh... Mind over Mutant is an awful rehash of Titans and Nitro Kart along with Tag Team Racing are not as good as CTR.
***** He said it is UNDERrated, as in its better than what people think.
I actually think MoM is better than Titans in my opinion...
Yeah it did a lot of improvements. But I like Titans better, mostly because it had a longer development time.
***** well if that's your biggest judgement then my god you must love anything made by Valve.
***** And not as much backtracking.
One of my favorite games, to this very day. :) The soundtrack, the design, the flow - everything. Also, I can agree, as I tried to speed-run this game, 100%, many times, Cold Hard Crash... dat... dat... level... Also, there is a minor speed-trick you can use, using the slide: if you let go of the circle button JUST as you slide, and move forward, then spin - it's literally a frame-perfect trick - you actually can gain speed, and move nearly 2x faster than normal - also letting you attack and move at the same time, making the chase levels with the bears and rocks VERY easy, and gain ground faster. It only really helps in those situations, and it's a very tricky thing to pull off in rapid succession, but, it looks cool. :)
(Tiny anecdote incoming) My first experience with this was an odd one. While on a vacation my parents were invited to listen to a timeshare thing and if they listened to it (for four hours) and still didn't want to buy anything, they got tickets to Disney World. During the presentation, all of the kids were sent to a back room where we just basically played video games the entire time and the hottest game at the time was this. When I played it (not having owned a 3D game console yet): mind = blown.
The greatness of the game combined with Disney World being in mind certainly makes this the most memorable game ever for me.
The sequel kicked more butt than the first but I wait for the third game.
Who knew #SomecallmeJohnny is even capable of even getting other reviewers to be awake longer they intended? Now that's just plain badass.
I miss playing this so much, me and my dad put nights into this, this game has a really big special place in my heart
Man, I'm glad I've never attempted to play these games for 100% completion. I'd probably end up chucking the discs through my television if I did.
They're not THAT bad that Johnny was saying they were. A little tedious but not Sonic 06 glitch fest tedious.
Can't wait for the Crash Bandicoot 3 review, my favourite Crash Bandicoot game.
Same
My personal favorite of the three, but I've said my piece on this game on the Crash 2 LP.
I'm glad your introduce me to this series. And I'm having a blast with 1 and 2 also I gotten symphony of the night for my birthday yesterday and yet so fun too
Fun fact: If you get the Box Gem in the first level before going for going for the Blue Gem AND breaking at least one box, the stage will tell you your have "x/0" boxes. That's your clue to not breaking any.
DAMN IT JOHN! I HAVE HOMEWORK!
ikr
same here
Homework can be done later
Crash 2 is such an awesome game but I still think Crash 3 is slightly better.
Can't wait for that Crash 3 review video.
I don't know why but I always find myself going back to Crash 2 instead of Crash 1 even though I own every one for the vita through CFW.. ~_X; Fuk non-releases in certain territories/systems! :D Moreover, I bought them back when I was young, and bought them on PSN, yarharfiddledeedeed the PS Vita versions... Never the less, 2 has a certain charm... EVEN to this day I still play it over 3! Even though I know 3 is the superior build, and play it afterwards when I want to marathon them portably!
i like crash 1 a little more than 2
I like going back to Johnny's old reviews
When he said "gem-powered laser," I thought he was going to mention the Eclipse Cannon in Sonic Adventure 2, for sure.
The third game is by far my favorite
My parents never listened to what I wanted for Christmas as a child but as luck would have it, even though I never got the games I wanted, I always got good games thanks to my dad having a gamer friend.
Really nice episode man :D
I gotta admit dude it was pretty awesome that u mentioned another youtuber :)
Dr. Cortex is literally fucking Mr. Krabs.
Tristan Hooglinschmirtz shut the fuck up dumbass 8 year wtf you talkin about
Tristan Hooglinschmirtz I thought you were some dumbass making a joke 🖕😛🖕
+Trashboat500 Lol, ok.
Tristan Hooglinschmirtz Uka Uka moreso
Crash 2 was the very first Crash game I'd ever played. And eventually I'll get around to actually owning/finishing it. lol
6:17 thus, a beautiful friendship was born
Good you uploaded this, i need this because DKC Tropical Freeze is got me frustrated
When you said gem powered lazer I thought you were going to talk about the space colony arc from Sonic Adventure 2. It was powered by chaos emeralds.
Granted about 900+ people have already said that before in the comments, but hey...
Oh. I just commented and didn't read the other ones.
75% of the comments are nothing but that. It's very normal for Johnny's fanbase to do stuff like that anyway...
Yeah...
Batman and Robin was just on TV yesterday. It's fun to make fun of. Though it was pretty CHILLY.
Clancy Brown is also Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob
No wonder his voice is amazing.
He also did some voices in Spyro the Dragon.
and what's really ironic about that is Tom Kenney, the voice of Spongebob, voiced Spyro in Ripto's Rage, Year of the Dragon, and Enter the Dragonfly.
Giordan Diodato Carsh and Spyro come together for the 1 millionth time in Crash Purple and Spyro Orange is what the advert for those games should have read then.
XCRASHGAMERx Actually, that's the only time they come together.
Crash Bandicoot 2. My first Crash game, and my first PS1 game!
Great review John!
OMG I just played this game and that one well hidden box in Cold Hard Crash did drive me absolutely crazy. I would have never figured it out without looking it up on the net. What a cruel thing to do to players who struggled to get through the death route with all the nitros on ice and back track through it.
Shit... I remember my mom coming home one day and bringing me Crash Bandicoot Warped, that was seriously tits!
I love Crash 2 the most!
Awesome review, Johnny! I am anxiously awaiting the next review of the series! :D
This was my first PS1 game. I hear the opening music and it's 1999 all over again. Damn. Memories. Thank you, First Communion money.
Gem powered laser? Eclipse Cannon, anyone?
Why Johnny WHY... why did you have to remind me of that movie!? Btw when are you gonna watch it for BrainScratch?
You got multiple presents at Christmas? God I wish it worked like that in my family. Great review lol
Out of all the Crash games number 3 is my favorite of them all..Can't wait to see that review :3
Crash Bandicoot 2 was always my favorite out of the series. It was also my first Crash Bandicoot, so that may have had something to do with shaping my opinion.
Same here.
Am I the only one that loved Wrath of Cortex? :(
I know the loading times are pretty awful but that dont stop the game from bein fun :D
It's a very good HD expansion pack for Crash 3...
Well, it´s good ol Crash Action, nothin wrong with that :D
Innovation didnt work out too well with the Titan games I dont think...
When I first played this back in 2015 I was surprised to learn that Clancy Brown voiced Cortex. I was already a big fan of his work as Lex Luthor, Mr. Krabs and even Baron Praxis from the Jak and Daxter series and I’m glad they got him to voice Cortex I think he is an absolutely wonderful voice actor, one of my favorites out there.
I absolutely love John's review videos. I even snuck off at work to watch this one. Now...let me get back..
And coincidentally the Mr Freeze DLC will come out for Arkham Origins soon.... This year.....
*STAY COOL BIRD BOI*
By the way, why does everyone immediately think SA2 when they think of a gem-powered laser? The first Sonic Adventure wasn't even out yet, if anything S3&K is a better comparison (if not Mr. Freeze).
I grew up with Crash Team Racing, The wrath of Cortex and Crash Nitro Kart as a child. I even have a Crash plushy doll
10:58 You mentioned a Gem Powered Laser and DIDN'T think of the Eclipse Canon from Sonic Adventure 2? Johnny I'm the Ultimate Lifeform of Disappoint.
lol...i thought he was going to talk about the colony ark from SA2 when he mentioned the gem powered laser...
Wait, how is the best-selling Crash game the least financially successful? That seems like a bit of a paradox to me.
Maybe they put a lot of money into advertising and because of that it just wasn't as financially successful, I'm just talking out of my ass though I don't even know if there were advertisements for this game.
The best selling Crash game on the PS1 is Crash Bandicoot 3. Followed by the original, and then the second game.
+SomecallmeJohnny How come the second one sold the least?
+Jacob Carpenter probably because Cold Hard Crash
L-Y3T So it sold the least because kids couldn't handle a challenge?
I Love this game
Thank you! !!
Love this channel
Hey Johnny, just wanted to say thanks for mentioning that missing box in Cold Hard Crash, that was the one box that would always stop me from getting 100% and now thanks to you I got it and finished Crash 2 100% for my channel. You're the best!
I have a story about this particular game. You see I wasn't always a fan of multiple game systems in fact I thought that it was a compatition for us consumers like how do you think the game companies get their money from their fans. So being my very first game system was the Super Nintendo Entertainment System I was a huge Nintendo Fan Boy and I thought that once you chose a game system company you have to stay with them and don't buy other companies systems because you would betray Nintendo by buying their rivals systems. So I didn't want a Playstation but didn't mean that I knew someone who had one which I did. My old best friend Daniel had a Playstation and one of the times I visited him he asked me if I had heard of the Playstation? I looked at him like he was nuts and said that no of course not Daniel you know that I am a fan of Nintendo Systems you of all people should know that. So he told me that Brian it's not a compatition for us the game companies expect us to buy other companies systems because there might be games that you might like and they might not have. So he showed me the Playstation and I looked at the system and asked uh where's the cartridge port to put the game in? He told me Brian those are old school even Nintendo will change and stop making games that come in Cartridges the Playstation Games come on CDS. I was surprised to hear that I said huh CD Games really? He said yes because they can hold more information on them then cartridges can. So he put the game into the Playstation and he told me that he picked this game just for me to get me used to games on the Playstation. And the game was Crash Bandicoot 2. I watched Daniel play it showing me how to play it and everything and I thought it reminded me of a Nintendo 64 game that I was playing at the time. It was Donald Duck Goin Quackers from Ubisoft Montreal. I played Crash Bandicoot 2 and even Daniel said that I was a natural at this why don't you ask your mom Judy for a Playstation for Christmas? Because I'm sure you will enjoy the system. I told him that I'm a Nintendo Fan Boy Daniel I don't want to betray them so until I see on Nintendo Power that they expect us to buy other companies systems I won't be asking my mom for a Playstation for Christmas. So for a while I didn't have anybody else systems not even Sega Systems until I gave in and bought a Sega Dreamcast and I wanted to get one of the popular games like Sonic Adventure being I heard that Sonic was Sega's rival to Nintendo's Mario so I wanted to see how Sonic was. But as everyone knows that the first party games always stay expensive even after trading in they're still expensive. So I didn't play any Sonic games. I only played the cheap Sports Games unfortunately. But I really didn't like the controller that the Sega Dreamcast had it was too big for me to hold on to so I traded it back in and forgot about it until the Circuit Breaker Program came around and I was looking at the Playstation 2 because I was kinda interested in the system. So I did gave in and bought a Playstation 2 and I hold the controller and I really loved the feel of the controller it reminded me of how the Super Nintendo Controller felt. So I really enjoyed having it and I at first felt ashamed of betraying Nintendo but I read in Nintendo Power that someone else felt like me too and asked them if they betrayed Nintendo because they got another company's system. And the person said no you didn't betray us we expect you to buy other companies systems because they might have games that we don't have and you might enjoy the games on the system so enjoy your Playstation 2 because it's not a compatition for anyone. So that made me feel better about myself and since then I have been a fan of both Nintendo and Sony Computer Entertainment Systems. I did have a Xbox 360 but I didn't like it as much. I now have a Nintendo 3DS and I have a Playstation Vita Slim and I have a Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. I love all of my systems.
briansivley2001 Haha, cool story. I was similar, except I was a Sega kid. Never played any Nintendo systems, but got a PS1 one day as a present. At that point Sega kinda stopped making systems so I transitioned to Sony. PS2 came out and was amazing, still ignored Gamecube. Xbox came out and caught my attention. So I saved up and got it, and didn't regret it as it was nice to have a different selection of games and it was cool to have the extra media capabilities, also got linux running on my original Xbox which could do amazing things like emulate old systems. This was my first exposure to old Nintendo games...
At this point I realised 'console wars' are stupid, and kinda wanted a Gamecube because it had those remixes of Sonic Adventure games and various Nintendo franchises I wanted to check out but I never got around to it. Next generation I just got everything, as soon as they came out. Which I don't necessarily regret, but I learnt there's definitely no rush to get systems at launch because... Well, you have to wait a couple of years to truly get a decent game library. So I had 360, Wii and PS3 day one when each one was available. It was cool to play Gamecube games finally, i got DS and PSP too.
And now... I'm waiting. I have no new systems, even though 3DS, Vita and Wii U probably have enough games to justify a purchase, but not so sure about PS4 XONE just yet. But yeah, I'll probably get whichever system has the game I want most at the time. I can understand where the 'competition' comes from, but it's a shame people still take it so seriously. All systems have pros and cons, but all can have fun games which is still all relative to the individuals preferences.
RodniDemental wow great story. I knew someone who had a Sega Genesis but I wasn't interested in it being I was a Nintendo Fan Boy lol. But now I do have one but because of Lunar The Silver Star which was for it's add on Sega CD. Nowadays I'm looking for a Japanese Sega Genesis game called Pulseman. It's from Game Freak one of my favorite Video Game Developers. But nowadays they're asking for so much for it that I might have to cave in and buy a Reproduction of the game which I really don't like to do being I prefer the original cart but I might have to admit defeat and do it.
John, in the future you should do a month of Sly Cooper! That'd be great! ^_^
How many times have I heard the last name "Cooper"? I have a friend who's last name is Cooper! WHY ARE THERE SO MANY COOPERS!?!?
That guy with the fork en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D._B._Cooper
It's a common last name, it's like asking why are there so many Smiths or Ortizs...
That guy with the fork Because it's pretty common :D
Finally, someone else who wants Sly to be Johnny Vs.! I love Sly and I really want him to review them. Also, I want him to finish the Legend Of Zelda, do Spyro, and Uncharted.
***** Agreed.
Your Christmas family traditions sound like mine. Open one present on Christmas Eve, then open the rest on Christmas morning. Sounds like my Christmas.
Awesome rewiew :) i played that game as a lot i was a kid.
Hm. Caddicarus watches your videos. Well, that's nice.
After Crash, what do you plan on doing next? Spyro? Or maybe continue the Naughty Dog route and do the Jak and Daxter games?
Yeah! Do Jak and Daxter!
This /and/ Mighty Switch Force? Huzzah!!
Edit: A shout out to Caddy? This just keeps getting better and better!!
Yay! New review!
I recently beat Crash 2 100%! :D
You got to open 1 present early? My parents would never let us do that...eh aw well waiting never hurts unless it takes a long long time.
Try waiting 3 months for MCM comic con :(
waiting for christmas always feels like a long time as a child, regardless if you open them christmas eve or christmas morning ^^
Try waiting 3 years for FFX HD >__> Yes it really was announced 2011...
MisterX867 At least it wasn't canceled.
It's a Latin American tradition, John's family's is from Puerto Rico...
Good old N. Gin... to this day my favorite Crash Bandicoot character other than...well... Crash. Well...he was my favorite Crash character until the new games where they just made him a little too........not sure what the word is... anyway, I love the truck out of this game as well as the rest of the Crash trilogy! Thanks for reviewing these Johnny! The nostalgic memories I'm having right now almost bring a tear to my eye...
Great video Johnny! Can't wait for the next one!
Hey Johnny, are you going to review the Xbox(and Whatever else it was on) Crash game? I believe it was called Wrath of Cortex.
He said he will review it eventually, but not as a part of the marathon...
Good to know, thanks. I only mentioned it because it was my first Crash game.
This is so weird. Does everyone in the gaming community know everybody?
I fuking wish... ~.X Would so want to hang out with these magnificent, and sometimes xDDDDDDD as fuq, gloriously HILARIOUS people I watch! :DDDDDDDD ^_^
It’s a small world after all
Also, 'Cold Hard Crash'. Never forget. *Shudders*
I remember this game. The nitro boxes and the little polar bears. Also crazy timing that I'm watch the crash 2 lp on his LP channel.
Gem powered laser, Sonic adventure 2, nothing John really?
Probably too obvious to reference, since 90% of the comments here are exactly like yours...
You talk a lot about Star Fox. Next marathon maybe?
***** Lol
***** Cube it Austin.
10:56
And let's not forget Multiple Entries of gem powered Lasers from the Sonic the Hedgehog Series.
The Eclipse Cannon, Giagatic Egg Robo's Master Emerald Laser, Team Dark's Team Blast...
You never mentioned that if you slide, and then hit the square button, you spin which makes the slide go on longer
