  • @Vixin24
    @Vixin24 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    That door was super light and not designed to hold people. The only reason Rose was able to stay on it is because she was a small woman who didn't weigh much. Even Jack alone would have likely caused it to sink too much so both of them together would have definitely capsized it. With water that freezing, the number 1 most important thing is to get out of it.
    Rose survived because the door kept her out of the water completely and the life jacket kept her core temperature from dropping to a critical level. She would have still been freezing and wouldn't have lasted much longer than she did had the boats delayed much further anyway. But if they had both got on it and it had somehow managed to remain afloat, it would have still been partially submerged (as you can see in this video with the water reaching their hands) and that small bit of water would have killed them quicker.
    It's maybe possible one of them could have stayed alive with their hands submerged by balancing with their body completely off the door (like doing a push-up). That's how the Chinese passenger Fang Lang survived in real life (there's also a deleted scene showing his rescue) by balancing that way on a table but it was incredibly difficult and two of them couldn't have done it on that door.
    So really there was no way for Jack to survive unless he found another piece of debris to survive on.

    • @Vixin24
      @Vixin24 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikechar17 You are underestimating how cold the water was and how long it took for the boats to return. It's stated in the movie that only six people out 1400 were pulled alive from the water. We could assume many others managed to find some of the various debris to get partially out of the water on but didn't survive. We know this from the real Titanic too. Most died within minutes and the lifeboats took far too long to return (due to their mistaken fear that they would swamp the boats). In that situation the key to survival is to keep your core temperature as warm as possible. If even some of their body was in the water it would have lowered their chances of survival. Being without a life jacket like Jack would lower it even more.
      They demonstrate in the movie that the door cannot hold both of them and this video demonstrates it too. It's a matter of buoyancy. Doors on the titanic were made of one of 3 types of wood, teak, oak or pine. Teak would not have floated at all and pine would have supported their weight. Which means we can assume that the door was made of oak, enough buoyancy to support Rose's weight but with Jack's added on top, it would sink.

If i threw you outside in the middle of winter, and you didnt get frost bite and were moving, your chances of survival goes up immensely. I've never understood this whole situation or why people are so frustrated by it. It's always "if they could've done this" or "if they would've done that." They never focus on what actually happened.
    Jack helps Rose to the door.
    He helps her get onto the door.
    He tries to get on the door but it capsizes.
    Jack pushes Rose back onto the door, nods his head in assurance with his decision and stays in the water.
    Rose did as Jack instructed. Jack, himself, was pleased with what he'd done and was hopeful that the boats would return. He didn't complain. He didn't whine. He even assured her that she would go on to live a full life whether he did or not. He sacrificed his own life so that she would live and made her promise not to give up so his sacrifice wouldn't be in vain. It was a selfless final act of love on Jack's part. Complaining about the mathematics and possible alternatives steals from the poetic and heroic nature of the scene. It also steals from the altruistic core of Jack's nature which was what made him a polar opposite to Cal's self centered snobbery and callousness.

    I am a firm believer that they both couldn't fit on the door. But! I am also a firm believer it was indeed rose's fault. Jack started to swim away to search for another thing to float on and guess what rose said. She said "don't leave me jack" and this hopeless romantic decided "okay". Just let the man go and find something to damn float on goddammit.

  • @JW-cvnt

    the real thing to get upset about is rose would’ve made it if she stayed on the boat and i’m sure jack would’ve found a way to land and they would’ve been able to see each other like 😭😭😭

    Anyone who knows fuck all about physics at even a basic level knows that that door could only save one. I knew it as a child, before I'd ever learned the formulas... it just doesn't make any sense that two people could use a door as a floatation device...honestly 1 person on a door in the Atlantic would be a fucking miracle! The waves alone!

    My friends and I had a joke about this for years - we'd say "find another door" when things got tough - for us, it wasn't about them both fitting on the door.. the Titanic was a 28,000 sq ft ship that snapped in half like a damn toothpick breaking thousands of floatable-sized pieces off into the water around them. I know Rose didn't want him to leave her, it was dark & cold, but he could've just found something else to float on real quick! Ugh! Lmao we just wished Jack had survived 😭 true love is all this controversy was ever about! Lol 😅

    • @mikechar17

    • @cv3083
      @cv3083 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a moonless night. Nearly pitch black. He could not have easily left to find a piece of wood unoccupied and then bring it back to be next to her. Also, as we saw with the man who was using Rose's head to stay afloat, who knows what would've happened to Rose if Jack left her side. Someone else could've swamped the panel she was on in an effort to save themselves.

    Women have an extra layer of fat (don't use that as a pick up line, they don't like being told that) - but seriously, I'm not saying women are fatter, I'm saying that they have another layer of fat that men don't and thus can handle low temperatures better than men can. More than likely, Jack and Rose could both fit on the door, but Jack would have still died from hypothermia while Rose would have survived just long enough for the boat to get her.
    The funniest part out of all of this is that James Cameron was petty enough to make a documentary about this just to show everyone how wrong they are and how right he is XD
