I watched an interview with Dennis Franz and he was asked if Andy actually took a drink and he stated that he did out of respect for Sylvias heritage and family. But he also showed Sylvia that he was in control of his addiction by putting the glass down without hesitation. That's why Sylvia was so shocked. Sheron Lawrence and Dennis Franz had great chemistry together.

My proof was the amount of liquid was the same when he was handed the glass and when he put it down. This was before hdtv and the ability to rewind/pause. So I was just making stuff up to prove my point. Back when you could do that and had to wait till the summer for reruns.

All this was a little too much for Andy at this point in his life with Sylvia and his recovery, doubly so since it seems Andy himself didn't have much of a family life when he was growing up and had never experienced anything like this.

This is the closest that the 'edgy' TV show got to an 'interracial' relationship (LOL) even in the 90s. Americans are so funny. Showing a body dismembered is fine, but to display a black-white relationship on NYPD blue is something they would never do. Even the Hispanic dated the Hispanic, and the Sicilian actor dated the Sicilian actress.
Didn't Kirk kiss Uhura back in the 60s? And James Bond went a little further with some other black actress. I want to say those were the first black/white interactions I ever saw in entertainment media.
