Quick updated video on changing the thermal paste on a Nintendo Switch.
I have done this method on all the Switches I have ever had/fixed and all have worked perfect.
Everyone has an opinion on the right amount of thermal paste but I am happy on what I use.

this is pretty much the most in depth guide on how to remove the cpu sheild. I chipped off a 1 uf cap near the m92 chip trying to bend the all the shield pins.
It is not easy trying to get it off, I've bent a lot of tweezers attempting!

I Bent my CPU heat shield beyond repair because it was held on stupidly Tight and despite being PAINFULLY cautious in removing it. I ended up adding a small amount of paste to the both the Heatsink itself and the CPU and Surprisingly, my Switch runs even better and so much cooler than it did before without that Thin shield.
The shield is mostly to protect the CPU from outside elements like dust and moisture, the thermal paste inside the shield also gets protected, exposed dies in consoles or laptops don't really need it but the switch being very thin, portable and also targeted to all ages, needs some form of protection even if it affects thermals a bit, so you should be a bit more careful with your switch if you no longer have the shield
@@richieMP118I’ve been Careful with protecting my electronics since Day 1 and haven’t run any any problems since that happened. The chips next to the cpu, I added some black tape to cover them from coming into contact with the Aluminum shield. Plus I used high performance silver based paste on both the Heatsink and cpu which I feel did a better job than the factory silicon based stuff

Im planning on trying this eventually. V1 switch is getting a bit hotter recently (SoC hitting 62) Shitting bricks just thinking about it. The closest thing on ifixit didnt cover all the places to replace the thermal paste so thank you man.
Its ok I am glad it helps. Main thing, careful when removing sd card connector as it can break easy (the pins on the motherboard), disconnect the battery and then just be careful removing heat shield over the chips.
@@fixingmoddingbuilding thank you, some people in the ifixit comments suggested taking the foam off the SD card connector and placing it back on afterwards because of the difficulty of seeing where you're putting it in and damaging something
@@Anreii Yes, peel the foam off and than when you reconnect the connector its easier to line it up. Dont need to peel it off when first removing the sd connector.
@@fixingmoddingbuilding thanks for the help man, this helped a lot when doing it. Sadly my temps seem pretty much the same though, cleaned my fan out too. Dunno what else to do for the temps just hope they're ok in the long run lol :(
@@Anreii I am waiting to get a spare Switch but I am testing "Honeywell- PTM7950 Thermal Pads". Someone recommended these to me they are pads but you use them instead of thermal paste.
My laptop overheats every time I render a video but since using these pads it has never overheated and shut off!
I am hoping they can be used on a Switch too and give the same effect?
Why not use the needle in all the heat shield? You can use a cotton swab to clean the transistors and a small brush.👍🏼
You can do but because the other points are close to small components for some people is not worth the risk of knocking them off.
thanks for this, I've watched countless videos on this and this video is the correct one! Also, do you think applying a thermal pad on top of the memory chips will help them?
It sounds like a good idea, however I would be reluctant to make drastic changes. Nintendo have brought out several variants of switch over the past few years and I feel if they haven't done something like that there must be a reason?

I just replaced my thermal paste in my switch but i was not messing with that small panel lol but my over heating problem went away and my fan doesn't sound like a jet engine anymore 😅 lol
unfortunately, under that small panel is where the most important thermal paste that needs to be changed is.

is it ok if i help myself with covering CPU and under the heatpipe more eavenly, with the help of a tooth stick? That might avoid to push the cover down.
Also, should i clean the old paste from the tiny resistors as well? they got covered bad even in this video
You can do, you should really remove all of the old before applying fresh.
Is isopropyl alcohol safe to use when cleaning the old thermal paste off?

Yes, but it needs to be 90% or greater. Anything less has too much water in it.

You don't want it really think, it's supposed to be a thin layer that helps conduct the heat away from the hot zones.

I have the 2019 version, i don't think i need to change the thermal paste yet. If i do tho, i'll have someone do it for me.
