    Whoa! You really got me to take a look at my setup. I’m an 11.5 boot (currently on Salomon Dialogue), so I bought a W board thinking I needed it. When I looked at the angles that my heel and toe would need in order to drag me down, I know that there’s no way I’m catching a boot edge at my skill level. I could probably ride a regular width board. That opens up a lot of possibilities for me since I’m also slim and tall in body size! Thank you for taking the time to send this message!

My thoughts were with 3bt, added width and stiffness I could take a true twin board and make it perform a little better in powder/freeride especially if I adjust my binding positions, but still be an all mountain and park board. Also in the end it’s only 1.2cm wider than my other all mountain deck. I was wondering if I was on to something with the thought process or have I just wasted my time and money haha

    I feel I one that this video doesn't fully apply to. But as a size 12 rider who started in the early 90's I figured I should reply. I moved to a more serious set up around 2000. Its was a 164 wide board from ride. It could rip a carve great but wasn't overly fun in tighter stuff. 2005 I moved to a regular board and it was fine at a160 length. I am 6ft 180lbs. Much more fun to be on. I Had no issues on steeps carving over and dragging my hand. I've done the board tilt thing and also determined that it would be a nasty carve to lean that far. I've always wondered just how steep it would need to be for that to be an issue, pretty damn steep that most inbound terrain just doesnt have I assume. But still to this day when I look at boards wide stuff is still recommend or the volume shifted stuff. I don't know... that said the waist width is something that always bothered me. I don't care what the waist width is, at least for sizing. Would rather know the width at the binding mounts as boards have different side cuts. I think some provide this but rarely. Thanks for confirming what I found out for myself over the years.

    Hello !
    Im close to buy a Jones Mountain Twin 156W or 157 but i can't decide.
    A very experienced (ex pro 2000ish) neighbor told me to get the 156W but all the shops seem to tell me to go 157 instead as it would be a mistake going wide.
    Im 177cm 80kg boot size 27 MP (Nitro anthem). My feet size 268mm but my boot overall is near 300mm, measuring outside. It is equivalent to US9 at nitro but ive tried Salomon boots and im equivalent to a US10 there to be more comfy.
    I would have it mounted with Union Force bindings, or STR.
    The board waist width doesnt seem to have a huge difference from regular to wide (1cm ish) but given i keep my boards 10 years i really want to be sure lmao.
    Im more of a slope- all mountain guy, i have some experience (been riding for 15 years but im something like average imo. All slopes, bit of powder, small rotations like 360 on bumps).
    For now i ride a Apo Line 157 and i have 2cm hang from the board each front and back, and some shops (waxing) told me it was a bit much.
    Thank you very much and sorry for the inconvenience !

      Like Matt said and demonstrated in the videoin the video, it's all personal preference but there is no need for a wide board unless your foot is over a size 12. As long as your boots are centered on the board you will be more than fine, especially with a size 9-10US. Also if you are having trouble figuring out your boots size, check out this video that shows you how to know if you have the correct fit no matter what sizing guide you are following -> th-cam.com/video/bnN6ENRyoBc/w-d-xo.html

    this was the video I was looking for! I'm 175-180lbs, 5'10" and I was freaking out thinking I needed a wide board as I wear a 9.5 ride deadbolt zonaland I see the overhang of the boots on the board as I ride 15/0 regular stance. A lot of articles/people are recommending wide boards for stability, etc and toe/heel drag, but looking at those angles most people will never hit those carves, which is why the video was so helpful - i probably won't, maybe in a few more seasons, if ever... So I'll end up sticking with the 159cm Ride Mountain Pig (252ww) instead of the 160w (261ww), and I also considered the 162cm at 257ww. Would you agree with my sizing or do you think differently? With an inch ir slightly less of overhang, Isn't it going to boot out and deeper powder snow as opposed to artificial packed?

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When you get into deep powder the snow is light an fluffy and you are not digging in with your edges like you do on harder packed snow. The softer the snow is the less you are actually carving hard and as you carve your board is sliding away from the carve more making a wider cut in the snow where there is slightly more room for your boot. And if you get into some of those slushy conditions where there is some harder snow underneath 9 times out of 10 its deep enough to hit you boot wether its hanging off the board or not. Hopefully that makes sense, I might have to make a follow up video actually 🤔

    I took a deal on EVO for a 160W Jones Hovercraft 5 ft 10 and 180 pounds. I bought 10 Burton step-on boots and medium step-on bindings. This won't allow me to carve quick, but should it benefit me in powder and freeride? It is directional, so I will likely have it set to 15/0. What are your thoughts? There is an 8 mm (.31 in) difference, which doesn't seem like much in waist width.

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your setup with the 160W Jones Hovercraft should work well for powder and freeriding. The Hovercraft's directional shape and floaty design excel in deep snow, making it a great choice for those conditions. While the 8 mm difference in waist width might not seem significant, it can help provide a bit more stability, especially with wider feet in Step-On boots. The 15/0 stance should offer a good balance for both powder performance and maneuverability. Overall, it sounds like a solid choice for your riding style!

      @@PeterGlennSports Yeah, I have been riding for 28 years now and have never ridden a wide. I guess I would just like to feel the difference. I ride a Capita BSOD, so a fairly still board.

      @@nicklarson801 Yeah, thats the hard part about wide boards, with the little extra width "technically" it will hold a little more weight but then the board is slower edge to edge and harder to push the edge in without a bigger foot. If you are looking at more all mountain/park style boards like the Huck Knife pro I'd look at the Never Summer Proto Ultra 160. Twin Tip, park shape but with more all mountain style guts and slightly stiffer than most boards with a similar riding style-> www.peterglenn.com/product/never-summer-proto-ultra-snowboard-mens-1

    Need your opinion on the new capita Megadeath. Smallest size is 156cm, worried about the with being too wide for me. I’m 5’4, weigh 150lbs with gear, wears size 8 boots. Planning to use it as my all mountain freeride board. For comparison My current daily quiver is a custom 150cm and my freeride powder board is a 147 Libtech orca. I’m a intermediate aggressive rider but I think the 156 will be too wide especially in between trees, carving. Thanks!

      It definitely might feel a little sluggish but one thing that is good to note. If you can handle the aggressiveness of the Mega Death then you will be able to handle the extra width. If you are not sure, you might be better off on something like a 152 HTH for an all mtn/freeride style board.

    Great video Dude. Incredibly helpful. I was having a nervous breakdown when i put my large est Malavitas on a burton antler 157.5 length and i noticed the toe hang. Coincidentally my antler board is 251 waist width and I have size 12 boots so this video, visual aid and your explanations were very helpful. I was concerned I needed to pull my bindings more toward the heel side edge to prevent toe overhang or get a different board. In your visual aid the bindings look completely centered on that board. Should i have the est binding in the red reference line?

    I really like the new YES Jackpot 2025 snowboard. I am looking for a new park board that is slightly more aggressive and can handle stomping medium/large jumps (30-50 ft). I was bummed to realize they don't carry this board in a "wide" version, and I've only ever purchased wide boards. I wear size 11.5 salomon launch BOA SJ park boots, and I've generally ridden boards with a waist width of 25.8cm and up. The YES jackpot 158cm board has a waist width of 25.6cm. Would you recommend buying this board for the aggressive park riding and maybe a little all mountain riding I will be doing, or would you suggest I size up and go with a wider board? For additional context I am 6'0 and 180lbs.

      The 2 millimeter difference in waist width isn't going to be much smaller then the waist width of the other boards you are currently riding. it is going to be a great board for your riding style you can definitely get away with it if you are riding a 15, -15 stance. Going up in size wouldn't hurt either like finding a Libtech board with their wides they go up to 26.8 in waist width which would still be killer for in and out of the park going through the trees and doing some bigger cornice drops.

    So, I'm 6' and 165lbs size 11 boot. Looking for another board to complement my 155 name dropper. That board is a lot of fun, but as I've gotten older I really want more of an all mountain hard charger, something that's going to carve like a knife, but still hit side hits and good sized jumps. The name dropper gets a little squirrely at high speed through the chatter and it becomes a lot of work to get that thing to carve hard at speed (especially heel side). Was looking at the burton custom camber and was wondering what size you'd recommend? Was thinking either 158 or 158W, wide only because it feels like my heels can dig into the snow sometimes on really hard heel edge carves on the name dropper (maybe just the nature of that board being rocker and softer?) My stance is centered on that board, heel/toe overhang, but maybe I don't need a wide board? Let me know what you think. Thanks!

      Yeah definitely no need for the wide with a size 11. I would bump up to the 162 though. You are on the lighter side for your height but you still have a higher center of gravity and more leverage over the board. Plus if you are keeping the Name Dropper for park/chill riding the 158 is too close in size. You’ll want a little more stability for high speed riding and carving. Not at all, like Matt said in the video even a size 12 doesn’t necessarily need a wide

    Dude this video helped so much, I was really wanting the aeronaut at first in the 159 or 61 with a size 12, don’t see myself carving that low ever no matter how good I am, don’t really want to either lol thoughts?

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Aeronaut is definitely a dope board and you'll be fine with a 12. The 161 even has as a 25.9 waist which is the width of some "wide" boards on the market.

    Hi there! Looking at a Gnu Forest Bailey 4x4 and can't decide on the 157 or 160. Their respective widths are 25.5 & 25.7, and flex of 6 & 7 (10=stiff). I'm 6'0", 175lbs and size 11 shoe. I like to butter and press, trying to get something that's a little more all-mountain than my 156w skate banana. Should I opt for the 160 even though it's stiffer than the 157? I assume my shoe size and the slight mm waist difference won't matter much in the end. Any input is appreciated!

      @PeterGlennSports  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      With how tall you are you would have a blast on the 160 because you already have a board for other conditions/ park.

    Just got the vans infuse size 10. Their footprint is actually almost identical to my previous thirtytwo TM2 in size 11 (I sized them wrong, Oops). Should I go for the Jones mountain twin in 160 (25.7cm waist width) or 162W (26.3cm waist width)? Thanks!

      Just like Matt said in the video, no need for a wide with anything 12 or under. Just personal preference at that point.

    Man, great video but now I’m second guessing my recent purchase of the Mega Death. I bought a 161W based on the weight recommendation and the customer service rep primarily. I’m 5’11”, 205lbs, 11.5 size boot. The range for that board is up to 210 with everything else up to 200. You think it’s worth trying to exchange? I don’t want to sacrifice much pop, but maneuverability is probably more important. I appreciate your thoughts!

      Up to you, I personally am 5'11" 200lbs with a size 11 boot and rode the 159 with zero issues. Also like Matt said in the video. Depending on your exact skill level and how hard you are actually carving you might not need the wide.

    Hi, I'm 205lbs size 12.5 shoes, I rented a board last season that was 160 which was fine, but I'm looking to purchase 158 or 159. Do you think that's too small? Or I should stick to 160(like the one I rented)? I'm looking for something easier to turn so I can carve and go edge to edge easier.

    • @PeterGlennSports

      @@ADeleven Honestly at 6' 205 you might want to stick with boards in the low 160-164 range unless you are planning on getting a board for only riding park. Check out this video about sizing for a great explanation about proper sizing -> th-cam.com/video/imGSIiw-vQA/w-d-xo.html

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's up to personal preference for sure. If you're gonna be doing heavy carving the wide is typically a smarter option but you can get away with a regular board as long as there's not too much overhang.

    Im a 295 lb, 5' 11", size 12 Burton boot, beginner. I have the 161w Skink ape from a couple years back. Does this make sense for me? I did a couple of days at keystone last year on it and it seemed fine, but maybe there are better options?

    • @PeterGlennSports
      @PeterGlennSports  ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be fine on that board. Ideally you'd want something a little closer to the mid 160's would give you more stability and edge hold. Especially as you start riding at faster speeds. Another grerat option is volume shift boards, where you can have a board that is a little closer to your height requirements but feel like bigger boards under your feet. Check out this video about those -> th-cam.com/video/4uehOtKStNg/w-d-xo.html

    If you are an advaced rider with boot size 10 or more, go for a wide board. You will definitly start to try carving an then it will be the end with a normal board. Always this "edge to edge" 🙈. For an advanced rider this is not an argument.
    The board, you mounted for size 12 boot, is awfull. You will boot out all the time.
    I have boot size 290mm and I ride a burton custom 169W. If it comes to soft snow, I see two Lines in the snow. One from the edge, one from the boot.
    My recommendation for advanced riders: do not by a board with more than 5 mm boot overhang.
