@@n337 actually I believe she was only 14 yo when she took her third class exam. she said a few episodes ago that she's been traveling with frieren for 4 years and she's currently 18 yo (we know this because she was 9 yo when frieren first met her), so if she did take the exam right after heiter's death then she became a third-class mage at the young age of 14 !
First of all, this comment is not mine, but I think it suits really well your questioning of why people don't recognize Frieren. "About knowlegeable people not recognising Frieren, imagine this , we all know who Charles Darwin is, where I live in England there are even a few statues of him, if it wasn't for photography and the fact that I've seen his face in decent resolution with colour I wouldn't be able to pick the man out from a crowd of faces. We remember and identify human faces pretty well, translating a rusted statue to a real person in your mind would be exceedingly difficult. Not being recognized doesn't bother Frieren, though. It seems like she prefers it that way. She gets really uncomfortable when somebody recognizes who she is and makes a big deal out of it.
I'm happy that this episode removed Frieren's invincible aura once and for all. She is certainly powerful, but that doesn't mean there aren't dangers that even she should be wary of.
@@ogami7661 fern being a faster caster has more to do with her innate talent than the years she spent training. also, although frieren has dedicated a lot of her training into creating a scenario where she can beat demons, that's not all she works on nor is her training to beat demons innefective against elfs/humans. She's still overall one of the strongest mages around, it's just that, like she said, there's a lot of factos involved when it comes to a battle betweem mages

Later on, in the manga in this same arc, Frieren is revealed to have a specific weakness in her fighting style that, ironically, Fern with her innately fast casting speed would be in a good position to take advantage of.
Lawine didn't say she didn't want to fight Frieren because she knew she was suppressing mana - she said it based on the mana she COULD see - which is still that of an old mage and quite impressive. As we see later in the series it takes a VERY talented mage to detect it - something beyond poor Lawine.
Everything Frieren accomplished was like 100 years ago at this point, she's a name in a history book at most and far less known and accomplished than Himmel and Heiter who went on to do a lot of things after the demon king was slain. Even so, all of them are little more than statues and names in history, they have never met her so they won't recognise her face, it's happened several times already that they don't recognise her even if her name carries weight. This is one of the reasons why Frieren thinks the way she does as human lives are short so their memory is also short since all the people who will remember you will be soon dead. Flamme is a legendary figure who seems more like a myth 1000 years later but Frieren remembers her very clearly as her master and the things she did while alive which still effect the world today. Frieren was far less famous or impactful than Flamme who designed the current magic system and bought forward human magic advances, so if Flamme is a mythical figure where nobody would be able to say what she looks like then Frieren has even less chance of anybody knowing her. We know what she did as viewers was impactful because we see moments from their journey as a very real thing but the average person in the world would only hear these as spoken tales without the visual aid we get seeing their story play out as it happened. Oh and Frieren was testing Lawine but not to figure out how talented she is or if she could detect if she was hiding her mana, she was simply testing if she could sense mana as it'd be dangerous to walk around alone otherwise as we saw later in the episode. Frieren's mana as we saw earlier on gives off a feeling of an experienced mage, that's what Lawine saw and decided that she wouldn't want that match up which is smart of her and shows she can differentiate mana.
even heiter isn't known by the people like that. they always mention only the hero himmel everytime someone is talking about the hero's party. I mean he was the leader after all, so the credits naturally fall to him, and the others certainly weren't bothered by that, especially frieren who actually gets uncomfortable when receiving attention.
Frieren seems to be able to change how much of her mana she is hiding at any given moment. Her mana aura during this exam is several times larger than the mana aura she exhibited when she was fighting Aura (before she dropped the charade). She probably drops it extra low when facing Demons in order to fool them, but when she is among humans, she may, if the circumstances are appropriate, let it rise higher. Because in an exam situation like this she probably wants to project the appearance of an experienced and powerful mage, even if she's still hiding her full strength. Like she wouldn't want to fool her own teammates into thinking she isn't capable and possibly overcompensating to needlessly cover for her apparent weakness, and she wouldn't want to make other teams to think she is an easy target for an ambush either.

I didn't get any romantic feelings between them when I read the manga, but seeing the anime I can get where you guys are coming from in shipping Lawine and Kanne. Just never expected it, just thought of them as besties all this time that I was used to it.
I might be 7 months late, but I think the reason why Frieren is still not that known is because she never really did anything else even before and after the Demon King was killed, just killing demons, and Flamme also told her to Lay Low of her profile which I think for the purpose of Demons not finding who she is. and even if Their party killed the demon king, its always the Hero who will get Acknowledged first
it's really interesting how even though frieren was part of the same hero party as himmel, himmel seems to be the only one that people remember. but he was also actively making an effort to be remembered (so that his memory continues to exist throughout frieren's life after they're all gone) whereas i don't think frieren really cared back then. so it makes sense to me that even if there are statues of frieren (along with the rest of the party) that the populace only remembers her as "the elf in the hero party" and don't recognize her
I hope Übel and Stark meet each other. I think the "bad girl" could make a great foil for Fern. I'm really intrigued by her character, and her VA is Ikumi Hasegawa who gave us the voices for Lena Melieze and Kita Kita. And to have a brief scene between one of my fave up and coming VAs and one of the GOATs was pure joy on my ears!

These are the information we have on her till now: *Her name is Ubel (this STILL doesn't mean she's a villain) *She killed some bandits (this also means absolutely nothing, like...who gives a crap about some random bandits lives?) *She ended up failing in the last exam bc she killed the examiner (we still don't have enough information of what exactly happened, but this STILL doesn't mean she is a villain) People thinking she is gonna be a problem i know it's understandable...but already saying they won't like her bc she is "evil"????????? C'mon now...She literally did nothing no anyone till now. I'm sorry but i'm not gonna judge a character for what they MIGHT do in the future. About killing....people really are that gullible to think ONLY SHE is willing to do that???? This is a test. And the point of the whole thing was to illustrate the fact that having the most mana does not necessarily correlate with being the better mage.
