Denken is an example of the “beware an old man in a profession where men die young”, he might not be the most powerful but you don’t survive so long without being smart
Denken is low-key one of the best characters in the test arc. He's an experienced older mage who has lived through a lot, he's not lived nearly as long as Frieren has but he's the only one with her level of intelligence in the whole test group. He's not somebody you'd want to mess with.
Not sure if this was deliberate on the writers’ part or if tenets of real world evolutionary biology/ecology apply to a fantasy world, but the Stille’s abilities could be considered subtle and ominous foreshadowing of the existence of the big monster birds and the potential threat they pose. Supersonic flight with near instantaneous acceleration, physical resilience on par to a dragon, can detect the faintest trace of mana and flees instantly when it does so, and is itself nearly invisible to mana detection. These are predator defence adaptions. Why would a small bird need such abilities, unless it shared a habitat with an EXTREMELY dangerous and powerful predator.
Alternatively (completely stealing this from Sir Terry Pratchett) the Strahl mages might have been dumping their mystic trash in the Stilles' environment for thousands of years, and the birds have caught magic out of eating said enchanted garbage, and the general magic contamination in the area. That (and a regular diet of failed examinees) would also explain the monsters.
I feel like Frieren values the fundamentals. Learn basic things, but learn them so well you can do them in your sleep, with your eyes closed, and do them persistently. But as far as Wirbel being ruthless and doing anything to win, that is basically the first thing Flamme taught Frieren. Frieren and therefore Fern are already operating with that mindset, at least when demons are concerned. Maybe they are a bit more easy going against humans.
The basic fundamental spells are also the fastest the cast, and the least likely to go awry in the heat of battle. So they compliment Fern’s talent for rapid casting perfectly. It makes sense that this is what Frieren taught Fern first. Frieren herself will use more complex advanced spells in combat when she feels they are appropriate (and did so more in the past when she was with Himmel’s party) I get the feeling that Wirbel’s reputation for ruthlessness in battle is overblown. Keep in mind that he made a name for himself fighting Demons, so being utterly ruthless against Demons makes sense. But when dealing with humans he’s actually much softer.
@@adamwu4565 You were basically just talking about Wirbel's willingness to be ruthless. But one also needs to have the mindset for underhanded tactics. A person who is used to fighting "honorably" would never even think of good underhanded tactics, even if they would be willing to do it, since they have never practiced thinking that way before.
Wirbel really is more of a soldier, he doesn’t care about the ideals and honor as long as he can accomplish his goal of killing demons and protect humans
She's technically not as she's not any more powerful as far as mana control and technique than anybody else in the test and in some cases she's much less experienced in battle. She's just a prodigy with incredible talent for magic. This is why Lugner and Ehre both already measured her up and felt she couldn't beat them but after they started fighting something felt off because they were suddenly on the backfoot. Ehre has started realising she's struggling to keep up with Fern just as Lugner did.
@@MxMoondoggie Lugner also underestimated her because she was hiding her mana; she might not be as good at it as Frieren yet, but Frieren herself told her she was almost undetectable to mana sensing _before she even started training her_ (and, though untrained, she was already quite powerful, so her mana should've been easy to sense; I assume Heiter, who was aware of Frieren hiding her mana, must have taught that to her, or maybe she's just a natural at it, or both).
As a manga reader, This Exam is very interesting because it's several things at the same time: A survival skills test, a magic combat exam through a Battle Royal, a magic detection test since you would need it to track the bird and the other teams and beasts and also an exam on the broad of magic knowledge since you basically would need some kind of gimmicky magic to catch the bird alive. It was well thought good stuff. Also Denken honors his name, he is definitely a sharp one and probably one of the best characters in Frieren when you get to learn about his back story you'll cry your life out. His view of Mages in Peacetime needed more as politicians and scientists than combat specialists is compelling.
I love that two "rivals" can be close because they push each other *cough Vegeta/Goku* but in this show, their skills literally synchronize. (Had to pull that card lmao) Also I know that Ubel appears to mean "evil" but I really like her char so far. She reminds me of another ruthless char in a show I like recently so I am not at all worried about her. I have a feeling she will have respect for Fern.
oooh do we think our girls will be ok??

15:18 Lawine didn't say this to Frieren, she said this to kanne (the other girl). Lawine is overall very respectful towards Frieren.
I got that two seconds later 😓😓😓
Ya they both are lol. I find it funny, especially with Frieren's face in the background when they fight.

"Scharf, he's hot" is a funny coincidence. Scharf in German means either "sharp" or "spicy", but is also used as slang for "hot" as in "sexy".
Haha yes, I totally overlooked this but u are right, maybe because I am male...

We haven't seen Fern's specialty tho@@adamwu4565
instead of fancy machine gun, Frieren/Fern uses a trusty six-shooter revolver (that suspiciously has unlimited bullets)@@adamwu4565

its so cool to see how specific some spells are, I'm sure next episode we'll learn more cool spells.
RIGHT? I want one that would make me sleepy asap
i am pretty sure, its only freiren who goes around collecting these novel spells.
@@neerajnongmaithem392 that is true but these test takers all have their own signature magic which should be pretty cool to see.
It was so cool to get a confirmation that frieren uses just one old attack spell it totally a thing 🤣
Fern basically smurfing throughout this exam. LMAO
Except Wirbel would actually be able to kill her if they fought xD
yo is some hidden manga spoiler that you know about ?@@nirolf12

フェルンは未熟な幼少期でさえフリーレンが驚くほど魔力を隠すのが得意でした
今ではフリーレンより高度に魔力を隠します
小鳥を捕まえるのは簡単でした
Shit got real this episode. Frieren party came through with a clutch plan 🔥
I think you'll love Denken.
“Mourdo” haha
Stabby stab 🔪
