You didn't noticed how well the composition is as you were fully into that hooks. The composition includes several traditional instruments played because you cannot show much modern electronic instruments for periodic scenes like this

It means that the Music Director (Devi Sri Prasad) had to rope in artists with the actual instruments to compose the score. I remember watching this sequence in theatre and was soooo much into it, that other parts of the movie looked ordinary! as someone mentioned, this first 15 minutes were awesome.other parts part of the movie was ok but this was the most impressive part for e the song, acting, visuals - particularly that cloudy skies and whirling ocean in big screen was sooo impressive!

Trust me they dont feel any pain before n after. I talk with a lot of people who does this puja. They say that god siva n parwati took their pains n they feel nothing. Every year this festival take place. This is the only festival which makes me believe that god is present among us.

In Hindu mythology, God Vishnu (God of protection/presavation) took 10 different births in different times to protect earth and living beings. On shallow, this movie is about a scientist trying to save the world after a bio weapon on loose out of his lab. They still do that peircing and flying as a ritual in my village, where the devotee himself prays to do that once in a year....the devotee will be hanged using the hooks and raised very higgggh like they did here and he will put the garland to the god's statue that will be in much higher Ratham(thear)(usually 30mts) olden days vehicle ....such devotees say "I have been doing this for years and I feel no pain.....I'm delighted and blessed to do this"....they do it happily....it's still a surprise for me😌

The hook thing is still voluntarily practiced for real during some festivals. There's a few images of it in the international Punjabi hit Mundiyan To Bach Ke, it was the first Indian song I saw when I was a teen, it shocked me a little bit lol. Then I learnt that in the west some people practice it "for kicks", in France they call it "suspension", it can be practiced in some piercing studios... Saw some of it in a documentary once and it made me nauseous. The people doing it said that the feeling of the skin being detached from their back was like being high or something... I remember watching this sequence in theatre and was soooo much into it, that other parts of the movie looked ordinary! as someone mentioned, this first 15 minutes were awesome.other parts part of the movie was ok but this was the most impressive part for e the song, acting, visuals - particularly that cloudy skies and whirling ocean in big screen was sooo impressive!
They still do those hooks in the flesh thing in my village. It is not a form of torture though. It is actually a prayer to God done by people willingly. It happens every year. It is called alagu kuthuthal in tamil.

Needles and hooks are still used in religious festivals such as Thaipusam (in honour of Lord Murugan, the son of Shiva). The needles are pierced in tongues, cheeks and all over your body as a ritual of self sacrifice and is intended to defeat inner demons and gain Lord Murugan's blessings...Some people goes one step further to show their devotions, they pierce hooks in their back to pulls chariots carrying Lord Murugan.

In my village young men worship god siva n parvati and after that they are hooked from back of their bodies and were hang in air similar to the beginning part of scene. Trust me they dont feel any pain before n after. I talk with a lot of people who does this puja. They say that god siva n parwati took their pains n they feel nothing. Every year this festival take place. This is the only festival which makes me believe that god is present among us.

It's just the song in the movie, definitely worth the watch, but too many things & contexts to grasp. Better to read some background before you watch the movie. Dasavatharam means 10 avatars ( 10 different births of God). In Hindu mythology, God Vishnu (God of protection/presavation) took 10 different births in different times to protect earth and living beings.
On shallow, this movie is about a scientist trying to save the world after a bio weapon on loose out of his lab. But the movie travels through with connotations of 10 avatars, butterfly effect, connecting this action of centuries before to modern age.

They still do that peircing and flying as a ritual in my village, where the devotee himself prays to do that once in a year....the devotee will be hanged using the hooks and raised very higgggh like they did here and he will put the garland to the god's statue that will be in much higher Ratham(thear)(usually 30mts) olden days vehicle ....such devotees say "I have been doing this for years and I feel no pain.....I'm delighted and blessed to do this"....they do it happily....it's still a surprise for me😌

The hook thing is still voluntarily practiced for real during some festivals. There's a few images of it in the international Punjabi hit Mundiyan To Bach Ke, it was the first Indian song I saw when I was a teen, it shocked me a little bit lol. Then I learnt that in the west some people practice it "for kicks", in France they call it "suspension", it can be practiced in some piercing studios... Saw some of it in a documentary once and it made me nauseous. The people doing it said that the feeling of the skin being detached from their back was like being high or something... I cringe super hard while writing this yuck tuck hopefully Korbin will see this at least and enjoy this important piece of information 😂😂😭
