  • Hello Friends,
Today I show you how to repair one of the best lenses I have ever used, the Nikon Nikkor 28mm f/2 Ai. This lens was sent to me for repair, the very lucky owner found it cheap but in dire condition. It was dirty, the aperture clicking was weak, and the focus was very stiff. In short, the lens wasn't pleasant to use.
Here I show you how to clean this marvel

This is my beloved lens ! Thanks Doctor Extravaganza for bringing it back to perfect condition ! The focus ring is now smooth and "buttery", the dust is gone, the aperture ring clicks like a swiss watch ! It is now ready for another 50 years of service ! I guess it will survive me 🙂. Thanks again for the great service, Doctor !

Might I suggest that so no one makes the mistakes that I did althought this developed my skill set- never use mallets even if you think you're competent enough to go in a straight line, don't overtighten screws, put screws in boxes, use a cloth between pairs of wide gripping pliers to remove lens parts with stuck threads, don't grip on corners because you will scratch them- always grip in the middle of the largest part you can find, dont get angry because you will break things in the lens, if you cannot think of how you should disassemble the lens, put it down and wait till tomorrow, never grip on the lens ring to the point it causes tightness as it will split the lens, dont put grease on a thread that works just fine because it will get it stuck, use as little grease as possible, always use the correct screwdriver, drink water to keep your competence in this art and lastly although you dont need to do this, always mark where one screw on a particular part was to avoid frustration because you'll be annoyed having to tighten the part and untighten it more than once. Never use snipe nose pliers either.

Thanks for sharing these wise words, one can really feel the experience (and a bit of the frustration and pain that gave birth to it) behind your words. On the bright side, it is my opinion that this is a path that needs walking in order to gain a deeper understanding of what repairing a lens means.

Thanks. The Nikkor 20mm f2 is very different to disassemble. The screw under the focus-rubber isn't there, instead there is a slit with an metal. I couldn't find any description about the AI-s version. The focusring doesn't move at all at this lens.

You mean the 28mm F2 ais? Yeah, it is a very different lens but I haven't made any video on that specific lens. Not a very common lens by the way. Cheers.

Great video! Thanks again for posting it! I was able to clean and fix (I hope) my version of this lens. Its a wonderful lens. Though I think I like my 28mm f2.8 AIS a tad better.

Both versions are very good, from comparisons I made, I find the f/2 to be slightly superior but nothing to get worried about, the ais is still king. Cheers.

Great video indeed! Very inspiring! I'm just about to dive in and do my first lens service myself, lubricate a 28 f/2 that has a bit stiff focus. You mention in this video you were about to publish one where you lubricate the lens. Was that ever published? I think I will need all help I can get when doing this for the first time:-)

I found a Nikon NIKKOR 28MM 1:28 for 20 pounds. It had lots of paint missing so I thought it'd be a fiver at first but I saw the price tags online and bought it anyway. If you know how to take the front lens out without one of those rubber tools I'd love to know.@@diyextravaganza
