  • Hello People!
Thanks for joining me for more guitar restoration videos! This Rick had a neck break and needed a new bone nut.
    Cheers,

Great job, Scottie. I like the nut marking tool; kind of a new twist on the “half pencil.”

Awesome video! I always wanted to work on guitars like this. I can service my own EXCEPT nuts and frets. Ugh the most important skills!!!

Great video! Those Rickenbacker electric guitars are certainly quite different from anything else. Once mastered the 12 string guitars produce a unique sound that’s been featured on many classic recordings over last sixty odd years.

Wow! Your guitar repair/luthiery business must be really successful for you to afford a Van Gogh!

I've always kinda liked that body shape. I would turn that into a generous sized 6.
    I have a Jay Turser JT220 that I love.

I have a Jay Turser 12 string Phantasia, a copy of a Vox Phantom 12 string. It has a strat style pickup selector switch and a push/pull pot which allows you to get additional pickup selections including neck/bridge and all three. It's hard to find any info about them. Even called Jay Turser and they didn't know much. I shimmed the neck and put a Ernie Ball light gauge 12 string set on it and it plays like a dream.

Now I know that's how the Beatles and others got their twelve string parts to sound so different. I never saw a Rickenbacker twelve string before and never knew the string pattern was different but I knew their sound was different from other twelve strings.

In the late 70's, I worked up enough money to buy a real guitar. It came down to two choices a Rick 430 or a Tokia LS 80. Like a Bone Head I picked the Rick.

What I’ve found a problem with on some Ricks is the type of finish they used until 2009; I believe. Some type of catalyzed something or other that would sometimes become soft and get fingerprints wherever you handled the instrument. I had two just like that. Always kept in their cases but maybe think that that finish can’t really handle hot and humid climates. I had to get mine wet sanded and polished and after keeping them in air conditioned environments the finish stabilized.

That Rick is so iconic... I mean, THAT HEADSTOCK! Right? However, that Turser wasn't sounding bad at all. Nice pups. Question - You never really showed the final shaping of the nut and specifically the string geometry with regards to the height of the fundamental compared to the octave on the E A and D strings. Were they level, or was the fundamental string slightly lower to compensate for the downward strum? Thanks again for another great video, Mr. Scott!! Cheers!!

Cheers! For the string slot height at the nut, each pair is level on the bottom side of the string. Equal distance to the top of the frets. The tops of the string pairs uneven.

@@harpethguitar Makes sense regarding pitch accuracy. And it doesn't seem to hinder the pair being struck accordingly. It sounded wonderful! Thank you, sir!!

Lovely guitar! Should it not be a black nut on a Rick?
