I had one of those exact models. I'm thinking mine was a 1929. It sounded great. My ex wife smashed it against tree as I was pulling up the driveway. That was in the seventies. I picked it up at a pawn shop for 50 bucks. We're divorced and she's dead. I'm still mad at her for it especially after watching this.
There's a special place in hell reserved for people that deliberately break guitars.

I had this exact model . I bought it in 1986 for $475.00
It was a fantastic guitar . In 2008 I got married and unfortunately had refinance my house and do a credit card repair program. So I had the L-00 appraised for a quick sale
by a highly respected dealer at the time . I was told that it needed a neck reset and a fret job it would cost about $1000.00 but I could ask " the sky is the limit " for the return from the right person . Unfortunately I had heard this before for another 2 guitars one of which was not mine .
I managed to keep it for another year then I listed it on Craigslist for $ 2000.00 ,So I get a prospect , wouldn't you know it was the repairman from the same shop . So , I needed the money and I 've regretted it ever since . Don't even remind me of the time I turned down the '58 Les Paul Jr . for $300.00 .
Great job, that guitar has a great sound
It helps to keep that lump from forming over the dovetail if you put a clamp from the bottom of the dovetail to over the fb right after you get the neck out, and let it dry that way. You will have had expansion of the wood in the dovetail from being hot and wet and that helps compress it back down and keeps the heel straight. PS: Not sure why you felt the need for a wedge under that fb extension. PPS: No saddle tweak for intonation between the high E and B strings?

Great stuff. The steam for neck removal always makes me nervous. I like your use of automotive past wax to protect the surface finish. Still water (or in this case boiling hot water vapor) and wood don’t typically go well together.
I’ve seen the use of heat lamps, too, but they cast such a wide beam, they make me a bit skittish, too. Have you tried a pair of styrofoam cutters from a hobby store? They slide right down in those holes at the 15th fret and heat up the neck joint thru concentrated dry heat. Real game changer for me.

Sometimes the job requires steam so I use both!
I have a Gibson L00 of similar age and condition. One day I’ll have all the work done to it.
Given how easily heat softened it, the black stuff could be hot glue. If so, isopropyl alcohol will help it release. It won't dissolve the glue but you'll be able to peel it off much more easily.

Beautiful; this one looks very similar to the Kalamazoo that Robert Johnson reportedly used for his recordings (the famous Gibson L-1 reportedly was only borrowed for the photo session but was not the guitar in the recordings).
My 65 Texan has one of the narrowest necks of any guitar I've ever seen or played.. The V shape on the guitar your working on is like what's on my Recording King RD-328. It takes a bit to get used to.. lol

Yes! I’ve used them on 4 different jobs so far. It takes a long time and it leaves scorch marks on the dovetail. But yes, I have 3” and 4” foam cutters in the toolbox 😀

Nice work! However, please don’t glue the saddle down. It’s not going anywhere and it’s a pain if you need to adjust the saddle.

Ure talking about that V shape on that neck I also hate a neck shaped like that they are very difficult to chord . I have owned 1 Gibson dove 1 martin D76 ( Sorriest Guitar I ever owned) and 2 Epiphone J200 and all had the C neck which I like the best of any of them. Believe it or not I like the epiphones Jumbo J200 best of all

Thanks David! I just restored the tone in my LG-1 by fixing the mangled bridge plate. It took 10 minutes! Now it’s time for a neck reset.

If you really want to break down hide glue, try meat tenderizer. It's made to break down animal protiens. Problem is you must remove all residue before redoing the glue.
Masterful. I love to see the old ones live and sing again. I have a "58" LG 0 that I want to restore. Someone put a janky pickguard on it. Do you know where I could get a pattern for an older LG 0 so I can make a new pickguard?
Not for a ‘58 but I would use Mylar over the ‘58 pickguard footprint, trace it with a sharpie, cut it out and there you go! 😀
@@harpethguitar Many thanks. Sadly when they put on the janky pickguard, they sanded away the original footprint. 😵💫 I have a 60s model LG 0. I may just make a guard from that. Again Many thanks.

But i have to say you are wrong when talking about saliva and hide glue. Saliva didn't contain enzyme capable of break down hide glue. Hide glue is mostly protein (gelatin like). Saliva enzymes mostly degrade starch (amylase) and also fat (lipase).
Hi, I'm a new subscriber. I enjoyed your video a lot. There's just one thing. I am a maker and repairer of stringed instruments and have been for many years and I don't recall any professional luthier glueing in a saddle before. In fact, it is a ballache for the next guy. What was the reasoning behind this? I'm not criticizing, just curious.
Thanks for subscribing! The “through” saddles are almost always glued in, especially Martins. Drop in saddles, never. Brian Kimsey does this a lot and he explains it in his videos. Check him out! 🎸
@@harpethguitar Thanks. Yes, I know manufacturers do it but I was wondering why it was necessary. Would you still recommend it with an under saddle pickup?
I would never glue in a saddle that had an under saddle pick up. I think it is a good idea to glue in the cut through saddles because they are so expensive to make. They are very fragile on the ends, and if it fell out during a string change or something, it might get broken.
You make it look easy!! But I know better.
What type and gauge strings did you put on?
I think .011’s or .012’s
