      Hey Max, you know what would be interesting? Connecting those Macs to the 6K XDR display (and normal 4K ones too maybe). It is my understanding according to some tweets that the display pipeline has been revamped and connecting an external monitor is close to instant and changing resolutions (default, scaled and others) is “don’t blink” fast.

      @@kevin.callens I just hope that someday we can go back more towards the $499 price point at which the first Mac mini started. I know there is inflation, but even the base iPad has become cheaper over time, despite inflation. If the mini were $599 with the base model in 2022, I would be happier, and even more people would be able to buy one. But with the performance you get with the M1, I guess Apple needs to first introduce the M1X and M2, or else an even cheaper mini M1 would be too much value for the money, right? Can't have that! Haha! But I do think Apple really needs to flood the market with M processor Macs that have more value than Intel Macs could ever offer. Heck, HomePod mini starts at $99, so Apple could move slightly more towards value.

    Hi Max! The biggest question is "8GB vs 16GB in FCPX for 4K editing". I've seen another TH-camr test 8GB M1 Mac with a 20 minute project in FCPX and he ran into "Application has ran out of memory" problem on an 8GB model which made me worried about getting an 8GB. But... it is $200 more which could be spent on a larger SSD. So, decisions decisions=) I am looking forward to more tests from you and hopefully that will help me choose the right config. Thanks for the content

  • @geraldbaria
    @geraldbaria 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Thank you so much for this! Learned a lot. I am seeing a pattern. 1. M1s strength seems to be H265, as long as your editing an H265 footage at ANY resolution and exporting it at H265 it will beat everything. 2. The ram may improve the graphics performance too since its a UNIFIED MEMORY, with 16GB RAM, that might leave 10GB Memory for the GPU and it might help push these RAW formats forward.

    Great video. What an amazing 1st gen Chip from Apple. Max, my 2019 MacPro with the 16 core, and the same video card as yours, plays the R5 10bit footage perfectly smoothly. Timeline skimming is also super smooth. No render, or transcoding needed. I can even add luts and color grade and no problem. On Resolve, it does slightly stutter while skimming, but timeline playback is perfectly smooth. Wonder if the 16 core has some other advantage. Not sure though

    • @AG-bh7cg
      @AG-bh7cg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problems lies in CPU encoding/decoding processes on hardware level. If required hardware codes are missing than there's only one chance how to playback such type of file smoothly: as much as possible cores in CPU.

    • @genx-tv
      @genx-tv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, in pure performance AMD still trounces Apple. The M1 is good, but it's meant for power savings. When next year the M1X or M2 comes out, Apple might come on top of AMD, as Apple will add more high performance cores. Although in performance per Watt, AMD will still not come close to Apple -- M1 uses 15 W max and comes close to the best AMD at 30 W. All in all, goodbye Intel. It's really strange that AMD is used so little in computers.

So please suggest should I go for the M1 processor (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) or the Intel i5 (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD)? Will 512GB SSD be sufficient or should I go for 1 TB? 21:41 yes and no. Virtualization and emulation are not interchangeable words. Emulation is completely running the app on the ‘software’, while virtualization is translating the code for the chip to understand it better. So, while it ISN’t using the CPU to its full potential, it IS using those dedicated hardware blocks for video encoding/decoding.

    Typing this from the m1 pro. Haven't had a chance to really use it much but it feels like it's one of those obedient dogs that are calm as can be, but just waiting to be cut loose and do what it needs to. The battery estimate is insane...72% and still showing 20 hours left (I think it maxes out at showing 20 hours as estimate so its actually more than that) while watching TH-cam videos, downloading the whole GarageBand library of sounds, etc at the same time. And the body is cold as can be, no warmth at all.

    A lot of people are talking about how much they’re looking forward to the higher end models with discrete graphics... but I wonder if that’s missing the point of Apple’s SoCs. The fact that the graphics are integrated into the same chip as the CPU, along with the RAM tied to both of them... that’s where these massive performance gains are coming from. The tight, physical integration and sharing of memory is what’s allowing them to smoke other systems.

    • @kninezbanks
      @kninezbanks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think that is what they mean.....What they mean is more powerful apple silicon chips......Like the Apple M2 for the Macbook Pro 16 being released next year (2021) with a 50-60W TDP compared to the 10-15W M1, that thing will be a beast.....Easily besting most high end gaming laptops with 230-330W Power bricks...while the Macbook Pro 16 will have a 96W Adapter.......apple always said their goal was desktop performance, with mobile soc power. Can't wait.

      @pena2050 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I can see how Apple might forego discrete graphics in the thermally constrained devices, like laptops and iMacs. They can make whatever SoC they want for these, a unified chip with 8 graphic cores like they have now, but they can add cpu and graphics cores for the 16 inch MacBook Pros or iMacs. These machines might have 10 cpu cores and 12 gpu cores--whatever Apple wants they can do.
