- Reaction To 10 Stunning Places in the Netherlands They Don’t Want You to Know
This is my reaction to 10 Stunning Places in the Netherlands They Don’t Want You to Know
In this video I react to Dutch travel, Dutch cities, Dutch geography and beautiful places in Netherlands.
Original Video - • Top 10 Stunning Places...
The video title is a bit wrong, these are not destinations unknown but actually some of them are the most touristically active.
I would suggest to just go out there, grab a train and rent a bike, travel the country.
edit:
I was holding back a bit, but now I see it mentioning Volendam, Zaanse Schans, Giethoorn.. These are places flooded with tourists and not at all 'best kept secrects'. In fact they are so flooded with tourists, you will not see many Dutch people enjoying these locations.
Don't get me wrong, nice video and for non Dutchies probably interesting places to go, just the title and some commentary is misleading.
ps.
For when you visit the Netherlands:
at mass tourist locations the Dutch will be rude to tourists on bikes, but venture out for 5 mins and we will adore you for visiting our country on bike. You will not meet a more hospitable country when it comes to cycling around, you will be immediatly loved.
i do agree with you on that haha people from Giethoorn are saying they have to many tourists who want to take boat rides and they constantly crash thier boats etc.
All tourist traps...
Nijmegen is very nice, especially during 'the walk of the world' marches.
Eindhoven with it's light festival.
Lots of nature parks, when you're looking for more quiet times.
Tourist traps not so much, you are not being baited or swindled there. But mass tourism? yes, for sure these locations already see masses of tourists a year.
All us dutchies in comments, we should create a proper hidden gem list to be honest :P
Ill add my hometown Enkhuizen, for its pitoresk and historic city centre with many marina/harbours. The Zuiderzeemuseum and Sprookjeswonderland themepark. The many ways to enjoy the water. Combined with a visit to nearby towns of Hoorn and Medemblik surely worth the visit.
The Netherlands has about 30 cities with close to or above 100K inhabitants. I'd say about 80% of them are definitely worth a visit.
100% true
proud to be Dutch
These are very touristic places. Try Zutphen, Bronkhorst, Nijmegen, Zwolle, ‘s Hertogenbosch, Breda, Efteling, Middelburg, Groningen, Leeuwarden.
Best sea food in Scheveningen , yes many more castles. And many more beautiful towns👍 keep up your good work mate 👊
There are about 700 castles in the Netherlands, not counting fortified settlements, palaces and country mansions. The oldest castles date back from the 13th century ...
All places mentioned in this video are not hidden gems, they are all very touristy. They are worth visiting though, but don't forget the real hidden gems ...
I went to Giethoorn as a kid when it was still just a day trip attraction for people from the region. I thought it was boring, water and thatched roofs aren't very special to Dutch kids, Venice impressed me much more. Typical for the Netherlands is that some assistant hotel manager from there took the plane to China in the early 2000s to promote it at a tourism expo and now it suffers from overtourism.
The village you see at the beach at 5.56 is Noordwijk aan Zee. I live close to the lighthouse. It used (and still is) to be quite famous as a holiday destination and resort for many celebs. Faded glory though as the fun is long gone now….
On grey rainy days visit places like Rotterdam, Zoetermeer, Arnhem, Vlissingen, Almere.
Or in empty fields. Greenish brownish ground with grey skies as far as you can see. You'll understand how much effort the locals put in. Otherwise it still would marshes and rain
6:18.. welcome to my city, i hope you enjoy the view..!!
8:45.. this is where my mom lives, say HI MOM..!!! hahaha
They are Beautiful
Another famous building with striking architecture is Zendgebouw Radio Kootwijk. Area surrounding it is beautiful too if you like taking a walk through nature. It's a 15 minute drive for me, so I do it a lot. I also really like Giethoorn. My father is a guide there, started doing it after he retired. In the summer he's doing that 3-4 days a week, and he always shares so many nice pictures. Very fun job imo.
They didn't mention it but there is a folkmuseum in Volendam, which was the highligh of my daytrip there (and it's free with museumkaart). Definitely worth it for anyone who is interested in Dutch culture and/or folk clothing. When it comes to catstles my favourites are Sypestijn, Oud Zuylen and Cannenburg.
a lot of popular dutch singers that where popular when I was a kid where from Volendam. there is also a dutch song where they sing: want in ieder huis van volendam daar woont een muziekant. wich translates to: in every hous of volendam there lives a singer
Here we go again. (Sigh...)
It's such a shame that this video (and a lot of others) are mainly about the western part of the Netherlands. Beautiful but there are lovely cities and towns in the rest of the country. E g. Groningen, Leeuwarden, Nijmegen, Den Bosch, Breda. These cities are (not only from a tourism perspective) also very interesting. 🙄😊
Let those tourists stay in the west please! We don't need more tourists here in Groningen, it's fine as it is now ;)
This video in itself is very misleading, instead of hidden gems it is a list of very famously known locations flooded with tourists already.
Or just avoid cities for once and Visit small towns in Zeeland where you can still see the scars of the Floods in 1953, where you can breath fresh air coming from the sea and where you can enjoy the beautiful and unique landscape of this province.
Precies, dit is een randstad promotie filmpje. Wat Den Haag en Rotterdam hier in doen, echt er zijn zoveel mooiere steden dorpen in Nederland dan die 2.
Hey how nice, this is where I live 🥰
Always nice at the harbour with the boats and friendly tourists. For me the most beautiful musical village in the Netherlands 🇳🇱🙋🏼♀️😘
Thank you my friend very nice that was interesting ℹ️
Den Bosch, Dordrecht, Gorinchem, Middelburg, Veere, Bergen op Zoom... so many other beautiful cities that are worth a visit.
Here are my top 3 favorite European countries as an Asian 1) Germany 2) The Netherlands 3) Italy. Beautiful people, Beautiful culture, Beautiful history, Beautiful architecture, Beautiful landscapes, clean etc
Pffff! born and raised in Amsterdam (and still living and loving it there!) but there are so much more beautiful places to discover in the Netherlands! it’s such a small country, take a train, bike or bus and discover more then just the western part, you’ll be surprised!
The Netherlands has a lot of beautiful places. In my opinion those do not include Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
🤔 Amsterdam has the biggest old-town in Europe, full of architecture from 400 years ago.
The northern renaissance took place in the Netherlands and formed the base of today Netherlands and is appreciated and known for it's beauty all around the world by art historians.
Amsterdam zeker wel, maar dat is wel bekend, maar Rotterdam???? Den Haag????
I was born and raised in the ‘Randstad’, acknowledge that the eastern and southern part of the Netherlands were fully ignored but to be completely honest, besides the ‘Hoge Veluwe’ I also can’t name a memorable place in those areas.
Thanks for untangling your headphones cord
You can get an allowance for old properties if you can live in it to stimulate people to take care of it. There are also restrictions for upgrading/improving the property to preserve the looks of the property.
They definitely assign monument status to certain buildings. But a lot of old houses were also build to last ;)
I recommend going up north and rent a car or a bicycle. So many small town that are still pure charm. Years back a m8 and i got lost there by car and even found small villages that did not have a official name (like 1 store 1 cafe and 8 farm houses clusterd close to each other in the middle of nowhere)
As a Dutchman living in the Philippines, this video makes me a bit homesick …
I want to add another response to this video:
The reason is that I see a lot of Dutch people replying with "tourist traps"
In my opinion they aren't traps, genuine interesting places to visit, however they are crowded with tourists and therefore not hidden gems and also why us Dutchies don't go there.
Tourist traps are places that make you pay for things that are actualy free, its places that create fake things to lure tourists and exploit them, these places are not that.
Deventer ❤
Love giethoorn. Still beautyfull
a lot is being bought up by Chinese, there is now a group of Chinese investors who are buying up real estate in Giethoorn. These investors recently purchased a tour company, but also a bicycle rental company, a taxi company, a boat rental company and an old hair salon that will serve as a souvenir shop.
You don't want to be there high-season though. You can practically walk from boat to boat as they try to move through the canals pretty much side to side and bow to stern.
As a Dutchman I have never been there and will avoid it the rest of my life
Dordrecht should be on there too
Volendam must be the most overrated place in the Netherlands. Just north of it is Edam, which is 1. prettier, 2. less crowded by tourism and 3. not overflown by giftshops in every street.
If you want to learn Japanese, go there during Japanese holydays 😄
@@picobyte Made me laugh, this sounds so ridiculous but yes.. it is true haha
Edam never had Cats.
That's probably why.
I live in rural Oost Groningen.
Nearest train station is ten km per bicycle, and an 25min bus ride away from here.
That's why I'm very pleased with my small petrol powered car 🙂
Now that you mention Oost Groningen:
A very nice place to visit in that province is Bourtange, a small village within a late 16th century star-fortress (with some more village outside the fortress)
Since it's pretty much off the beaten track for foreign tourists, you'll mostly find Dutch and German tourists there.
@@mrflappie6553 Bourtange is almost 100% new build as the original fortress was as good as gone.
@@picobyte I didn't know this. But yes, apparently it got rebuild in the 70s and 80s but to the state it used to be in the 18th century.
Still it's a good way to see how life could have been back then.
@mrflappie6553 True great effords went in reproducing.
The title is wrong.
I would be thrilled if tourists look past Amsterdam and actually visit the rest of the country too.
Just a bunch of tourist folders glued together.
At 5:55 you see these nice flower fields. Let me tell you that these fields are the most toxic in the country. These fields are covered with pesticides. If you live next to them, your chance of getting cancer is raised severely. Most toxic fields are Lilies.
Het maakt eigenlijk niet zoveel uit, zolang ze maar niet naar Amersfoort, Baarn, Hollandsche Rading of de Lage Vuursche en dergelijke beschermde gebieden gaan. Dan blijft het goed.
Sigh, here we go again. This video consists of places which are 100% tourist attractions, though my favorite from this video definitely is Volendam. I love going there every now and then
both eindhoven, utrecht and groningen should be in that list
Well if you follow this, you want to be standing in row with all the japanese and chinese tourists, and if you you only have a week to spend go ahead.
If you want to know the netherlands there are dozens of beautifull towns to visit without standing in line. Gouda Haarlem Groningen Middelburg Naarden Veere Dordrecht ETC ETC
What the hell is this video, why are there 2-3 songs playing in the background simultaneously? It's driving me crazy watching this haha. Regarding the contents, these are all nice destinations but definitely not 'hidden gems'. Giethoorn a best kept secret? Giethoorn is literally overflowing with tourists, so much so that it's driving the residents nuts, and they want to do something about it. Delft is really lovely, it is probably my favourite Dutch city together with Leiden. Cities like Leiden, Dordrecht, Leeuwarden, Groningen fit the term 'hidden gem' much better, way less tourists there.
Unknown cities of the Netherlands: Rotterdam, The Hauge and Utrecht.. Well those aren't really unknown. There are better / lesser known cities: Amersfoort, Leiden, etc.
These are all tourist traps... Most of them I never even visited as a Dutchman.
It's funny how the most beautiful places are never shown. Only the Germans seem to know that Zeeland is the best. During the summer, Zeeland gets flooded with Germans and Belgians enjoying their holidays at the beaches.
You asked for the best sea food? Zeeland ( Sealand) is where you need to be.
We dont go there because its too crowded, still not tourist traps though, they are genuinely interesting. Mass tourism does make them less interesting to us.
Google giethoorn and toeriste lol
They don't want to know about? Half of them are pretty much tourist traps. As for your question we did the same thing in the 70 and 80 isch we lost a lot of nice buildings nowadays we take care of them and re use the old buildings a lot of churches have turned into appartments for example. Not ideal but at least the building is preserved. Also a lot has been rebuild where it could be done.
i would skip the hague not the best city in the netherlands, Den Bosch or Breda are much prettier and there is about a couple of dozen smaller towns that are worth visiting. Also if you like themeparks then Efteling is a must (Thats themeparks not high thrill amusement parks).
1) Haarlem, not a tourist trap.
2) Zaandam, not a tourist trap. (Zaanse schans, yes, but he said "Zaandam")
3) Maastricht, not a tourist trap.
4) Volendam, yes tourist trap.
5) Marken, indecisive, for sure not as much as Volendam.
6) Lisse, not a tourist trap, (if you only go to "De Keukenhof" yeah it is, but still for foreigners a very unique one)
7) Rotterdam, not a tourist trap
8) Delft, maybe, but certainly not the whole city.
9) Giethoorn, yes it's a tourist trap
10) Utrecht, not a tourist trap.
11) Den Hague, not a tourist trap.
So we got 2 out 11 tourist traps
@@adpop750 You get that these are still none of them 'best kept secrets' or 'hidden gems' right?
I would also agree they are not tourist traps, tourist traps are actualy fake baits, the location are interesting and genuine.. they are however flooded with tourists already.
Sadly only Giethoorn and Maastricht are mentions that are outside of the west, add Utrecht and the rest is even only in the Holland region.
if you dont like architechture and art you shouldnt go to the netherlands. we barely have any nature and they are just building more and more flats everywhere
Rotterdammmmmm
Sorry, Utrecht, Den Haag are borring! There are a lot places better than this. Maastricht one off the beautifulst city's in Europe, Groningen is a noce city. Little places, als Diepenheim, Enkhuizen, Bronkhorst are nice trips, smal butt nive. Go to een city Zutphen Deventer, Middelburg Sta away off city's Rotterdam, Den Haag, Utrecht and Eindhoven, the are so borring!
meh, if you want Rotterdam without the piss smell and chance of getting mugged/stabbed, visit Delft instead.
same kind of classic architecture, much better vibes.
I lived in Rotterdam city center for 15 years, I've never witnessed any muggings or stabbings and I never heard of anyone being mugged or stabbed. The piss smell is true though, but only if you take the elevators at the metro stations.
