The song was written based on graffiti written on the wall of Celtics Stadium in Scotland. I’m 60 years old. As a woman who has studied irish history my whole life, I can honestly say when my son was born in August 94 and the cease fire was agreed on the 31st I was so happy. My son was thought this in history in school but not enough. I brought him to Killmainham to see the cells and Breakers yard were the men were executed. I walked him all around Dublin to see all the bullet holes that are still here today. The British Empire invaded so many countries it’s ridiculous. So many anthems are written about fighting off the British. Scotland, Wales, Ireland 🇮🇪 America etc etc. I remember the bombs going off in Dublin City centre. My aunt brought me into Easons came out and the first bomb exploded. My aunt grabbed me and we ran home. I remember watching Bloody Sunday on the news. First time I seen my father cry. Irish ballads are a great sing along but it doesn’t mean any Irish person singing them wants war. Not troubles it was a war. Just like the “ famine “ was genocide. We have the right to remember our history and to learn from it. Love your open minded interesting way of discussing times gone by. I really enjoyed every minute.
The song has absolutely nothing to do with the WOI, or 1916, or the Irish civil war or the troubles in the north, people read far too much into the song and consequently miss the whole point of the song DB was trying to make about life in inner city Dublin in the late 1920's which is such a shame as you all completely miss a very important part of Irish social history from 1928 to 1936.
Celtic Symphony was written to celebrate the centenary of Celtic football club The club was formed by Brother Walfrid (Andrew Kerrins) from county Sligo to raise funds for soup kitchens.Glasgow was a major centre of Irish immigration during the famine . Scotland was a very Presbyterian country and the Irish Catholic immigrants were looked down upon Celtic had a lot of success and became a source of pride for the Irish community in Glasgow. The big rivals are Glasgow Rangers who have very strong links with the Ulster Unionists. Celtic the club and supporters still still hold on their Irish roots .During the troubles the Celtic fans often expressed their support for Provos singing rebel songs .They still do . Celtic fans refer to Celtic Park as Paradise ,Before it was redeveloped into an all seater stadium .The Jungle refers to the part of the ground where the most passionate of the Celtic support congregated .The Lion refers to the Lisbon Lions the famous Celtic side that were the first northern European side to win the European cup Champions League in 1967
Thank you very much for the full background of the song. Very interesting to hear. Nice to learn something new any day. I’m delighted to have seen your comment 👍
The Troubles never needed to happen. All that needed to happen was Britain returning Northern Ireland to its rightful owners as they had done with numerous other countries. And yes, those from Northern Ireland see themselves as British. Their great-great-great grandparents did. The partition was purposeful in ensuring that the majority of those living in Northern Ireland already wanted to be united with Britain, the Unionists. Doesn't change the fact that Northern Ireland rightfully belongs to Ireland.
And what do you suppose would have happened if, in the 1960s let's say, the UK (or Britain I guess) had just unilaterally announced that it was ceding Northern Ireland to Ireland? Do you not think that there might have been a Troubles, but in reverse? Adding almost 25% to Ireland's population overnight, the vast majority reluctantly and angrily, and giving them the vote and the right to stand for election might cause some issues no?
@@for111 nah not riling anyone up just we are still colonised would you bot agree? Were one of the very few countries in the world still but if we arent what is the north?

I’m British born of Irish parents. I grew up in northern England during 1960/70’s listening to the album Irish Rebel Songs at the time the IRA were bombing England.
This is so close to my heart, I'm from cork in ireland, my grandmothers baby sister was nearly taken by the black and tans, she was two years of age, a baby all because their front door wasn't shut in time because the Irish were not allowed out after a certain time, my grandmother witnessed as a child her pregnant neighbour and little girl running home because they were late and they were shot dead, this runs so deep with Irish people, it was an absolute disgrace what was done to our families 🍀 to the Irish people 💔
Just a side note on the line on the Zulus fighting with spears, there was large amounts of the Zulu nation that fought with rifles also.. no justifying the war just something to note on the lyrics, and the Zulus won many resounding victories in the war showing it wasn’t as clean cut as people may make out.. again not condoning anything about it just trying to add some context
This a classic case of the blind leading the blind! I think you all need an Irish history lesson, what a load of waffle. The song is nothing to do with "the troubles" or the WOI, or the Easter Rising or any rebellion its not even about the real Black and Tans, look at the lyrics in the first verse ffs, what are you all waffling on about? And Michael Collins the movie was 80% complete rubbish and filled with events that never actually happened so if you are getting your Irish history from that then lord help us all.

@@COUNTYGAINS Michael Collins to many of us was a traitor to his country and if you knew all about the song you would know that Stephen Behan who was the composers father ( and "me da" in the song) was jailed by Micheal Collins's Irish Free Staters the same Free Staters who executed far more brave Irish Republicans than the Brits did in 1916 and spat on the the Proclamation our brave Irish republican men and women died for. So he may be a hero to you but he's a traitor to many of us including the writer of come out ye Black and Tans, Dominic Behan, his father, his mother and his two brothers all of whom were anti treaty, what do you think all the fuss in the North has been about over the past 100 years.
Shouldn’t be controversial. It is a song written about the 1916 rising where young Irish men formed a movement to get the English out of Ireland. Justifiably so if you look at the atrocities ,injustice and abuse Ireland suffered under British rule. We write songs to record our history and this song is a representation of a time in Irish history. It does not refer to The troubles in the North in the seventies and eighties or to the IRA of that time. They are two separate eras and not to be confused. Saying that it is not appropriate to sing a song written to record our history is revisionist at its worst and absolutely ridiculous. You can’t rewrite history nor should you try. Great well informed reaction by the way!
I can tell you this is never taught in UKnschoolscas rge UK tend to ignore crimes committed bgbtheir troops so being of Itish descent I had to research it muself whicjnwas difficult as this was years before the Internet was available.
