    The symbolism of Odysseus killing his past self so he can become the monster is a really nice detail.

    This animatic has given me the new headcannon that when odysseus gets the vision of being stabbed during the troy saga, its actually his future self abandoning who he once was, and effectively “killing” his past self.

  • @Zephirite.

    Ooh, the fact that Ody not only kills the version of himself who hesitated, but MASSACRES him, reveals a self-hatred that underscores his anger so beautifully. Lovely lighting and scratchy lines, too--coupled with the ferocity of his expressions, it sells the brutality of this song so well!

  • @gramps3351
    @gramps3351 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +587

    I love the way Odysseus had to actively engage with Polyphemus and Circe but when it was Poseidon all Poseidon needed was proof that Odysseus was now at a point where he was *willing* to stand and fight rather than run away
    And the way Poseidon almost seemed bothered by the fact that Odysseus didn't run was really interesting too, like at least for that moment Poseidon was like "This isn't fun anymore i'll come back when you've gone through some stuff", its a really interesting characterization!

    • @Tioko
      @Tioko 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      To be fair, this is all in Odysseus’s head. I don’t think the actual Poseidon would care.

    • @carpedm9846
      @carpedm9846 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +64

      Also I think it shows a "fixed" version of his blunder with poseidon.
      After poseidon spends the whole song berating him for being too naive and kind, his apology is "sorry we shouldve been nicer we didnt mean to hurt him", essentially refuting the central theme of his song, then he calls him naive and kills his crew.
      And here, he goes "yeah I shouldve gutted him so he couldnt rat me out." To which poseidon presumably goes "ah shit I GUESS you learned your lesson and I dont have an excuse anymore..."

    • @rochichan
      @rochichan  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +134

      i really love this interpretation of that moment! tbh i was very back and forth about how Poseidon should react to Odysseus pointing his sword back at him.
      For my initial brain-storming sequence of Polyphemus, Circe, and Poseidon, I wrote in my notes: “as [Ody] is going through the multiple scenarios in his head, show the person and odysseus matching and following [each person’s] motions as if a reflection/mirror. this is meant to serve as a parallel with all the people he has met (their actions versus his actions)”
      By Odysseus pointing his sword at Poseidon, it shows he still defies him, not completely respects him, which contradicts the lyric, “Or does he keep us in check so we must respect him
      And now no one dares to piss him off?”
      Poseidon reacted with a mix of surprise + “acceptance” - surprised that Odysseus is still unafraid of him, and acknowledging that Odysseus is changing his ways
      (sorry long ramble but i was curious what ppl would think about the poseidon bit and i saw ur comment about it first!)

    • @m0thernature730
      @m0thernature730 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      To me it’s like “I see now” i understand what I did wrong I didn’t finish the job, I’ll be sure to correct the mistake next time we meet” like I’m not scared anymore.
      As in ruthlessness he sings “what have you done?” In such a shocked and dismayed tone like he couldn’t believe someone could be so heartless… but now he looks at the god and he understands… he understands the only way monsters can understand. Teeth bared and ready to fight. And so Poseidon looks at him and says “till next we meet.”
      That’s my interpretation an understanding that next time they meet it won’t just be a “lesson” Odysseus will either die or Poseidon will see the monster in Odysseus and let him live.

    • @kertagin1
      @kertagin1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@m0thernature730 the Greek gods were not so nice as to just kill you. if your dumb enough to defy them they make it a point to make you wish you were dead. the Odyssey happened because Odysseus accidently offended one of the gods (Poseidon If I remember right), as such they made what was supposed to be a month or two voyage into the extended hell march. if it was Poseidon maiming his son was just the extra icing on the cake for him to make the ordeal drag out longer. only zeuses eventual intervention allowed Odysseus to eventually get home.

    I love how you make this right after No Longer You and Tiresias is ‘watching’ first hand what his prophecy is immediately doing. The symbolism of Odysseus killing his past self just to drop the infant with no remorse, that is the prophecy. It’s not the Odysseus we’ve known anymore.

  • @Efulums
    @Efulums 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +47

    Oof, I really love the interpretation of Odysseus killing his past self, and the way he does it, too-his expression as he does so. Almost as if he's saying to his past merciful self that it's *your* fault we're not yet home, that I'm still not able to see Penelope and Telemachus; if you had just been less soft, if you had just been more ruthless from the start, this could all be over. It's *your* fault, and you're in my way.
    It's a slightly different take than I've seen other people do, which is this ruthlessness is within him but is something he has to accept (as if it's not the main aspect of him but just another part), but this almost suggests that it was always Odysseus' base nature, and other parts of him layered on top of that foundation stopped him from being that-and he needs to strip those layers of humanity away.
    Absolutely wonderful animatic. Your art and work are amazing, and I am in awe. I love this so much! 🤩💜

    I just love how the infant basically detonates when he drops it. I'm sure there's some symbolism of his decision just wiping out his past way of thinking, but on top of that it's just an incredibly good looking transition out of the vision.

    3:00 whenever I listen to this song I ALWAYS do a move similar to this one. It really captures that craziness that he gets here, almost as if he's enjoying it. But then he falls down, and you see that deep regret in his eyes. Like 'what am I doing...." He doesn't want to become this but he knows theres no other choice. The way Tiresias stares back down at him is so chilling as well. Almost as if he's saying 'I told you so' but in a darker way.
    Also the ending? PERFECT. It’s the exact emotion I imagine. He looks like he’s completely lost himself, blinded by one thought. Ruthlessness. He truly has become the monster and you’ve visualized this piece beautifully. Well done my friend, well done!👏👏👏

    3:00 this is probably my favorite part in detail of this animatic Odyssey when he says “ what if I’m the monster?” Look like he’s genuinely asking himself and I’d imagine himself using a insane chuckle like you would hear the come out of the mouth of the Joker or something but then immediately putting his head down and looking concerned as he gazes at his hands right after he just dropped the infant probably asking himself “ what did I just do? “ it really adds to the whole idea of this is the moment where his mental compass and morality shadows into pieces as he just wants to go home bravo ❤

    God, watching this was LITERALLY breathtaking. It was legit hard to breathe watching this. The intensity baked into every movement, the cinematography/camera movements themselves, the way we move from scene to scene. None of it feels out of place and all of it is devastating. I especially love the detail of Odysseus threatening Poseidon with his sword, only for Poseidon to drop his threatening stance. He’s learned his lesson. That and the sequence of Odysseus singing the chorus to Tiresias. Other people typically portray him as speaking to the void, of that final chorus being his moment of decision and conviction, but in this he already made his choice when he began to attack his younger self. Him talking to Tiresias has both the emotions of determination as well as the less seen ones of him fucking BREAKING DOWN. Never have I felt so… sad, watching an Odysseus commit to being the monster before. It’s brilliantly done.

    this is beautiful. i love how you showed the progression of Odysseus’s madness and insanity, killing his old self so he can truly become the monster and get back home

    Your animatic of Horse and the Infant and Just a Man are my favourites so the part where Odysseus confronts himself was almost like a callback and was so good

    The symbolism and how Odysseus plays in his head what he should have done in each situation is PERFECTION. In my interpretation, Odysseus is basically blaming that part of him that felt remorse killing the infant because it seemed to unlock more guilt in him that drove a lot of his mindset along of mercy along with Polites.

    Bloody hell hands down the best monster animatic so far and by a long shot

    This is why I am looking at more than the most popular animatics, to find gems like these. Very little animation in this one, but the execution is better than any other I have seen! That smile is exactly what I was looking to find. That loss of sanity. Only one other animator so far has done that. Saying it in the face of the profit, fulfilling his prophecy right before him was beautiful! In the animation I drafted in my head, Odysseus only published his past self away to grab the infant. Now I think I will have him throw himself off the wall first then drop the infant. You have earned the spot in my playlist and I hope many others.

    THIS IS INSANE I LOVE IT

    listen the shift in his eyes, where there was light in the pupils and it turns to nothing but dark in his eyes was an AMAZING touch.

    This RULES!! Not only following and revisiting dropping Scamnderus off the wall in the past but doing it AGAIN as a reaffirmation, and the little hand clench at “ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves” and then attack the past version viciously and in quick succession!!! I love that the past version didn’t just bleed out, or disappear into smoke; that Odysseus attacked and then KEPT attacking after the past version was down to reappear and affirm in front of Tiresias that he would become a different man and do monstrous things… also love the slightly manic expression, the incredulity you conveyed at, “so what if I’m the monster?!” that faded into grim determination at the end. Also the transition to getting the ship ready to sail was very cool! Thanks so much for making and posting this animatic!
