Odysseus from Just A Man killing himself is a twist I haven't seen yet. Ive seen the reverse of Odysseus killing his past self, but I like the implivation here that he was the monster before and had what it takes, so he's returing to that mindset.
It makes more sense. Inside he knew he was a monster but he thought he could stop to be one as he was going back home only to find out that his war is not over and ge and his men still needed the monster.
A lot of people (including Jorge I think) have said EPIC is a story about a man learning to be ruthless, but yeah I find that hard to accept when it opens with Odysseus killing an infant in the very first story beat. It's more him coming to terms with what he's willing to do to survive/see his family again.
The fact that it is himself from TROY and not his "current self" to be the one to "kill" the "good" in him is so good!!! As that's when he considers himself "most monsterous".
when does a man becomes a monster A - 10 years of war? B - losing your best friend C - losing most of your men (from 600 to 43) D - all of the above and more
I love the symbolism of him throwing himself over balcony. While the music hits drop another infant from a wall. To symbolize that he's killing another innocent here killing his own in a sense
"Sooooo did the prophet tell ya something about how we can get home?" "We will kill everything that breaths in our proximity from now on." "Oh, I mean he is the prophet, he will know, you heard the captain guys!"

There’s another well known channel who has been doing animatics for quite some time, they also just did Monster quite recently. In their interpretation they portrayed the same scene of Odysseus watching how his past self threw Hector’s baby. But the difference is that Odysseus kills that past self and once again throws the baby, embracing the monster that he needs to be. In this version it’s more like the past self reprimands the pacifist Odysseus that made them lose everything they had. And instead kills the weak one, in order to not lose what he still has waiting for him. Still becoming a monster but not entirely embracing it, it’s more like killing a part of himself in order to be the monster. I’ve been binging all the animatics I can and it’s amazing how the differences of how people imagine these scenes can change a lot of the nuance and symbolism. If this becomes a musical on a stage I would love to see which interpretation they choose for all major events.
I saw another very cool where old Odysseus is about to throw the baby and then it turns into a dark shadow offering his hand (where the baby was before) and old Odysseus watch the figure and stroke his hand and absorb it inside him. I think is another cool interpretation.
Hoooooly crap, the symbolism of him throwing away his gentleness, of him shifting between the "monster" and the "man", it's so good! I loved this! You earned a new subscriber!
I loved the transiton from the blue of the Underworld to the oranges and red of Troy burning right before he goes up the stairs. To me it really hammered home that a part of Odysseus really did die and that soul is staying in the Underworld where it belongs.
I love that the Ody we follow in the starts gets tossed off the wall, and the 'monster' - the one who threw the baby takes over! A man returns home, but it's no longer him!
Wow! Odysseus practically killing his kindness by throwing it's impersonation into the flames is an awesome interpretation! And that he is not talking to himself rather than the "monster" is talking to "kindness" beforehand. I love it so much!!
Omg having Odysseus’s old self kill his new self is such genius because one major challenge of EPIC’s themes and main character arc is that fact that the general in war, Odysseus, is certainly not naive or soft, and this choice (especially the choice of representing it with his helmet) layers the meaning that he was separating his ruthless actions as choices made by a soldier and so when the war is over he goes back to kindness lest he becomes a monster, and this song then marks his decision to be that ruthless soldier all the time, to kill and sacrifice even not in war, even if that makes him a monster
This song is one of my favorites of the entire musical, and your portrayal of it is absolutely stunning. His past self killing his present weakness is genius. It's like he's telling his present self "I dropped an infant from a wall to be with my wife and you won't even kill an actual monster that killed your best friend and your men? Pathetic. Let me take over."
I love the context in this for the “To everyone one but us” line because instead of being aimed a the crew, he really just means everyone but myself, which as we later see, is what it really meant
2:42 I absolutely love this transition and basically it’s Trojan Odysseus’s ruthlessness overtaking his mindset!! This is honestly my favorite animatic of Monster!! 😊
Odysseus's journey is more than about reaching Ithaca. It's about his personal growth and transformation. It's a journey which tests his resilence, humility, wit and patience. The Odyssey is so famous till this date because it is rooted on the real life problems of human life which we need to face someday. Odysseus not only accomplished his goal at the end which is reaching to Ithaca but what type of a person he grew into on that journey. It's never about the destination but the journey. We all must learn from The Odyssey it teaches us valuable lessons on life.
I have to say I'm honestly so glad for Epic: the musical's existence, because we get to experience art pieces and animations from so many different artists and their perspective and spin on the story.
What I really like about this animatic is, unlike other animatics, the scenes are directed in a way that you might see in an actual animated movie or tv show. A lot of other animatics don't get this right
i watched literally all of your EPIC animatics yesterday and i got so excited when i saw this!!!!! i don't normally comment on anything, but you have such a beautiful art style and the expressions of everyone and the way you had soldier odysseus throw other ody off the balcony i was dying inside, THIS WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WAIT WAIT WAIT I JUST SAW THIS AFTER MUTINY, HOW THE HELL DID YOU MAKE THIS SO COOL?? HOLY COW I GOT CHILLS WHEN I SAW TROY ODYSSEUS AND I was like "no way, NO WAY he's gonna throw him out the tower" BUT HE DOES ITS AMAZING I HAD TO PAUSE IT RIGHT AFTER TO CALM MY HEART AND COMMENT DOWN HERE. Bro you made me get literal CHILLS. What a MONSTROUS animator you are!
It's ironic that in this song, Odysseus ponders whether becoming the monster would help him and his crew get home and becoming the monster to everyone else but his crew. And the we have the thunder saga...
Absolutely amazing! I love the careful use of colors depending on the scene and oh my gosh Circe's is stunning and Poseidon look epic! Cyclops scene was definitely filled with the level of brutality you'd imagine but lord did it it harder when you get to see the Polities last moments. Odysseus literally fighting himself over what he has to become to make it home with him as he is now and him when he dropped the infant off the wall felt like such a good portrayal of his internal conflict. This is one of my favorite songs and this just feels like such a beautiful representation of it! Amazing job!
I just got into Epic last week but I have been listening to it non stop. I NEED MORE PEOPLE TO SEE THIS! I have seen many other great Monster animatics but this is the first one where I actually got chills
I LOVED THIS SO MUCH. When "just a man" odysseus took over singing it absolutely killed me. Everything from that to the end was just PERFECT. I love how it's this quiet moment of Odysseus reflecting to himself, but it was still so dynamic with all the flashbacks, and the way you depicted him flipping back and forth between his present and past selves while walking to the boat? Just flawless, absolutely flawless
Very well done!!! What a beautiful animatic❤ I also love a lot Circe's and Poseidon's designs and the Exchange between Odysseus and himself as a soldier... Chef kiss✨😊
Also, what a brillant idea making the lyric "oh ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves" as the intro of Monster Odysseus into the song and "I lost my best friend..." the start of a conversation between Odysseuses (Odysseui?). It's a wonderfully take and compliments the change in the music so well. - two different musical deliveries (lyrical to almost rapping), two different men. So creative. Bravo
Amazingly done 1:50 I love this part right here specifically, can’t put it to words properly but between the line in the song and the shot in the animatic I just really like it
Dude!! the choices you made for the frames in this one?? popped off. fr fr. Having the grimly determined version him masked up, fighting and killing his remorseful side? Inspired. Making penelope pink for a moment, contrasting the cool colors weve been seeing so far? ver effective. 0:58? dear god way to put an emphasis on 558 men, yikes. 1:12, was not prepared for that BIG OOF. Also, love your cyclops design, its giving very scary baby. This frame 1:28? beautiful lighting. Also, loved that you actually showed the fire, forces the audience to feel the full weight of killing a baby. This frame???? 2:15 beautiful, honorable mention. Having the monstrous version of Ody and the current version in the same spot as you switch frames ( 2:47 and 3:22) was very effective, delighted you made that choice
The shift in perspective was done remarkably well. Watching a confused self-doubting Odysseus venture through his memories was a great way to show him reflect on what makes a monster. And shifting perspective from that doubtful version of him, to the murderous monster, and then to the true Odysseus was fantastic.
I think this animation is the best one because it shows how Monster Ody kills the Man Ody and the flashback to the one and only time he had become a Monster before is soooo good
Your the only animator/artist I've seen so far to actually show the deaths of Polites and The Infant and if it weren't for the fact that I'm already subscribed I would of subscribed, I love your art style!
I love the arguement with himself and how the ruthless version threw the passifist version of him off the balcony. Wonderful transition, gave me goosebumps. I listen to this song with a whole new scene playing in my head and it's... EPIC
1:31 idk why but I just really like how Poseidon is depicted grabbing the water. Poseidon is the god of the sea so it only makes sense for him to be able to manipulate water with such ease. This is so much more creative than moving water via some invisible force
All of these different animatics are just so awesome. And the way this one was, I’ll say, directed, is one I would definitely want to see fully animated and/or acted out! Would be so cool.
There was no reason you had to go out there and make one of the best Epic Animatics, but here we go. Just the creative ideas and symbolism just elevate this piece. I also just got to say you make me absolutely wince at 1:12 like ouch it makes Polites' death feel so painful. Another big compliment I have to give is that it feels like you aren't shaking the screen as much as in previous animatics, I really appreciate that.
I hope that you do all the songs, can`t wait to see more. Love the colors to, absolutely stunning ❤And the "fight" with monster Odysseus near the end 😮OMG. You can see the determination on his face.
Yo, that symbolism of Odysseus' past/more war-time self literally 'killing' his present self is one of the most imaginative takes on the song I've seen, that's good stuff! Really solid throughout too, with the pacing and imagery.
I love his past pushing his current self off the wall because it makes sense. He started out like that cause that is how athena taught him but after polites death you can see him change to become softer to keep his friend alive so now he is coming back to being a monster
I abaolutly LOVE the twist that his soldier self throws his kinder self over the edge and symbolizes that the soldier that would do anything to get home is back!
After getting into EPIC and watching countless animatics, your style is my favourite 👌🏿 It gives graphic novel/storybook/ animated movie, I find it to be really unique and detailed. Great job!!!

Well, shoot. Not I am torn. I love your depiction of this. So, so much. But for my playlist, there can only be one, and I have seen another that rivals yours closely in my heart. This will be a painful decision.
What kinda sucks is how following Polites' ideology of "greeting the world with open arms" basically got all his men and his mother killed. Along with losing Athena as his mentor.
I know that's not true for Epic's version but Monster has some grim comedy to it when you keep in mind that, the original Odysseus had the idea to throw Astyanax off the wall all by himself (and then Neptolemus used the b0dy as a human shield/weapon but let's not talk about THAT)

HOW DARE YOU MAKE ALL THE VILLAINS LOOK SO COOL!! The Cyclops scene was brutal, Circe was utterly stunning and Poseidon was just awesome.
All Greek gods were handsome, except Hephaestus.
I don't want to admit but...Poseidon in here is just...argh...
