I did twenty-nine years in the US Merchant Marine and have been to well over forty countries around the world, but I really enjoyed my last year sailing which was on a chemical tanker running up and down in the Gulf and East Coasts. This video brought back some good memories. Thanks Joe, Ram

Back in the early 70s the world was a different place compared to now when we went to Tallinn it was the CCCP back then,when we finally got in it was a culture shock, everyone wearing grey or dark clothes,we were asked iff we wanted to sellour clothes,well the currency was the rouble and worthless. To see all the shops empty was a big wtf is this place. Soldiers guarding the gangway 24/7. One of a thousand tales I could tell you of my life at sea. Love your videos Joe. Being at sea is special. It's a life I would do all over again in a heartbeat. I was 17 when I walked onto my first ship,you certainly learn to grow up fast. Good luck in all the great adventures you will have.

Did it for over 30 years starting out sweet water sailor on the Great Lakes. first job was two weeks relief on the Edmund Fitzgerald. working in the galley. afterwhile went saltwater with the national Maritime Union. mainly work on ships. Supporting the troops in Vietnam.working as Junior engineer and deck engine mechanic .worked on ships going all over Latin America Africa. really enjoyed traveling around the world. Some great memories . Truly miss it and good sailing to you
I used to fish on a commercial vessel with my grandpa when I was a kid and these videos really make me nostalgic for the sea and those good times, loving the content man, hopefully adventure more to come! 👍
Enjoying your videos. My cousin spent his whole civilian flying career flying helicopters in the loop. His base was Patterson , LA. I spent my whole career as a long haul cargo pilot. I have places stamped in my passport(s) that most people can't find on a globe. As your Mariner career progresses it will be the same for you. I enjoyed international travel.
I have only been offshore day fishing. I live in north Mississippi and only have lakes around me. I love watching these videos and it’s awesome to see the knowledge you have learned. From the first video and nothing nothing to videos such as this one shows your continuous improvement not only in your job but in yourself. Keep that up man it’s working. Don’t be average.
I wish I'd have thought of doing this as a career years ago. Almost 59 now and in a dead-end school bus driving job making peanuts for pay. I just thought for many years that this was a dying industry and there'd be no demand for civilian mariners. Glad to see guys like Joe having this wonderful opportunity.

don't know if you're still on this boat(Overseas Anacortes), but she was in the port of Tampa at the marathon plant a few days ago. I was working in the shipyard next door as an outside machinist. Also extremely cool to see the inside operations of what just looked like any ol ship in the port and precisely what the ship does and where it goes. Love it

As an old retired sea salt, I really enjoy your videos! I sailed mostly steward's department, seen the world and loved it. Unfortunately N.M.U. went under and I was out of a job, I was devastated, if I had then known about SIU, I could've joined that union which is still going strong these days! It is when I see your beautiful and well made videos that I feel happy seeing everything I lived on those vessels. Keep up the good work. Stay safe!
Nice to read you’re a die hard seaman! You enjoyed your job at sea in times of peace, so embrace these memories: WWII was a horrible period for the Merchant Navy and its people in general, with the continuous threat of the presence of U-boats... for instance. When sailing in convoy, being struck often meant the end for the crew: not a single ship in the convoy was allowed to reduce speed or to stop, this was too dangerous for she could be the next target/victim... let alone the rest of the most of time unarmed ships. My opinion is that there’s not enough appreciation for the important task of the Merchant Navy in WWII, even nowadays people in general have the “out of sight, out of heart” attitude. A pity, cuz 90% of their stuff comes from overseas. That’s why channels like this one are really important! 👍🏻⚓️🙋🏼♀️

I joined the British Merchant Navy at 16 in 1966 sailing for the first trip at just 17.I stayed at sea for 10 years and sometimes wish I`d stayed longer.I really enjoy your posts,they bring back a lot of memories.
Your videos randomly showed up on my TH-cam today at like 4:00 in the morning on Sat August 30th in the Inland Empire in California. I'm so grateful they showed up randomly, you have no idea. Your videos are a life saying or a godsend whatever the phrase is. I would love to do something like this. This could really change my life. I'm tired of working bullshit jobs. I want to work somewhere where it's worthwhile and has some adventure to it and get away from the bullshit that's in my life. And it's bullshit that I don't cause myself for the most part. I'm always trying to put out other people's fires and I'm tired of living that way. But doing this, what you're doing, it looks like a life that I would love. I've always lived on the move anyway. Why not become a sailor make some money and sail the world.

Years ago we did the loop to loop for many months to carry Alaska crude from Chiriqui grande (Panama -Atlantic side)to the lousyana loop. Didn’t touch land for months! Wonderful vlog joe…for a deckie (ex engineer)

Love the content. Found your page when I was doing some research on becoming an Merchant Marine. I spent 4 year’s in the Navy on an aircraft carrier then 15 years in the Army has an Infantryman. The last 4 year’s since retiring I’ve had my CDL and became a trucker. It’s awesome being able to drive all over the country. When you went to piney point was anyone in your class over 40? Been thinking about going to be a MM but didn’t know if they had an age limit cut off! Love your videos on the ship and RV. That’s one reason I want to become A MM so I can travel around the country in a little RV. Stop at the places a Semi can’t get into. Keep releasing great content!!
I’m really hoping I qualify for this. I’m going to get my TWIC card and MMC. Whatever I’m able to do to get in. I had to really show all this to my wife, and she’s on board. I’m turning 35 soon. You're funny, Davey's Jones locker was the craziest place of my childhood, my father was a merchant maniner, Signed on as a machinest when he graduated HS ended up as a chief engineer. That engine room was the noisiest place I ever was in my life.
Funny when you mentioned OS, I had forgotten it was an ordinary seaman and a wiper worked in engineering. About 30 years ago I lived in Diego Garcia and I knew a few guys who were regulars to the preposition vessels. Max overtime and little steaming. I thought about joining SIU once I moved to southern Maryland. Being in the Navy I had years of time at sea. Did you ever go into Betty Russell bar across the way from Paul Hall? Tall Timbers.... For me being at sea for long periods was better for saving money. Like in the UAE in and out of Port just stunk. Great videos and best of success as a mariner.

120 days..... now thats lenient. In UK, OS needs to do two 8 months tours and one uninterrupted 12 months tour before becoming AB :D

You're funny, Davey's Jones locker was the craziest place of my childhood, my father was a merchant maniner, Signed on as a machinest when he graduated HS ended up as a chief engineer. That engine room was the noisiest place I ever was in my life.

About 30 years ago I lived in Diego Garcia and I knew a few guys who were regulars to the preposition vessels. Max overtime and little steaming.
I thought about joining SIU once I moved to southern Maryland. Being in the Navy I had years of time at sea. Did you ever go into Betty Russell bar across the way from Paul Hall? Tall Timbers....
For me being at sea for long periods was better for saving money. Like in the UAE in and out of Port just stunk.

That's a great job the food is real good I worked on a ship in port for repairs and the food was great 3 squares a day and coffee unlimited mmmgood
