Ok so I watched like 3 tutorials on how to do this, and got so frustrated while sitting at my machine because I just couldn't get it! I have no concept of sewing construction whatsoever. But THIS tutorial made it so much easier! After huffing and puffing, I went back to my machine and finished my little bag the same night. This video saved the day! Thank you!

Thank you all for your comments. I appreciate the feedback about the raw edges inside and I am aware of methods to eliminate them. With that said, the intended audience for this video are beginners. The goal is a quick and easy project that a beginner can feel successful at and have something they created that they can be proud of. Thank you again for your input.

This was my first time using zippers! A great introduction to using them, thank you so much! It didn't come out perfect, I wasn't sure how to hide the zipper ends, but I followed this tutorial to a T and it made a cute, usable, giftable bag my first time trying! Thank you!

Hi Beth, thank you your comment. I’m glad it was helpful. You make a good point about the zipper ends and many patterns will call for a little Square sewn over them. For this one, my zipper end seemed to naturally tuck into the bag. Once I got over my fear of sewing zippers, it really opened up my DIY skills!

I have watched many videos now the last couple of weeks on how to install a zipper and the way you showed it was the best I have seen so far. I use to make all my own clothes - pants with zippers and skirts with zippers when I was in my late teens. I made my suit that I graduated high school in and I was not intimidated by zippers, button holes at all back then but, now in my 50s I have done neither for a very long time. My grandmother passed away some years back and she owned her own fabric store so that will give you a hint as to what my mom and my sewing rooms look like now. I am always looking for easy crafts to make with material to give as gifts or to sell and I have been wanting to make zippered pouches but, I just have had such a hard time following some of the other videos. Your's truly is the best I have seen. I love the seahorse fabric too!! My grandmother's fabric shop was the only one ever to be in the beach town where she lived. Thank you very much. Sincerely, Rebekah in Alexandria, VA

Rebekah, thank you for such kind words. It means so much to me that I can help someone else. As a kid, I taught myself to sew when my aunt passed away and we got her Machine and bags of fabric, not nearly your haul, I’m sure, lol. But to create meaningful little things from it is so rewarding. Good luck to you with all of you wonderful fabric!

Great video for beginners! My only problem was I didn't know how to sew over the zipper once sewn all the way around so it lefted my zipper hard to close up at the end of the pouch. Other than that, I loved the technique. Very easy & quicker! 🙂

So I am totally spatially challenged. I’ve known this forever but returning to sewing has made me more aware of my visual spatial processing difficulties (like don’t ask me to tell you where something is located based on landmarks cuz I can’t). Anyway, getting the second side done correctly on the other side of the zipper I finally (after taking it apart for the third time realized the zipper needs to be sandwiched in between the outer fabric and lining fabric. I found your channel and you said it!!!!! The key word is sandwich the zipper. No one said that!!! But I took a break, kept thinking about it and thought I have to sandwich this in but I need to double check and watch another tutorial!!! Totally stoked about bag making despite my difficulties😂🥰

    Hi
    So no topstitching needed?
Ive got a directional outer fabric with funny dogs. My biggest fear is always putting it together so the outer fabric lays in correct direction. I have trouble with that. Also, did you stitch close to the zipper with a straight stitch.? And how do you know where u are sewing when you are sewing the 2 pieces together at the top?

  • @lindaparsons3356
    @lindaparsons3356 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I was following your way until I realized that I started to sew it with the outer fabrics touching each other and the lining touching each other. I wanted to sew exactly the same way you did yours. But, It came out great anyway.

Thank you Tina, I was scared of zippers too, but now that I got over that fear, it opens up some great new projects.

Excellent and easy. Though, I would stress that it is important to have a zipper foot with your machine. Neither of my machines came with one and I couldn’t continue with the bag until I got one.

I would have liked to see the finished zipper from the front. I have a tiny bit of space and thought about putting a zipper tab on? I’ve made a few pouches but haven’t in a year or more.you video is great simple and easy just wished I could have seen the finished zipper a bit more closely. Once I make one again it will come back to me. I would like to hide the seem inside but it is a bit more complicated. Thank you for keeping it simple. Nice size bag too!

I love this but what to make a computer pouch for a 17inch computer how what should be my zipper measurements and fabric?

Hi Kisha, I would go for a finished width of 22” to allow a little room on either side for the computer, getting it in and out of the bag and such. You would use a 22” zipper. With a 1/2” seam allowance, and a little excess for the ends of the zipper, I would cut it 24” wide. For the height, I would figure laptop height + 3”. Good luck!

Is there a way to turn these into pillow pouches so that you could put a pillow insert in it and put some other things in it for when you go on the airplane trying to figure something out as I'm going to be traveling

Hmm, I do have an envelope style pillow cover tutorial. Not sure how to modify to store other items in it.
