In this video, I guide you step-by-step on how to sew a fabulous lined zipper pouch without tab ends! What makes this pouch extra special are its rounded corners, providing a wide opening at the top for easy access to your belongings. It also has boxed corners for added room and for it to sit flat.
To ensure a sleek and professional finish, I demonstrate how to cut the lining fabric in a way that eliminates any unnecessary bulk inside the pouch.
I'll be utilising Sweet Pea's Ultimate Beginner's Pack, which includes a large quilting ruler, cutting mat, and faux leather (vinyl)
The cotton fabric, and the size #3 metallic look zipper are also from Sweet Pea Embroidery.

OOPS! Please cut out 1" squares on from the bottoms of the lining after shaving the sides 1/4". What do you think of this method of sewing in a zipper and making a pouch? Happy Sewing🙂
Looking forward to trying it.
👌
I LOVE it!! Thank you❤
Can even do some machine embroidery on outside pouch also, then sew it up!!
I will try this soon. Thanks.
This is the best video i have seen on how to prevent dents at the ends of the zip. FABULOUS!
Thank you. Will have a new pouch video soon. Cheers!
I've never seen such an accurate and yet simple description of how to sew this kind of pouch without dents. Brilliant. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome! Hope you try it😊
As always a fantastic, informative video without all the mumbo jumbo chatter about everything under the sun. Love how explanatory you are with details of when to back tack and when it’s not necessary. So appreciative!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching🙂
Thank you a lot for sharing the best ever seen method for sewing the zipper pouch ❤️
Most welcome 😊
Detailed without being boring, informative without being overwhelming and most of all interesting! I’ve never sewn with vinyl but you make it seem doable. By the way, cutting that curve into the sides of the lining gave me such an “ah ha” moment! Genius!
Thanks so much!
This is one of the best sewing videos I've seen on TH-cam. Thank you.
Wow, thank you!
My introduction to zipper pouches was with the tab method, but I really love the look of this method! I'll have to try it on my next project. Thank you for sharing 😃
Yes I am not a big fan of zip tabs as you can’t open all the way. I will have a new design soon without tabs. Please subscrible and turn on notifications so you don’t miss it.😊. Cheers!
Thank you - this zipper method is revolutionary for me! Love this whole video! I need more of your fabulous tips! I made a tote bag installing zipper this way. 🎉❤
Wonderful!
I believe I have tried every zipper application that has ever been conceived. Except for yours. I tried yours today and I will say that I like it the best. I don't like tabs, the butler method is a little too detailed and most other methods don't give you nice curved sides. So thank you for demonstrating this. It is definitely my go-to zipper application from now on. 🪡🧵
Thanks for watching . I’m not a fan of tabs either. I like the top to open nice and wide. I’ll have more methods soon😊
I am a beginner sewist and love your videos! Your instructions and videos are very clear and concise. I am learning so many tips and tricks from you such as pivoting at the recessed corners and at the zipper teeth rather than stopping and cutting my threads and then restarting. Lol. On my very first project (before I watched your video), I made the mistake of sewing on the teeth and broker a needle. I won't be making that mistake again!
Thanks for your kind words😊🙏
Superb video of stitching a simple pouch.
I used to be confused about which side should the zipper teeth be, when the sides of the main fabric and lining are stitched. This doubt is cleared in this video @ approx. @ 4:50 to 5:10 minutes.
I got soo many useful tips.
Thanks a lot for sharing your skills.
Glad it was helpful! please share and have a look at some of my other tutorials.😊
Lovely demonstration and lovely voice too! ❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you so much!
What a lovely item! Just love your sweet calming voice and great visuals and clear instructions. Thank you.❤🤗
thanks so much🙂
I think this method of sewing a zipper in might just be what I've been looking for. If I have time, I'm trying it this weekend.
Thank you 😘,
Diane
Please do!
@@NotchesSewing I did! What a difference this method makes. Thank you so much! I've been sewing with canvas and this works perfectly.
Have a great week,
Diane 😘
This is beautiful! I love the colors you have chosen 💗💙💚💜
Thank you!
This is great, I could never get a nice finish over the zips and now I know why. Thank you. 😊
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much Angela, I really really enjoyed watching you creating this gorgeous pouch. I really really love ❤️ watching your videos, they’re so precise and so easy to follow too. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤❤
Thanks Mags! Very sweet of you to say 🙏
So excited to try this! 😊
Nice clean finish. And such cute materials! Thank you.
Thank you! 😊
Thank you for this. I have tried it and I really like the way the zip looks. Cutting a bit off the bottom and sides works well, and no messing about with zipper tabs!
You’re very welcome. Please have a look at my latest pouch video. It is just as easy th-cam.com/video/s9l9xVwtbt4/w-d-xo.html
Very interesting way to attach the zipper.Clear instructions always.Thank you 😊
Thank you😊

I am always excited to see a new video as I can't wait to learn from you. I appreciate that you have done your homework, tried many approaches to be able to save me time and effort by recommending solid methods and order of operations!
None of this crap - "I never done this before let's see how this video turns out"
Strong method, great photography and solid voice over. Thank YOU ❤️🇨🇦❤️
Thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate it. I test out on a lot of samples before making a tutorial. Cheers!
Cool technique! I look forward to trying this construction method.

Instant sub!! 👌
Wow, thank you!
Great tutorial differently will try.
Thank you! Cheers!
wow nice sewing
Thank you😊
Your zipper ends are beautifully done
thank you. I will have more pouch patterns soon. Cheers!
You are the first person to say what direction the zipper should go when sewing around the pouch. That always confused me. Than you!
You’re very welcome! Hope you try it😊
I agree completely!
Thank you
You're welcome
Every tutorial on ouches have told me to push zipper to lining. Your way is so much better! I was listening to the wrong teachers! Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
I actually prefer no topstitching on outer layer
@@NotchesSewing Me too! I will copy you.
let me know how you go 😊
Mi je zelo včeč zaključek pri zadrgi.
Thanks for watching!
Interesting on the zip at the side edge to prevent the unsightly pinch. You’ve actually made it look a class above!
Thanks for watching😊
Zelo lepo.
Thank you!
Great & informative video, can't wait to try this method! If I don't have a separating zipper, any tips on sewing? Or just follow the instructions as the video best I can?
you can just use a zipper that’s about 2” longer and you can trim away the top and bottom stoppers
Hi Angela, this is a wonderful tutorial, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I was wondering if you are able to make tutorial of this zipper pouch but with a curve top. How to stitch the zipper neatly. Thank you so much 🙏
Thank you! I will put on my list of requests
👏👏👏
Love this technique for a wide zipper opening without doing zipper tabs. Definitely will try it this week! Do you think the opening of the zipper at the ends will be affected if I topstitch the exterior fabric? I noticed you only topstitched the lining.
If you topstitch the outer layer first, you won’t be able to push the teeth in correct direction for the rounded corners. (I personally do not like topstitching on the outer layer)
That makes total sense. I knew you had to have a reason - brilliant! Thank you for another great tutorial!
Glad you like it. Have fun!
❤❤
Great tutorial! Question: Did you forget to show adding the 1" box corner cutouts for the liner? Would those be added after the 1/4" cut up the sides?
Wow you are the first person to notice this! Sorry I accidentally edited it out. Yes cut out the 1” squares after shaving off the ¼”. Thanks!
@@NotchesSewing Thanks Angela, no problem and thanks for the clarification! I'm a newbie sewer and still very pleased with my first go at this. Oh, that beautiful zipper line and lovely curves at the ends! I love your precise techniques and attention to detail. Thanks again.
Thank you - I"ve been tearing my hair out trying to get nice corners for this kind of pouch. One question - I've been making simple fabric coin pouches that's embroidered and I then iron on fusible interfacing. Therefore, there's no lining. How do you suggest I top stitch this after sewing in the zipper? I understand top stitching the outside fabric is the culprit of ugly looking corners. Looking forward to your other video with this technique.
Thank you for watching. Have you tried making with this very method using the interfacing as the lining?
💯💯💯👍
What a great tutorial. Was wondering if this method works as well with a fabric pouch as I haven’t used vinyl
Thanks
Yes works well with fabric. Add interfacing to fabric if you want pouch to have a bit more body
Thank you so much…🌺🌸
Just made one with quilting fabric, used fusible fleece for body. Turned out fabulous! Thank you!
@jessekeithsgirl Fantastic!! please try some of my other pouch designs etc..😊
A little late to the party, do you still stock this pale pink vinyl please? Great tutorial thank you. From the U.K.
Yes please look in the Sewing supplies for the PU leather. swpea.com.au/collections/beginner-tools-courses/?aff=60.

Thank you so much for this clear tutorial! I just subscribed:)
Question- could this method work if I didn’t want to use a liner (if I was using jelly fabric, for example)? If so, I imagine I would just start sewing after the zipper teeth (same idea, just no lining fabric)…
Yes you can but you will see the raw cut ends of the zip tape. But you can ad tabs to them on the inside for a nice finish. I have a couple of tutorials for simple zip tabs on my channel😊. Thanks for subscribing! I will have a new video out later today too with more household item sewing room hacks.
Thank you so much for your prompt reply! I will surely look out for your new content!!!!
Test out on scrap material in case you don’t like it and not waste your jelly fabric. (you must be in Aus . Most of my questions come in when I am asleep..😊)
Hi Angela, what is the difference between pointing the zipper towards the outer fabrics than pointing it to the lining fabric. Will the end result be significantly different? Thank you 🙏
Yes you will end up with a pleat at the teeth. Thanks for watching. I will have a new pouch video soon with another method to sew zipper pouch without tabs again😊
@@NotchesSewing thank you so much Angela. Looking forward to your new video ☺️
How you constructed this pouch just had me spellbound! I get why you trim the lining seam, but what is the reason for dropping the zipper down from edge on the outside (pink) ?
Making pouch without tab ends gives you a wider opening. You can unzip right to the edge. Also no need to fiddle with small pieces of fabric if you find that difficult. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the tutorial.
A question, why are you sewing a 1/4'' below edge of vinyl? Does that make a difference?
I have embroidered my faux leather and I don't have the extra 1/4'' available due to how I need to centre back and front pieces.
Because I am not using a zipper foot with this project, it just gives me a bit more seam allowance so that the topstitching on the lining has something to sew onto. You don’t have to add the extra ¼” if you don’t want to.
@@NotchesSewing Thank you so much for the response, appreciate it.
My pleasure. Happy Sewing😊
Tried it, thank you very much!
Just a question, should I not sew on the zipper tape also? or only on the zipper teeth? Thanks again!
Which part do you mean? The zipper teeth are not sewn at all.
I'm sorry, I meant the tape that holds the teeth, can't see it very well on mobile, should I not sew it also? Thanks!@@NotchesSewing
@@isdp736 I had to re-watch to be sure, yes you sew zipper tape & skip over the teeth only
Thank you! @@Kenna198 💖
If using a #5 zipper are the steps the same? Thanks
Yes same method. Have fun!
@@NotchesSewing thank you ☺️
I’m scared to sew faux leather. I don’t know what needle to use. If I did try to make it, can I do it in a larger size?
You can make in any size. Try getting some scraps of vinyl to practice on first. I just used a regular needle for this project.
One more thing to add, could you explain the differences in zippers? I don’t know the difference between a #3 and #5. What number is a dressmaker’s zipper?
dress zippers are size #3 as well. The number is the measurement in mm between edges of the teeth. #3 is lightweight good for pants, skirts, small pouches, inside pockets of bags. #5 is medium weight - good for jackets and heavier bags. Lots of good articles about zipper types if you google it.
Thank you! I have been doing a bit of “research” since I first left my comment. I truly appreciate you taking the time to respond.
@@PCOH051610 my pleasure😊 thanks for watching
Great tutorial, clear and precise instructions thank you. I was wondering if the presser foot your using would accomodate a Juki DX 5 ? I looked up the link you have given , but it appears to be a different foot to the one you are using. I bought my machine from Echidna and wondered if your foot came with the brother? Thank you.
Thank you. Sorry forgot to add a teflon foot link amzn.to/3PA1OjL . The foot I'm using is not from Echidna. It was from a large set of different feet that I already had. I will have a new tutorial later tonight. Cheers🙂
Why are my zippers not like yours 😭? I did skip the teeth of the zippers and I get a nasty curve of zippers at the end?
Are your seams facing right way when skipping over? Play video at slower speed and rewatch
Thank you for your tutorial, I followed all the steps but the final result was not as neat as on the video, at each end of the zipper the fabric is pinched, there's a small pleat, am I doing something wrong, for sure I'm not sewing on the teeth of the zipper, thank you
I can only guess that you are not pulling fabric flat or not clipping evenly? Maybe try sewing the end sections first to hold in place and go back all around. Just unpick the sides and redo.
@@NotchesSewing Thank you for responding so quickly, I think I found what I'm doing wrong, I top stitched both the lining and the outside fabric, like I used to do when putting a zipper on a pouch, what do you think? Thank you 😊
Yes that will definitely put a pleat in it😊
