- Working on the garage project recently I experienced a massive hydraulic leak and after quite some searching I found it to be a couple of the hydraulic lines rubbing against each other - the front blade was the culprit.
Take you through the fix and the rebuild.
Ian & Julie are building their biggest project of their lives - a Passive House Container Home which will be totally off grid, alongside their tiny homestead allowing them to live as close to self sufficient as possible in the heart of the French Pyrenees.

Hi Ian they make a metal wrap similar to the plastic one that is the proper protection for those hydronic hoses. If you have other hoses that need making up tell the people that make it up to fit the protection wile they make the hoses. Here in Italy I have the metal protection on all the hydronic hoses.
Yes, a metal wrap would be better. I will keep on eye on them now I know this has happened.
All of the guys I watch 'enjoy' a hydraulic failure from time to time.

Looks like most of the parts are off the shelf. Even if you cant get the right part some thing similar could be adapted to take its place. All the way down to the little engine.

I use to work on trucks. Get some hose to go over the line and zip ties. It will help keep rubbing for next time

This is great guys! My wife and I started looking into this machine when we came across your videos. We have a John Deere 1025r, with a backhoe and a pile of other fun attachments. What we plan on doing is taking one of these mini excavators and separating the digger from the tracks. We intend to mount the digger on the back of an old F250 pickup truck, then turn the tracks and blade into a micro bulldozer. The two rigs will serve two purposes. Skidding and loading logs to be milled, and working hard to reach gold claims. Good luck on your repair, cheers from Arizona!
Sounds like a great project - you would need another engine and hydraulics to split but it would not be too difficult. I am very happy with the little mini ex even though I had this problem - it is ready to go again and just waiting for a break in the weather. 😀
I've just watched all your videos on this little chinese machine. It seems it is almost readily fixable and it does its job. It's definitely worth the money.

I absolutely love your videos! I just purchased a Chinese Mini excavator, and Iso happy for your knowledge you share. I just learned that 90 percent of the hydraulic hoses and connections are actually made in China!
Most parts are these days. Although the new hoses I bought had Continental on them, I bet they came from another manufacturer.
A really good video, showing the simplicity of the design of the mini digger controls and how to carry out maintenance and repairs.

I also have one that I purchased from China last year and wondered if I could do more than just routine maintenance... like replacing hydraulic hoses. This machine looks very good for access to the pipework. The hoses do move around quite a lot when they are subjected to pressure, I think that is what causes the chafing rather than cab rotation. Your idea of having the extra oil cooler was very wise, we did not get such high temperatures here (in the Lot), this year, but I often think about the hydraulic system when it is 50 degs here, my main oil supply line went in a similar way on the mini pel, but the Volvo is not quite as accessible as your digger, but we could not work without it, that and our Fergi tractor and carry box, I will be interested to see your mini dumper. Great Job Ian. Hydraulic hoses are the norm on machines. That is one of those guarantees in life. A hose will eventually break. On the up side, you get to know your machine better.

Hi Ian that was really helpful to watch you give mini digger oil change hydraulic oil change and future proofing hose lines as you said its fairly easy to work on a few fiddles here and there powered wheel barrow looks like a good investment to the project. Julie is her usual self with her lovely smile and cheeky way she says things .sure puts a smile on others . Thank you Garry, really appreciate it. Yes the mini dumper will come in to its own very soon when we backfill the retaining wall. It is too tight for the tractor or excavator to get up there.

It will for sure, but also a lot safer as we have to go on the slope at the back of the garage. Should have bought it months back but you can't have everything at the same time 🤣
I put old garden hose around my Hyd. Lines that can rub against each other just slice a piece of pie because it will fit around the holes you want to protect and then wire tired in place. It works great and helps. I worked for a hydraulic company for years.

You can also take an old garden hose cut a piece the length you need and split it, wrap it around your hydraulic hose and secure with three zip ties. Works great. Nice job on repair.

Good to know what to look for. I only have 8 hours on mine so far. Looking forward to seeing the mini dumper and if it can be adapted to plough snow and maybe pull another trailer! Thanks for posting.
You can purchase the snow plough and a trailer attachment from Deleks....I am going to have a go at making my own trailer attachment as this will be very useful for us.

Got a 49 Ford 8N with a front end loader. The hydraulic lines had taken a beating mostly from sun damage drying them out. Used electric corrugated sleeve and zip tied it over my lines in order to protect them . Actually looks very pleasing as well.
Yes, I have that on my Kubota tractor although I do like the nylon sleeves you see on modern kit.
You're a genius Ian. Sorry to see you got a leak but happy to see you got it fixed. I try to check different things on my John Deere so I can catch something before it breaks. Good work my friend.
Taking it apart has given me the insight and confidence to check everything now - The Kubota Tractor is a little more complicated though 🤣
You don’t need to drain the hydraulic oil tank. As the engine not running so the oil pump isn’t running. The oil won’t leak
Good call, but this was a good opportunity to relate the original for a known brand here in France.
That’s true as you don’t know the quality of the oil used in the building of the mini digger.
My hydraulic oil is 20 minutes old and already being replaced. I sent a sample for evaluation. if it comes back with a good report, i will consider saving it or selling it to some other user.

That is great news - I am very happy with mine - a few issues but with usage things will always need fixing with nay brand of machine.
Nice video. I was thinking about the cable wrap also! I think it will work as a protection.
Now you know of the rubbing, you can check it every week to see how it holds.

No problem - for a DIYer these work great. I am not a pro so not sure how they are treated in the commercial world but if you own it, you look after it and it will last as long as you want it to. (one hopes 😉)
Where those hoses slide against the steel panel @16.27 I would split some hose pipe lengthways and slip it over the edge of the steel plate, just to avoid chafing. Better safe than sorry
Hi Mike - yes that is a good tip - I will take a look at it and after the first bit of work will check all the pipes again - I will be paranoid now.

@@HomesteadingUncontained Agreed, means we can dig footings and trenches to our own programme and I am sure it will open up many other opportunities.
With machinery hoses break seals leak and bolts come loose. No brand is immune to it. Have had brand new equipment show up on site that was broken from the factory. I will check hoses etc even on my cars and put sleeving in where it's needed. In many cases I use hose that I split open and slide over the hose or cable.
Also with anything from china that has oil... Always flush the factory oil out after a break in as it's very common to find allot of machining dust and chips in the oil. Not to mention I don't know what quality of oil they are using. I was very impressed with how clean that hydraulic oil was that you drained out. But I'd be modifying that drain for the future.
And yes I am still jealous I want one of those toys too. It's cheaper and smaller than the Kubota BX sized machines which I like cause they are basically big riding mowers that think they are little tractors.
Thanks for the comments - I will be sure to check my lines from now on - I was lucky it was only the blade feed and not the tracks as that would have been a right mess getting it back to the shop.

Each fitting has an o ring, so it would be OK.
at 24:08 Turn your jug around/over so the handle is lower than the pour spout, (up-side-down), then pouring is much easier and controllable.

I am a subscriber and have been watching your videos for a while. Thanks for showing all the work you have done on the mini excavator. I am planning to buy a similar one soon but perhaps with a swing boom. I have a small Chinese flail mower and if its any indication it does seem that these machines are not too difficult to work on. Of course the mini excavator will be a few steps up in complexity.
That is one of the reasons I wanted to strip all the panels off, so I could see exactly how it works. Now I know if I hear or see anything out of the ordinary, it is not a mystery inside. It is very easy to work on for sure 👍🏻
I have a Chinees SDJK 2 ton excavator, when they gave me a tour of their factory I saw Bobcats also being assembled in the same place. Please show as much maintenance as you can . I have already had to replace two grease fittings. I have a very good grease gun and you need to be sure it is off fittings befor you go to the next one.
Thanks George - exactly, a lot of known brands are also assembled and fabricated in the same factories. I am looking for a decent powered grease gun, and I will be changing some of the grease nipples for right angled ones as it was near impossible to fill a few of them.
The "pipes" ,are Called & referred to HOSES ,here across the Pond. The "Pipes" here are the Hard-metal-UNFLEXABLE tubes. I can get the "Bonnet vs. Hood" componentry. I was "loosing-it" EVERY TIME you were saying "The pipes". Kind of looks like that you Sir ; had a Lot of FUN with that "Monkey-Wrenching" ( spaner-ing) activities. Best wishes with all your endeavours.
hahaha, I know. Sometimes I get mixed up with French and English and even the word itself..... but yes, they are hoses.
you can also flip the connections to change the way the controls work, if u wish, but the fabric setup should be correct, but sometimes when people connect buckets, they connect the lines wrong, so you get mirrored controls, and if you dont know, you might be using the controls in reverse from the start. the bucket controls should be right stick and u move it forward then to the left and back towards you to make a scoop, but i ran a bobcat when i did it, so yours might not be the same, but mine just felt natural when using. other arm was the extension of the arms if im not wrong.
I do not know any different so it works for me...until I go and rent something else that is 🤪

I had a John Deere 240 skid steer which had two different hoses that would rupture due to this same type of thing. The hoses would rub on each other, and after about 500 hrs, they would start leaking through. I changed the hose lengths slightly, and it allowed them to float away from each other. Even the big guys have these issues is my point.
It was my fault for not checking but now I know these can be a problem I will be more diligent for sure. I saw on another channel that their Bobcat had done it so I didn't feel to bad 😀
Always check hoses, pipes, wires for excess rubbing slop BEFORE THEY FAIL. Use fixed cable ties, or add recoil springs, or SS mesh sheaths to keep things away from other parts on any vibrating machine. Now you've learned this, look over it for any other manufacturer omissions.
I check all the outer pipes regularly but this fail was deep in the machine and without taking off panels it is hard to spot. Hindsight is great and I will be taking more time to check on the problem areas. 👍🏻
Hydraulics are bad about rubbing holes in the lines. Put rubber hose around it and zip tie it on
Please make sure to degrease the 4 foundation-rubbers of the engine for hydraulic oil will make them soft and last much shorter.
Love your series and believe it or not I bought the same excavator from the same company and cannot wait till it arrives..........😊
Yes, I cleaned and cleaned them again. Most of the oil was from the engine as when I took it out it went everywhere.... again 😵💫 But now I have the pump👍🏻
Hi I've been watching you from almost the beginning, I find it very interesting. I do own a small excavator similar to yours. I found it back aching and jerky because of having to lean forward to reach the leavers. I overcame the problem by making fold down arm rests that I attached to the fiberglass engine cover, by resting my elbows on them I can reach the levers taking strain of my back and better/smoother control of the leavers. You should just make a handle adapter that sits on each lever and makes the lever longer and wherever your hand is perfectly...

Very nice repair Ian. I notice that your digger comes apart easier and faster than the brand I have. I'm off to check my hoses now! Was there a hydraulic oil filter changed? I have a small mesh filter that goes in the tank somewhere (haven't found exactly where yet). There is a spare in the tool kit supplied with my digger. Cheers Dave.
I do not think I have a hydraulic filter. I will double check if I can spot one in the tank. I was surprised how easy it was to take apart. Taking that seat off reveals near enough everything.
I would suggest that you try get some spare pipes as a bk up plan incase it happens again,,,Ian👍😎
Trouble is they are all differing lengths - it was only delayed due to the holidays - normally they can make them up while you wait.
You never know which one is going to be next to pop. And besides that, most every hose is a different length
Nice work Ian, have you ever thought about modifications you can make to stop the machine from being so jerky aside from using the controls like cinderella?
Hi Alfred - I think it is the motor itself. If takes a lot out of it when I move the controls. Always on the look out for a 2nd hand kubota motor just in case.
at 11:50 It is more probable that the hose damage was from EVERY application of power, not just blade power, causing the main pressure hose to jump around each time (Maybe from blade power application, but not from spinning or the actual totality of the work being done). Look for jumping hoses on every circuit and cushion or restrain them and be safe around potential bursting hydraulic hoses! Safety glasses and injection proof gloves, etc.
Cheers John, yes, I check it all now and have rerouted to give more clearance. I also rerouted the electrical cables to avoid heat (I had issues with ignition cable melting).

Hahaha, I do clean it from time to time. So far it has all been dry work though, so just a dust off. Yes the pedal operates the auger and the pipes terminate just before the bucket. Looking at putting on a manual thumb in the future.
Are you still pretty happy with the digger, I know all things need fixing now and then. But do you still like it?

Continental is from Hannover (GE), 6 km south of the former British Hospital...
We have a continental factory just down the road from us, quite a big plant to.
@@HomesteadingUncontained In Hannover is the head of Continental but it is great they produce all over Europe and you can get spareparts everywhere.
I had an issue here with a no name brand and went to a shop where they repair all kind of hydraulic things. They made that hose for me but they looked at me: "Really? Must we do that for you?" And it was expensive...
Is this original hose GENUINE Continental? or fake Continental markings on Chinese hose stock?
I recently watched a video from "Ambition strikes" where they had a similar hose wear on their pretty new Caterpillar skidsteer so obviously this isn't only a "chinese" problem...
I saw the same one and thought the same thing - it was just bad luck and lack of checking on my part.
I have one just like yours, except it’s a Nicosail okw10. The only thing I see different is mine has a B&s 13.5 hp gas engine. Do you think the same company makes them for different sellers? By the way, great videos, keep ‘em coming.
Cheers Ronnie - I think they buy standard chassis and parts and the smaller factories then put them together to sell as their own brand. Alibaba comes up with hundreds of different sites and the machines all look the same.
btw, even if the machine price is to much, its worth getting one to learn how to fix it, so if u were to buy a bigger one later, you would know the basics, so you would learn on this cheap one instead of the expensive one, also you can buy a used bigger one if u need, then just fix whats wrong instead, but you would need a breaker bar and some winch system probably, as you need to pull off the hydraulics and so on.

Not sure, from carrying it, it felt around 50kg..... then plus me sitting up there.

No, not yet 🤣 I was worried with all the gravel but as soon as I felt it stick, I jumped off and prised out the blockage.
Just make sure that you have the correct level of hydraulic oil. All of the cylinders should be in the retracted. Then look at the level of the hydraulic tank if it is what it is supposed to be you are ready for fun 😉
I overfilled a little as I could not quite see the gauge. But I will check it all again before I go on site. Ground is all frozen at the moment, so waiting for the sun.

It was around 50. I think it was just bad luck how they were sitting. I have separated them now and checked the other too.
Quite a faff for such tiny hoses. Put some zip ties on any hoses that may rub - those cable protectors will wear quickly if it's hose-on-hose.
Didn't think those Koop engines met air quality standards? Can't import them into the US. My 1.5T chinese mini has a EPA-certified Kubota engine.
Yeah, the protector is for electric cables really. The motor is CE approved for Europe, if not they would not have let it in. But I would have loved the kubota option but this doubled the price for me.
Hose isnt that the name? i think pipe is the name of the hard lines that are compleatly made of metal.
Yes sort of, pipe in french or various different words. But hose is better.
even on pretty high end machines i get a good look at those hoses placement and fix it if needed can ruin a day of work on the long run that a lesson for growing up on Renault tractor, the smell of dust/hydraulic fluid amalgam make my hands feels sticky and itchy!!! well even on a 400hours Liebherr telehandler i found a wear spot on a couple of hoses i guess its another construction brand after CAT (big disappointment) that's not up to fendt's standard.
also find a better shop for your supplies one week for a hose is outrageous you could order them from Hydrodis in that timespan (but selecting the right fittings is tricky) that why i would recommend going to an agricultural dealership most of them are equipped to do hydraulic hoses you would be coming home with your new part. Also parks and lawn equipment dealerships are a major rip off in my experience.
It was a tractor supplier, but it was over the holiday period and they were missing one connector...but the price was ridiculous. Makes me want to buy the hydraulic press and do them myself.

I had them made up locally. They are just standard hydraulic hoses. All good 👍🏻

I hesitated several times buying Chinese machines but never dare to move forwards. I had a loader in test, imported from and built in the US, and it had the same problem : two hoses rubbing on each other. Looks like this is an engineering misconception. I would be very interested to have your return on this kind of machine on the long term.
Hi Pierre - I am about to put out a 1 year on video about this machine. It will be an update on what has gone on with the mini ex.
A best practice when you are working on the hydraulic system is to shut off the fuel to the engine and crank it to make sure the hydraulic pump is well primed after your repairs. These machines use gear pumps and running without sufficient oil for even a short time can destroy them. Should be less of a concern on this machine given the placement of the hyd. Reservoir, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. When a gear pump fails, it often will send a ton of trash into the hydraulic system and could cause your valves to hang up.

I contacted the manufacturer of my machine regarding the hydraulic filter and actually received a rather quick reply. They sent a picture of the suction line fitting on the outside of the tank and a picture of a suction filter. Apparently, the filter is indeed located inside the hydraulic tank and attached to the suction line fitting from inside of the tank. I only have a few hours on mine so far, so I am not to the point yet where I need to do my initial fluid change (30 hours according to their recommendations), but I will check this by opening the tank access port when I change the hydraulic oil. These filters only filter out large particles coming into the pump (150-400 microns) so I'm still considering adding a return line filter that will filter out down to 25 microns. These are canister type filters that look like a standard oil filter from a car although the pressure rating is higher. They make a 10 micron filter too but not sure if that might add too much flow restriction so I'll probably start with 25 micron.

Filters and mounting heads will sometimes have bypass features to prevent starvation or over pressurization.

Thank you for the video. I have a similar machine from a different company but found many hoses were also rubbing together so I think you saved me some trouble and unnecessary expense coming up in the future. I noticed that my machine does not seem to have a return line canister type filter. Did you find one in your machine somewhere? I am thinking of adding one as I have heard that oil contamination is a big cause of failure in these machines. Any advice on where it should go? My feeling is that the easiest would be to disconnect the return line where it enters the fluid tank, move it to the other side as the inlet to the filter block and then get a new line made to go from the filter block back to the tank. What is the normal pressure on the return lines? Generally you can get a filter block with a bypass valve but the pressures are variable (starting at about 25 psi it seems). I also noticed the oil cooler model on your machine, KEILETO AF0510-CA, seems to be available on Alibaba as a direct replacement part. Does anyone have any experience in adding these to a system and would it be worth it (I live in Georgia US where summers are generally in the high 80's to low 90's Farenheit). I've only got an hour on the machine and have already had to put a track back on and the documentation is mostly useless for things like that, so I think there is a lot of trial and error for all of us with small machines like this. The other thing I have noticed is that people want to replace the grease fittings on the boom with Zerk fittings. The ones that are flat are actually fillable. There is a small spring loaded ball in the middle and it takes a pointed grease nipple on the gun that can fill them directly. This type of fitting is placed where the Zerks may get broken off so my advice would be not to change them out on the end of the boom and other places where they are vulnerable. I look forward to any advice anyone has on better ways to use and maintain this type of equipment.
I am going to look into a filter. Another guy, Dave from Tree Change Farm mentioned there may be one in the tank itself so I will have another look there. I will also ask Nuoman if they have any ideas. Thanks for commenting and the ideas.

One great thing about living in an Agricultural area of Eastern Poland, there are various places that will make up hydraulic pipes of every kind and size, while you wait. and cheap, so cheap that when he told us the price I thought I had heard wrong (and the pipes are good quality German rubber).....what I do is check where pipes rub and I wrap with a split part of a 'dead' pipe held by cable ties....it has worked so so far. Note: are you considering dying soon?? No I thought not, so collect oil....it will keep in cans kept out of the light....One day in a pinch you can filter it as fuel/fuel supplement, use it for oiling hinges, gates etc, even for painting on wood that might rot. Having 3 tractors, a Unimog 2 Jeeps and an Isuzu pick up, I have a lot of waste oil every year.
They were quite expensive here and we are supposed to be in an agricultural area (village is just farms). Each pipe was €50 which I was not too happy about. I normally use a different lot but it was holidays so they were the only ones open at the time.

@@HomesteadingUncontained probably did not give you the discount they give to a "Regular" customer. It happened to me today, 1 office of a multi office hydraulic supply store quoted $26 for a filter mount/head, and a different office tried to charge me $60.
i think if u were to get a new line custom made, you could get one thats a bit longer so it hopefully wont rub against the other once, but not sure. "i havent watched the full video yet by the time i made this comment, but i will watch the full video."
You are probably right and missed a trick there - but I did put protection around them and rerouted one so it would not touch the other.
Hummmm. Google says Continental is a German tire company.
Always a good idea to go over new equipment looking for areas on hoses and wires that could be prone to chafing and protect them at that point if possible. This includes automobiles. I've worked on heavy equipment for years. I've seen this over and over. Easy to avoid this situation. These hoses aren't cheap nor is the oil. This whole thing is frustrating to say the least.
We have a huge Continental Plant just down the road from us so I like to think they are local 😀 Yes, I rally my little historic Renault so over the years, I have realised preventions is a lot better than trying to fix it at midnight on the side of a mountain... @@HomesteadingUncontained I totally understand. To be honest I didn't know where Continental tires hailed from. Have always thought their tires might be a Japanese brand. The brand is highly regarded and wide spread here in the states. As a matter of fact my neighbor just bought four new Contental tires for his car.

I am assuming they are very similar (looks very similar) so if you pull off the panels (as much as you can) you should see the big square tank with the glass see through panel to check level. Under this tank there should be a valve or drain plug. You just change the oil as per a normal oil change (using correct hydraulic oil).

What is the Name and Model of your mini excavator? I’m in the USA and I have access to Agrotk QH12 models. Are you familiar with this model and how it compares, quality wise, with your mini excavator? I know the engines are different. I’d be interested in your opinion in the quality comparison of hydraulic lines, hydraulic cylinders, strength of steel components, tracks, etc. I can get a Agrotk QH12 for $7500 USD. Some distributors want more (e.g. $8,000 USD).
Our machine is from Nuoman Engineering and is the NM E10 (1 tonne machine). I cannot compare it to any other manufacturer as I do not know them but I assume the majority of the sourced parts are very similar. The price you quote is as good as buying it directly plus you will get local warranties etc so that would be the best path to follow for sure. Hope it all goes well.

I've looked at these. The drive motors are not protected! Bad design concept!
It can happen on any machine and these hoses are from Continental so I just replaced them locally. The motors are similar, again, on many machines. No issues at all.
