    The last part is wrong, just wrong. The finger never needed to be cut off. Bayek used the blade before without cutting his finger but during the scene, he was struggling and couldn't pull his fingers back up because his fingers were held while he was trying to punch. The only reason they do it is because it shows devotion like a mark of the brotherhood. Which is actually cool when you remember that Ezio was devoted to the hood and didn't complain about the tradition when Da Vinci joked about it.

    • @Qq-wk8mg
      @Qq-wk8mg ปีที่แล้ว +161

      And then after da vinci's modification, learned from altair's codex, the blade won't cut the finger even when an assassin is struggling, e.g. when the fingers are all curled, like bayek. The finger cutting tradition, besides for swearing loyalty to the brotherhood, also for preventing accidents like bayek's mid mission. We can see the tradition still held even after da vinci's modification, however instead of finger cutting, the brotherhood replaced it with burning the ring finger

    • @BlueV205
      @BlueV205 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +38

      It was a retcon. Before Origins, it has already been established that the Levantine hidden blade can only be unsheathed with a clenched fist motion, and the blade runs through the space of what used to be an Assassin's ring finger. It was made that way until Altair created the Codex and modified the design of the hidden blade so that the unsheathing motion was changed into an open-hand wrist flick, eliminating the need to cut off one's ring finger.

    • @_Chaosnight_
      @_Chaosnight_ 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      The reason why Bayek even lost his finger in the first place was because he used the blade wrong, Darius the original owner of the first hidden blade wore it on top of his arm and used it as an fist blade where he would strike in a punching motion, Bayek though it goes to the underside of the wrist tho which is why he lost his finger and created both the tradition to cut the finger of as a sign of dedication and the practice to wear the blade like that

    Wasn't da Vinci the one who made all these hidden blade alterations in AC2 and then Altaïr used the apple of Eden to see into the future or something? Because when Ezio recieved his hidden blade it was still made to cut off a finger but da Vinci modified it. He also added the gun

    • @Gradestar10
      @Gradestar10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      No, it was altair who made various modifications to th hidden blades during his mentorship n years on th run after maria's death. He modified th blade so that it wasn't longer necessary to cut off a finger, as he considered it a 'false promise of paradise'. He transcribed all his changes in his diary, th pages of which then ended up in th hands of leonardo who copied th notes to work on ezio's blade. Altair, w/ th apple, had visions of th past n th isu, n in 'revelations' he tells abbas that he also saw th future, but isn't very specific on this point. Leonardo, in ac2, simply tells ezio that th blade was modified to avoid cutting th finger, he doesn't say that it was he who modified it at that moment. Th gun was also invented by altair, during his last years of exile before returning to masyaf. Th only things leonardo invented were th modification to th poison blade in ac brotherhood, now giving th possibility of shooting poisoned darts frm a distance, n then a small crossbow to place on th blade, which would later become th phantom blade seen in ac unity. Leonardo invented th proto phantom blade for a student of ezio to replace th gun, as ezio didn’t yet consider him expert enough to use a firearm like that

      The practice to cut of the ring finger wouldn't have been created if Bayek would have used the blade correctly, Darius the creator of the hidden blade intended it to go on top of the forarm not on the wrist
      Bayek not knowing how the blade is properly used created the practices to wear it on the wrist and to lose on finger

      In ac Valhalla, we learn that the over arm mount is more visible than the under arm one.
      Eivor said she wants to show it off.
      So depending on how stealthy or battle ready you want to be, either is correct.
      But as a "hidden blade"
      The traditional under arm mount is the correct way.

  • @Avankiri

    For everyone saying Leonardo made the no finger removal, gun, and poison dart modifications, no, he didn't.
    The Codex outright shows that Altair removed the requirement of cutting your finger off to make it less obvious who was an Assassin...despite the fact they still wear white hoods and robes even centuries later.
    The poison was introduced by him as well, to get rid of traditions saying certain methods of killing were forbidden.
    He invented the hidden gun with the help of visions from the Apple to take care of targets from long range.
    The dual hidden blades idea came from the discovery of metals allowing the crafting of many more HBs. For a time, only certain Assassins were allowed to use dual HBs. The new metal, or new forging methods at least, also made it possible to allow hidden blades to be used in open combat rather than just as stealth kills or to counter kill someone.
    Please replay AC2 and read every codex after our bro Leo translates them. Also, hug him in Venice or you're a monster!

    Thanks to Leonardo Di Vinci, his work with the context of artifacts blueprint has a modern alternative of keeping the finger. But the thing is, the prototype allowed more space for the killing to be completely inconspicuous limiting the weight of everything else that comes with it such as the gadgets. That’s why Altair has always been the superior assassin after Ezio Alditore. He simply didn’t need all that. 🤣

    Fun fact: while in later centuries, the removal of the ring finger was no longer a necessity, many branches of the brotherhood still did something similar to initiate new members. Some of the more hardcore sects still removed the ring finger out of tradition. Others put a tattoo of a ring on the finger. Others had a brand. Others still had actual, physical rings. An interesting way to show the evolution of tradition.
