Aluminum shells have an extra ringing sound that I like. I have made a few drums out of second hand aluminum cooking pots and pans, and they sound amazing.

I love my Ludwig Acrolite aluminum shell snare and I'm buying a 6.5 inch Ludwig Supraphonic soon. I love the sound of an aluminum snare but I've never heard an aluminum tom. I'd love to hear that!

Now THAT'S how you cut a bearing edge. I was watching a trip to the Sonor factory and the worker cutting the edges didn't EVEN put that much detail in to the work. Completely unacceptable for drums in general, but especially for a company that prides itself on quality and certainly charges for it. Great work, Rob!

Where did you manage to get a sheet of sandpaper that big?

+sgtpepper1138 I forget. Some industrial supplier. We keep it cleaned with a giant, rubber "sander eraser"... so we only need to change it every few years.

Where are the shells made? And how? I was hoping to see the wood being steamed and bent - or lathed.

      They use Keller shells.
I built my first kit with everything coming from Andy Foote (owner of DSH) back around 1997 and it is still the best kit I have ever heard. It sings.
