    I was sexually abused by my father. No one believed me even though he was terrible. I turned to drugs and alcohol for relief. I am now 54 and only smoke pot, which is a minor miracle. My brother committed suicide I feel due to the abuse by my father. Trauma causes multiple kinds of illness in a person.

    Never idolize people. Just enjoy the work someone does and see it separate from the person. Humans are flawed. ALL of them. Some do or make great things, but they are still flawed.

      Kind of impossible to separate the work from the artists especially for the artists that receive money from people consuming their content.

    • @Zeitgeist6
      @Zeitgeist6 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@slither7760 Nah. If you want to go to the extreme as to not even wanting to pay for their work, you can always pirate it.
      But then you will also potentially not get new work. So that's a double edged sword.
      Also that's why I say:"Never idolize people." If you don't get emotionally invested in the person, it's much easier to just appreciate the art they make.
      Invest your emotions on the people around you that matter, not on everyone else in the world. You'll live a much happier and less stressful life.

      @@Zeitgeist6 You can't separate a sculptor from the sculptures any more than a writer from their works. their experiences, feelings and thoughts will always show in their writing.
      however, like you said pirating is a good choice for those who want to enjoy the media but not support the creator.
      it's a rough time for the victim and we should all try to not engage with his works or pirate and not engage in fandom as to not give gaiman free publicity thru it

      @@slither7760 Well, your never going to read a book, watch a movie or listen to music ever again. They're all imperfect human beings having said something, done something or believe something you or I would consider morally reprehensible. They say you should never meet your idles as they always fall short of our expectations.

      The problem with separating Gaiman from his writing is his sexual proclivities are throughout his work. I’m just unable to enjoy his writing anymore. That’s just me personally though.
      I don’t judge anyone for what they read.

    I am with you all the way. Just put all my Gaiman comics in the free bin outside. Energy is energy and I don't want that kind of energy. No more excuses. Let's move into an age of responsibility. No one has it figured out and making mistakes is part of this life.

    Not looking like a predator is such a weird thing to say, especially with people like Ted Bundy, who was literally know to be charming and charismatic.
    Looks doesn't make a bad person, actions however do.

      I agree. I think some people have a hard time wrestling with the fact that someone they like/could be attracted to could end up being a bad person. But at the end of the day, it's our actions that define us.

    Thank you for making this. You've articulated so well exactly all the nuance of what's wrong about this situation, outside of the allegations themselves.
    I was in the middle of making a video about Sandman when I found out, and felt quite blindsided. I've wanted to talk about it, but haven't felt like I could do it justice. You most certainly have.

    The Alice Munro thing reminds me of the Marion Zimmer Bradley situation, although Bradley may have been even more of a monster.
    The art/artist thing is difficult and personal. I know I wrestle with it a lot, and I can't claim that I'm consistent with it. I enjoy reading H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, even though both men had ideas I find reprehensible. But after the truth about M.A.R. Barker came out a couple years ago, I dropped his books completely. I wasn't a huge fan of Neil Gaiman, but I had some of this books, and I've tossed those. Jimmy Stewart was a raging racist, but I still love a lot of his movies, and while I'm not planning on ever going to another Johnny Depp film, I still own a bunch on DVD. I still love Gloria Grahame films, even after I learned about her super, super creepy private life. Am I a hypocrite? I don't know. Why do I pick one and not another? I don't know. Why does everyone mention H.P. Lovecraft's racism whenever they talk about him, but I never hear anyone talk about Bram Stoker's, Agatha Christie's, or Patricia Highsmith's when they talk about them? I don't know. I don't have any answers. I just wish people would stop being so awful all the time.

    • @bobspldbckwrds
      @bobspldbckwrds 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Lovecraft is an interesting example to me. He was notably racist for his own time, with prejudices that are both boringly expected, like his prejudice against black people or his homophobia or misogyny, and some that are incomprehensible to someone who is modern, like his prejudice against the welsh.
      And while he was percolating these prejudices in his head, he wasn't very successful in his time, and between the discourse educating people about that brand of foolishness and the reclamation of his ideas by the same people he looked down on. His legacy has honestly done probably more good than he caused harm in his life.
      Besides, the more of those categories you meet that he hated, the more it would piss him off to have you reading it, much less if you were to adapt or build off it. Especially if you are welsh.

      Bram Stoker makes H.P. Lovecraft look like a civil rights champion. 'Lair of The White Worm' is so full of racist language, that I'm amazed it still gets published. I'm a massive 'Dracula' fan, and always will be, but even in that novel, the Count's description is extremely, almost laughably, anti-Eastern European (let's not get started on the anti-Semitic caricature that the original Count Orlok is).There's a HPL documentary somewhere where NG almost excuses Lovecraft's racism. I love the work of both men, but again, that doesn't excuse their failings as human beings.

    I have only read few Niel gaiman books, but I remember reading stardust, and I just thought, the boy and star's 'wholesome' relationship was actually built on a foundation of coercion. It gave me a bad taste even though it supposedly had a nice ending. That's not to say you can infer this from anyone's work, but it's still funny how it maps onto real life

  • @maef7026

    I was side eyeing him when he broke up with his former partner and apparently by "accident" some of his search history was leaked and he was searching things like "living with a psychopath" or something like that.
    This just reminds me of the SNL sketch where everyone is trying to hit on a girl and telling her how much of a feminist they are but the moment she tells them she's not interested they call her a b*tch and get aggressive. I'm pretty sure that everytime he committed some heinous act, he would do something that would make him seem like more of a feminist just so he could keep "tricking naive females"(because at this point I can't imagine him any other way then using this kind of gross language).
    Thank you for sharing your own story, the thing is, there is a lot of nuance to every situation and we can't be no nuance nellies and compare this situation with Gaiman to every relationship and deem it as bad just because it has some similarities to it.

    This is very disheartening but it proves why we should not put anyone- celebrities, authors, family members -on a pedestal. Considering his stance with how they tackled the SA in The Sandman series, it's absolutely awful and horrific. While I am someone who believes in innocence until proven guilty, it definitely is something that should be investigated and looked into.
    And he and his wife are actually divorced or undergoing divorce as well. But I think you handled this discussion and topic very well.
