    I am far from smut booktok and I mainly read books for intellectual purposes but I watched a lot of videos on this topic. I feel like those books are for entertainment and not for analysis. So not reviewing them on a deeper level is totally okay. But I feel like we have to seperate those two types of readers and encourage people who are already have a reading habit to read more intellectual books.

    The thing is that, as you said TikTok is a fast content platform, so there is no deep analysis about things (I also, don't have TikTok but my attention span is short anyway, and that type of content makes it worse for me since I can't fully process things without being bombarded by something new. ). Books are more than tropes, but books or movies, etc. can't be explained, in the time it takes to make a TikTok, not fully. People also forget that there were, just like today, always bad romance and good romance books, the only difference is that people find out more about them than before because of platforms. Publishers haven't cared for a long time, a good example of it is a book (a biography) about how a man, deprived of their life, two children and then wrote the book in detail about it, and it became famous. And it's not only books, in fact, it can be said about a lot of things, for example; mangas, movies, TV shows, etc. My personal opinion in romance is that it's ok if you like it, but it's also ok to accept that sometimes the characters don't have the best relationship there is. Oh My God, I wrote a School paper on your TH-cam video, that's how good you are.

    So, this annoys me: But you can be an intellectual without a college education and college is for getting a degree that will get you a better paying job, not to be an intellectual. Plenty of college degrees have nothing to do with intellectualism. You don't have to have spent 60k to be an intellectual or to value intellectualism, and plenty of absolutely insane public figures (see conservative politicians and social media influencers) who have degrees are vehemently anti intellectual. They aren't the same thing.

    There is absolutely a portion of people saying "the curtains are blue" type comments. Or trending videos saying they skip paragraphs if they're too long. Others saying some books just have too many words? There's definitely anti-intellectualism on that platform. Though i also agree that is not the best platform for deep conversations

    • @MrRosebeing

      I would argue that TH-cam isn't exactly the best place for deep conversation either.

    • @Diana-mu7pc
      @Diana-mu7pc 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MrRosebeing That's true, in that the TH-cam algorithm doesn't tend to favor nuance, but I think there are exceptions, and plenty of them. TH-cam encourages, or at least promotes, enough variety as to satisfy every niche, which makes sense because they're a monopoly. The most successful channels on TH-cam aren't a good place for deep conversation, but I do know tons of successful channels that cultivate audiences that want thoughtful, informed, measured content. TikTok is just built in a way that its features are more limited for making that sort of thing. It's like the id of video platforms to TH-cam's ego.

  • @DanLyndon
    @DanLyndon หลายเดือนก่อน

    An author friend of mine uses the term "deliteracy" to describe this problem. People can read, but they lack media literacy and an understanding of or ability to evaluate the artistic aspects of a work of literature. TikTok is merely an extreme extension of this broader systemic issue. It is much older than TikTok and seems to have been building over the last few decades, only accelerating with the internet. Even TikTok used to be less utterly moronic. People used to be able to use words to say a couple of insightful things about a book, instead of screaming and pulling faces. Book reviewers on TH-cam are also fairly deliterate, even those with English degrees who make long, pretentious videos. It's ridiculous. Goodreads as well. Every book I look up on GR, the amount of reviews that are just so... dumb. Like, maybe 5% of the people who read I Am Legend comprehended what that book was about with any nuance, and the rest of them just talked out of their asses. Didn't matter how long or short the reviews were. They think it's a Stephen King book or something. We get 3-hour podcasts and video essays of nothing but BS that claim to be "deep dives" so it's not surprising. Also, "I don't think there is a lack of good literature being put out." Artful literature of depth and great characterization, yes there is absolutely a lack of that. People don't even know what that looks like anymore and think mediocrities like Cormac McCarthy or Jonathan Franzen or Percival Everett meet that standard, whereas before you might have had truly great writers like Betty Smith. These days, I hear Betty Smith being compared to hacks like J.K. Rowling because both wrote stories about children growing up. People's level of engagement on every level is so shallow and superficial that they don't get anything of depth out of what they read, even when there is a lot to get out of it. Readers are cooked and it's not even funny. I don't care if people just want to read stuff for entertainment. It's the fact that they CAN'T go beyond that (without talking out of their ass) that I have a problem with. P.S. You're misusing the term "high concept." It does not mean intelligent literature, it means a story that can easily be boiled down and pitched in a few words.

      Thank you so much for this comment! I'd love to hear more about your experience as someone who works/worked behind the scenes in publishing. • @m.merritt310
      @m.merritt310 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kutiefly Well, I think that's a very chicken or the egg way to put it. For many years, larger publishers have prioritized books that could be formulaic - self-help, YA, romance in the more modern sense, and more relevant to work I've done, X popular thing: the cookbook! While I'd hardly say books are dying, the monopoly of the big five really pushed books that can be considered easy cash, which rarely means good or deep. The TikTok part seems more like another version of fandom culture to me, at least in the popular end of booktok (which would rarely include people I follow closely). The troupes especially are a result of fan fiction tools being applied to original fiction. Some of it is fun, some is thought-provoking, and a lot is messy drama - although now instead of it being based on people's creations they made for the love of it, it's mostly the easy cash books created to fit the trend du jour. And you see why I am considering leaving publishing lol

    😊 Yeah. Ive found that these generas are hard to sort of- differenciate and make the story sound interesting. I remember seeing a post on youtube saying that using a ao3 tagging system would work better since you can get deeper into the details of the story- thus why its so easy to find something you want- so long as you know what to search for. I think its a great idea, there needs to be a certain system but it could work.

    • @rainx7078
      @rainx7078 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also. Selling a premise is much harder since- well you are selling what makes the story unique and different- which is scary and offensive to people even if they have the choice NOT to pick it up. I remember this happens a lot in the anime community, where the joke is you can find an anime/manga on just about anything. Ramen Lunch wars Giant bugs Kindergarten Ect. Ect. Two that really stand out to me in my memory is "Onimai!" And "Oshi No Ko" Onimai is a show about a 20-something shut in brother whos younger sister - a scientist- turns him into a girl and thus he has to learn and live as a middle schooler. Twitter. Got mad. Twitter is always mad though. But it is a weird premise. Thus harder to sell. Even better yet is one I haven't watched its called "Gushing Over Magical Girls." It's ecchi. And Yuri. It's very out there. When you market based on the premise it takes more time and effort to convince or to keep people watching- the people don't have to watch- but it's hard it goes.

    I must say I sometimes miss the middle. What kind of annoys me that with social media it doesn't matter what "type" of literature you read it's so aestheticized. If you read classics the vibes are soo gatekeepy and it romanticises academics so much that to me it kind of sucks the life out of it. And with "booktok books" I am also pretty annoyed with the amount of tropes although I do not see it as a particular new phenomenon. But to me I am still looking for my niche in social media that is somewhere in the middle. I think I am annoyed that book genres are kind of associated with cores. Dark academia with classics etc. It feels like there only exists archetypes that no real person really fits into. But that's not only a problem of booktok I guess

      I guess I just don't like literature being treated sometimes as a kind of decoration or accessory. It feels really weird and superficial to me but that is also not new I guess. Status signaling with books always has been a thing, I just hate it haha

      I think a lot of people share your feelings. It's interesting how some people can turn anything into an aesthetic when it comes to lifestyle content like what you read, what you eat, what makeup you wear, what sort of mental illness you have, etc. In a way, it can help you find people with similar interests to you, but it also encourages people to try in fit into little boxes/rigid definitions of a certain look or trend. I think its best if we all just try to be ourselves and enjoy things because we genuinely like them, not just because we want to fit in with a certain group ❤️ The right people will still come along in good time. Even if it takes a hot minute 😂
