I raided the internet for years looking for original storyline leaks, deleted content, scrapped content etc, etc. I first played this through when I was 10 and was completely obsessed. Through the eyes and imagination of my 10 year old self, I look at Angel of Darkness for what it could and should have been (and was planned to be): an incredible, dark trilogy. The basis is there, it's just so unfinished but with a little imagination and patience you can fill in the gaps and imagine where they were going with this. Dispite the drawbacks, bugs and unfinished content, Angel of Darkness is my favourite game; from the beautiful soundtrack; to the dark edge it has; Lara's appearance and the voice acting; Kurtis Trent (who was originally intended to be a more playable character, with the player able to control all his abilities); the creativity of the levels; the interesting storyline. It's an unfinished masterpiece of a game with some awesome cutscenes. Sure, it should never have been released unfinished but honesty, I'm just glad it wasn't scrapped completely. The overall feel and atmosphere it has is, dare I say, beautiful and gripping. I've played this game so many times over the past 16 years and I still love it! If only it could be remade, with the same look and feel, just with updated graphics and the whole trilogy completed to the writers original storyline.

It’s a cult classic, I enjoy it too now that I’m older and can appreciate the story element, characters and this game probably had the best soundtrack out of the entire series.
I enjoyed the Legend trilogy too. Probably cause that's where I started, but I had lots of fun playing those Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld. However, I wouldn't say the reboots are bad, but I prefer the original series and would like the only badass Lara Croft again now.
I loved the Legend Trilogy. Every entry felt unique and Actually travelled the globe like Pera, Tokyo, India, Cornwall and was well built exploring myths and legends like King Arthur, Excalibur, Knights of the Round Table while balancing the mystery of Lara's mom's disappearance. Plus the cast of characters, Zip, Alistair, Winston were always nice to chat too and offered a bit of comic relief and Keely Hawkes did an amazing job as Lara. Whereas the 2013 Reboot, Rise and Shadow all had the same sort of progression and story structure and most of them stuck to one location due to the unnecessary semi open world system those games have. And while the voice actress did a great job in the first game, she became kinda whiny in Rise and Shadow. :/
I hated the Legend trilogy because I wanted AOD to be completed, I didn't like the reboot. But with time, I was able to make peace with it and it grew on me. 2013 reboot is awesome, I think people hate it for the same reason as I hated Legend.
There are a lot of people who love the Legend trilogy, even among the die-hard Core fans. If only the developer were given more time to polish up each game to their deserved state, but that's the fate of Tomb Raider series since its beginning, isn't it.
The new TR games feel generic/ dumbed down to me also i feel new lara is waay to emotional instead of a badass. Imagine if Allen Ripley from the alien series kept crying and getting rattled every few scenes instead of taking charge under pressure.
I mean it was purely intentional to have her that way. By shadow she is the badass that most know her for. I enjoyed seeing her development over the three games. However I'll agree that they've been dumbed down immensely.
AOD is still the more loved TR, because it's the last Core Design game, the last "real" Lara Croft. AOD Lara is playable in Rise/ Shadow of the TR. Her outfit was chosen in the survey of Lara Croft Go. A remastered version of the game ll be crazy!!
fans don't love that game because is the last core's game. it's because this game is SUPERB, (in terms of the story) this game has loads and loads of potenital. tr legend introduced me in the franchise, after i discovered this game i got in love with it. so yea the gets a lot of love due of it's potential not because is the last game by core!
Turns out, Core wasn't really fired after AOD and their last TR game was a remake of Tomb Raider 1, aka TR anniversary edition. But they lost to Crystal Dynamics who was already riding on the success of TR Legend and their Anniversary version got the green light, nailing a final nail in the coffin for Core Design
TR AOD biggest problem was the time it was being released. Had it been developed and released in a broken manner in today's day and age, Core would have come up with patches upon patches and ultimately fixed it. It's unfair how Eidos forced them to develop Tomb Raider games on annual basis. Should've given them at least 3 years of development time. At the time time, Core Design is also responsible for their screw up.
I didn't like the modern tomb raider , but my opinion is changing and the concept of a realistic Lara is aging pretty well , honestly . Also , she's still badass in these new games , maybe the first one with the new style didn't make me feel that about her but the last one sure does

Angel of Darkness spoken about in 2019. Insta-liked! I honestly liked the game. 😂 Sure it was literally a game in beta stage because RUSHED BOI. It’s very nice that the game has an active modding community that pushes past that.
Man what a great MEMORY. I loved this game. It was extremely hard for me. I think I was stuck in the louvre for a week trying to figure out the combination of 3 symbols. I was 9. But does anyone remember the pointless shop ? I think it was down some snowy alleyway I remember saying why is this even a thing

I remember looking at them like if I was looking at futuristic stuff, I couldn't wait to put my hands on what I saw there - Lara finally looking like in PS1's FMVs, or her running with pistols without having to hold them upwards (even tho in the end she did)... I absolutely loved this game as a kid. I always had the feeling that I was playing something super edgy lol! It had a great atmosphere. This Lara had a great role model personality, she was educated, well-spoken, badass and super sexy at the same time. She felt really unique, I don't see that in the newer games.
I’m that one person who is obsessed with the originals, aod, anniversary-legend-underworld and Tomb Raider and Rise Of The Tomb Raider. I literally love all the games except the last one and I don’t care what other people think. They were all fun and good in their own way, yes my favorite TR game is Revelations cuz I grew up with the old Lara -even tho I was born in 2002 my mom played all of the older versions with me- and loved the egyptian themes the old games had, I still really liked all of the reboots (except the last one let’s not talk about that) Lara has always been nothing but a strong woman in every game and her characteristics only changed with the new reboots yes now I don’t like the new her as a character but the games are good

I loved AoD. The music was amazing (played by the London Orchestra), story was great (although rushed) and i loved the dark tone it had throughout. I really think if Core had a chance at a sequel it would've been amazing.
I was ready to fight thinking you were gonna talk sh*t about AoD but you speak the truth, it is such a special game to me and its one of my favourite games and it really deserves to be resurrected, fixed and ported to the PS4 💖
new lara is more human. she's younger. to be fearless she needed to experience trauma and survive. it's disturbing that the fans wanted her to be inhuman and become a toxic man right off the bat.

My godfather loved tomb raider and sadly passed away not long after this was released, its sad to know he couldn't experience the games after this one - yet is the only TR game I've not been able to finish
TR AOD is one of those games where I appreciate what they were trying to do, it’s just unfortunate the execution was terrible. I appreciate the dark gothic tones, the music was absolutely phenomenal, Jonell Elliot is my favorite VA, AOD Lara is my favorite model design, and using biblical elements was refreshing for the series. AOD was the first time I heard about nephilim for instance. I also have the demo disc and watched the trailer religiously, and had fun playing the Stuntman demo. Tho AOD was plagued with bugs, it felt like there were elements to the game missing, particularly her duel pistols but also plot points and levels even. I mean Lara talks to Karel like they’re familiar in the ending, but as far as we know that’s their first interaction. The bugs I encountered were fortunately never game breaking, and I found them hilarious even. Like this bug where you’re scaling the walls of the Louvre and Lara starts randomly floating into the sky as if she’s been raptured to heaven, but the duel pistol thing really irked me and I could never find the game shark I needed to fix that issue. Over all I did still enjoy the game, it definitely left some things to be desired tho.
Accurate. But the many flaws didn't dampen my love for the game, since the mood, music, and plot was so compelling. For me this was the final Tomb Raider game before the essence was crushed.
If they remade this game and made the reveal trailer an HD version of the intro cutscene where shes in von croys apartment and looks in the mirror im nutting
Angel Of Darkness was so underrated and didn't deserve it's dark reputation but I can understand; the glitches were so heavy and game breaking. But I loved the story concept; I wish the studio had been given the full time to finish it to completion so we could explore this trilogy. It's nice to know a Parallel Timeline exists where this game was fully made and polished and led by a trilogy is being enjoyed today by our parallel selves.
I just tried it again after so many years, holy shit it's worse than i remembered it I tried modding it but not even that saved it I played it originally on the PS2, the amount of times i was placed out of bounds (and softlocked in the process) after entering a zone or the game just crashed altogheter was amazing
Still my favorite Tomb Raider game! Totally love the dark thriller/horror atmosphere and the music is just outstanding 😍 playing the PS2 version again at the moment
Idk i was 12 and enjoyed the new look of games period. It was nice to see the outfit changes.My main issue was the camera angles and the controls. I had no idea that it was a glitch that was causing her to die in the most dramatic way. Still think TR 2 was the best out of the bunch.
I still adore exactly this game of all TR series, the plot was so cool, the dark mystery atmosphere, Kurtis character, some music themes. If only not the horrible controls... Still dissapointed that it never made into trilogy they planned.
I'm currently playing the old TR (1-3) and i fell that TR3 already lacked the ... Polish i would say. You do not have any big puzzles but have to find blocks to push around which look completly the same to all the wall textures around you so you basically have to push ACTION in front of every wall to find it. Then you have the "push button here" puzzles and that's it. TR4 was MUCH better but ... well you are only in Egypt so after a while you see the same "style" of level everytime.
I loved it even in it's unfinished state. The lore was so interesting and it tried something different. Still miles better than Legend Lara Barbie trilogy 😌
Underworld was fairly different, it looked more similar to the 2013 game, the game became more linear, reduced the movement options and overall turned into more of an adventure/action game rather than a platformer/puzzle This holds even more true for the PS3 version wich had even more enemies and other dangers per level

The only version that differed in design was the Wii version and the game is pretty much like legend but with MORE puzzles and open levels. The reboot on the other hand is a collectathon of crap and shooting segments and very far away from the core concept of TR.
@@IsidorTheNordicGuy It was on PS2 so maybe the game was just different there, but as far as i remember (since i tried it on PS3 on a friend's house) they removed a lot of the stunts you could perform after rolling (like infinite cartwheels, backwards cartwheels, etc) and they also removed a lot of the secret areas some levels had on top of making them shorter Now, as i said i'm talking of the PS2 version wich DID have some content removed, but i don't know how much I can safely say however, that Legend and Underworld on the PS2 where pretty different and legend had way more content (mostly in the form of skins and other unlockables)
@@rompevuevitos222 that is correct, the ps2 version is a VERY cut down version of TR underworld. I have it and every other version since it was to me thelast real TR game. Less TR than the classics but far more TR than any of the reboot games.
I think we just desperately need a ps4 remake of this game Same story but a little more It was a great game in my opinion it just needed less bugs and a bit more to the story
AoD was my first TR game because I was young and the PS2 was the first console I owned. Once I finished playing, I was unsatisfied. It definitely deserved better and if there was a game they could redo and make better, I'd love for it to be this one.
I really agree on the fact of how she ended up going from bad ass female bond to a "relatable" character who lost all real form of adventure. The main reason that the Tomb Raider series was profitable and enjoyable was what it brought to the table of gaming: An adventure with a character who couldn't be compared to whilst retaining a reasonably realistic plot. Tomb Raider Chronicles easily shows how Lara retains the capacity to form bonds with people ( the people mourning her death) and this was even brought up in Angel of darkness. However, Chronicles also shows how she is still the strong female protagonist who would break someones neck and not bat an eye. Angel of darkness was a good game in regards to plot and character interactions. Where Angel of darkness fell short was in the development and release. Content was cut, Game breaking bugs were left in, release was kept getting pushed back. In conclusion, Tomb raider Angel of darkness was a good game but had some issues.
Whatever, I loved the game when it came out and had a lot of fun with it. Sure it had bugs and some weird mechanics, but the story and the atmosphere was amazing
Did they ever explain how Lara survived Tomb Raider 4 (in game) ? As for Angel of Darkness my main memory was this dumb glitch in the museum level. Lara's boobs got stuck on a display case or some such object. However she didn't and no matter where I went in the level she was still anchored to the object by crazy stretched lady bits.

But I remember playing tomb raiders original 4 games growing up with my mother, then i also remember us two playing legend and angel of darkness. Up to legend is my favourite adventure because i never realized legend was a reboot as a kid :'). Angel of darkness does have its faults but i always remember parts of it fondly. Mostly the story xD. No comment on any game past legend. Ive only seen snippets of the 2013 onward reboot and. I didnt enjoy or like what i saw :') mostly cuz seeing her act that way felt weird, as i remembered her more like the original and legend version.
angel of darkness just makes me sad. there was so much potential behind it, and if core design had more time and wasnt pushed by edios to release it alongside the cradle of life movie, i think the game wouldve been alot better. there was more backstory to how lara survived tr4, more actions that kurtis could do but were cut due to the time constraints. the story is good and music is absolutely phenomenal, its so sad the controls let it down 😪😪
I recently purchased this game on steam, after not playing it for years and losing my old game disc. I forgot how buggy the controls were, but you get used to it. This game still saddens me because of "what could have been". It had everything going for it. Amazing new story, cool new Lara design but same badass personality. They really had some amazing ideas, but the execution was terrible. And the worst "what if" : if Core Design never failed with AOD, we would never had gotten all these reboots. Some of them weren't bad, I loved Legend, but the newest reboots just don't feel like Tomb Raider to me. It feels like some other game that they slapped the Tomb raider title on. The original Tomb Raider was always about isolation and exploration, where the newer ones are all about Lara's "First Kill" as if that should be at the forefront and what the whole series was about 🙄

All 3 of the recent tomb raiders are her origins story. As devs stated. A legend has to start somewhere and go through changes to make them what they are. The people we know and love.

It was only bugs and glitches that caused problems. Other than that, storyline, graphics were superb. If the team had taken more time to fix the bugs, it would've been vastly enjoyable upon release. Anyway, fans who saw past the bugs were able to enjoy it nonetheless. The cinematics are still spectacular to look at.
I actually like the new rebooted Tomb raider, yes she’s not the badass she once was (personality wise) but this is an origin story so she wasn’t supposed to be as badass, I feel like now this trilogy of games are done we might get a little closer to the original Lara.
People love to hate it, and as a result we keep getting these more generic 1 size fits all games. AOD for all its gameplay flaws did story, atmosphere, and level design masterfully. There’s no other tombraider like it. It’s like the Majora’s Mask of Zelda games.

Ripley has shown scenes of emotion, fear, loss. But she still tanked through it like a badass.

I absolutely loved this game as a kid. I always had the feeling that I was playing something super edgy lol! It had a great atmosphere. This Lara had a great role model personality, she was educated, well-spoken, badass and super sexy at the same time. She felt really unique, I don't see that in the newer games.

I’m that one person who is obsessed with the originals, aod, anniversary-legend-underworld and Tomb Raider and Rise Of The Tomb Raider. I literally love all the games except the last one and I don’t care what other people think. They were all fun and good in their own way, yes my favorite TR game is Revelations cuz I grew up with the old Lara -even tho I was born in 2002 my mom played all of the older versions with me- and loved the egyptian themes the old games had, I still really liked all of the reboots (except the last one let’s not talk about that) Lara has always been nothing but a strong woman in every game and her characteristics only changed with the new reboots yes now I don’t like the new her as a character but the games are good

I loved AoD. The music was amazing (played by the London Orchestra), story was great (although rushed) and i loved the dark tone it had throughout. I really think if Core had a chance at a sequel it would've been amazing.

I wish they would give TR the Megaman 9 treatment where we get an entirely new, full game but using the old style game engine, with all of the benefits of everything we've learned in the past 20 years. I think it would be amazing.
My godfather loved tomb raider and sadly passed away not long after this was released, its sad to know he couldn't experience the games after this one - yet is the only TR game I've not been able to finish
TR AOD is one of those games where I appreciate what they were trying to do, it’s just unfortunate the execution was terrible. I appreciate the dark gothic tones, the music was absolutely phenomenal, Jonell Elliot is my favorite VA, AOD Lara is my favorite model design, and using biblical elements was refreshing for the series. AOD was the first time I heard about nephilim for instance. I also have the demo disc and watched the trailer religiously, and had fun playing the Stuntman demo.
Tho AOD was plagued with bugs, it felt like there were elements to the game missing, particularly her duel pistols but also plot points and levels even. I mean Lara talks to Karel like they’re familiar in the ending, but as far as we know that’s their first interaction. The bugs I encountered were fortunately never game breaking, and I found them hilarious even. Like this bug where you’re scaling the walls of the Louvre and Lara starts randomly floating into the sky as if she’s been raptured to heaven, but the duel pistol thing really irked me and I could never find the game shark I needed to fix that issue.
Over all I did still enjoy the game, it definitely left some things to be desired tho.
Accurate. But the many flaws didn't dampen my love for the game, since the mood, music, and plot was so compelling. For me this was the final Tomb Raider game before the essence was crushed.
TR AoD was for a long time my favorite TR Game. It´s really sad, that so many people never saw the beauty of this game.

Angel Of Darkness was so underrated and didn't deserve it's dark reputation but I can understand; the glitches were so heavy and game breaking.
But I loved the story concept; I wish the studio had been given the full time to finish it to completion so we could explore this trilogy.
It's nice to know a Parallel Timeline exists where this game was fully made and polished and led by a trilogy is being enjoyed today by our parallel selves.
Lara's screams are on another level in this game. The screams when she lands in the trash can is frightening

I played it originally on the PS2, the amount of times i was placed out of bounds (and softlocked in the process) after entering a zone or the game just crashed altogheter was amazing

Idk i was 12 and enjoyed the new look of games period. It was nice to see the outfit changes.My main issue was the camera angles and the controls. I had no idea that it was a glitch that was causing her to die in the most dramatic way. Still think TR 2 was the best out of the bunch.

I still adore exactly this game of all TR series, the plot was so cool, the dark mystery atmosphere, Kurtis character, some music themes. If only not the horrible controls... Still dissapointed that it never made into trilogy they planned.
I'm currently playing the old TR (1-3) and i fell that TR3 already lacked the ... Polish i would say. You do not have any big puzzles but have to find blocks to push around which look completly the same to all the wall textures around you so you basically have to push ACTION in front of every wall to find it. Then you have the "push button here" puzzles and that's it. TR4 was MUCH better but ... well you are only in Egypt so after a while you see the same "style" of level everytime.
They should remake Angel of Darkness as they remade Tomb Raider to Anniversary (as Anniversary is undeniably the best Tomb Raider game there is).
My TR AoD obsession reached tattoo levels and a self made notebook that contains all the plot lmao. I love how much people still love this.
I loved it even in it's unfinished state. The lore was so interesting and it tried something different. Still miles better than Legend Lara Barbie trilogy 😌
Anniversary and Legends Lara was good. I never played Underworld though so I can't speak for that one.
She was pretty much like legend Lara
Underworld was fairly different, it looked more similar to the 2013 game, the game became more linear, reduced the movement options and overall turned into more of an adventure/action game rather than a platformer/puzzle
This holds even more true for the PS3 version wich had even more enemies and other dangers per level
@@rompevuevitos222 what the hell are you on about? Completely false information. Underworld was the same on x360, ps3 and pc. The only version that differed in design was the Wii version and the game is pretty much like legend but with MORE puzzles and open levels. The reboot on the other hand is a collectathon of crap and shooting segments and very far away from the core concept of TR.
@@IsidorTheNordicGuy It was on PS2 so maybe the game was just different there, but as far as i remember (since i tried it on PS3 on a friend's house) they removed a lot of the stunts you could perform after rolling (like infinite cartwheels, backwards cartwheels, etc) and they also removed a lot of the secret areas some levels had on top of making them shorter
Now, as i said i'm talking of the PS2 version wich DID have some content removed, but i don't know how much
I can safely say however, that Legend and Underworld on the PS2 where pretty different and legend had way more content (mostly in the form of skins and other unlockables)
@@rompevuevitos222 that is correct, the ps2 version is a VERY cut down version of TR underworld. I have it and every other version since it was to me thelast real TR game. Less TR than the classics but far more TR than any of the reboot games.

AoD was my first TR game because I was young and the PS2 was the first console I owned. Once I finished playing, I was unsatisfied. It definitely deserved better and if there was a game they could redo and make better, I'd love for it to be this one.

I really agree on the fact of how she ended up going from bad ass female bond to a "relatable" character who lost all real form of adventure. The main reason that the Tomb Raider series was profitable and enjoyable was what it brought to the table of gaming: An adventure with a character who couldn't be compared to whilst retaining a reasonably realistic plot. Tomb Raider Chronicles easily shows how Lara retains the capacity to form bonds with people ( the people mourning her death) and this was even brought up in Angel of darkness. However, Chronicles also shows how she is still the strong female protagonist who would break someones neck and not bat an eye. Angel of darkness was a good game in regards to plot and character interactions. Where Angel of darkness fell short was in the development and release. Content was cut, Game breaking bugs were left in, release was kept getting pushed back. In conclusion, Tomb raider Angel of darkness was a good game but had some issues.

As for Angel of Darkness my main memory was this dumb glitch in the museum level. Lara's boobs got stuck on a display case or some such object. However she didn't and no matter where I went in the level she was still anchored to the object by crazy stretched lady bits.

But I remember playing tomb raiders original 4 games growing up with my mother, then i also remember us two playing legend and angel of darkness. Up to legend is my favourite adventure because i never realized legend was a reboot as a kid :').
Angel of darkness does have its faults but i always remember parts of it fondly. Mostly the story xD.
No comment on any game past legend. Ive only seen snippets of the 2013 onward reboot and. I didnt enjoy or like what i saw :') mostly cuz seeing her act that way felt weird, as i remembered her more like the original and legend version.
angel of darkness just makes me sad. there was so much potential behind it, and if core design had more time and wasnt pushed by edios to release it alongside the cradle of life movie, i think the game wouldve been alot better. there was more backstory to how lara survived tr4, more actions that kurtis could do but were cut due to the time constraints. the story is good and music is absolutely phenomenal, its so sad the controls let it down 😪😪

I recently purchased this game on steam, after not playing it for years and losing my old game disc. I forgot how buggy the controls were, but you get used to it. This game still saddens me because of "what could have been". It had everything going for it. Amazing new story, cool new Lara design but same badass personality. They really had some amazing ideas, but the execution was terrible. And the worst "what if" : if Core Design never failed with AOD, we would never had gotten all these reboots. Some of them weren't bad, I loved Legend, but the newest reboots just don't feel like Tomb Raider to me. It feels like some other game that they slapped the Tomb raider title on. The original Tomb Raider was always about isolation and exploration, where the newer ones are all about Lara's "First Kill" as if that should be at the forefront and what the whole series was about 🙄
Yeah I got it on steam too but the controls are a horrible mess on PC lol. I think the PC port was really rushed but I can't remember

All 3 of the recent tomb raiders are her origins story. As devs stated. A legend has to start somewhere and go through changes to make them what they are. The people we know and love.
They're confirmed several times she's a different Lara.
Her "story" contradicts the backstories of both previous continuties.

not really since they had to re-write the background of her. Also Lara did already go on an adventure with her Mentor Werner von Croy and this is not mentioned anywhere in the new games :) so it's a complete new lara

A spin-off series about Kurtis Trent would be cool, who knows maybe it could be as iconic as Uncharted.
It was only bugs and glitches that caused problems. Other than that, storyline, graphics were superb. If the team had taken more time to fix the bugs, it would've been vastly enjoyable upon release. Anyway, fans who saw past the bugs were able to enjoy it nonetheless. The cinematics are still spectacular to look at.

I actually like the new rebooted Tomb raider, yes she’s not the badass she once was (personality wise) but this is an origin story so she wasn’t supposed to be as badass, I feel like now this trilogy of games are done we might get a little closer to the original Lara.

People love to hate it, and as a result we keep getting these more generic 1 size fits all games. AOD for all its gameplay flaws did story, atmosphere, and level design masterfully. There’s no other tombraider like it. It’s like the Majora’s Mask of Zelda games.
