@@TransformotionVR had a mk1 escort with 2.0ltr pinto in it and it looked metallic each oil change but never let me down, they are old engines now and will have wear on them and probably not made to same tolerances as new motors are now, smoke it about for a while and check oil again, also capris look cool without spoiler and front bumper, good luck mate
Love the video! please talk to a older ford mechanic all these Old Ford’s had a flickering gauge . Try a test gauge on the engine first, plus if that was the first oil change maybe there would be some metallic particles in the oil. Run the engine in gently then drop the oil again and see if it improves. The engine doesn’t have a bottom end rattle just a tappet that needs checking again, try the rule of thirteen when rechecking them. Good luck you have a lovely classic there!!
Been watching with interest, having owned three V6 capris, your problem lies with a worn crankshaft and main bearings, I had exactly the same low pressure reading, after getting the engine reconditioned with a re ground crank and oversize shells the oil pressure needle returned to the upper part of the gauge and solved the issue, hope this helps.
Loads I’ve had in the past have sat just about the red when warm at idle . I wouldn’t be overly worried as it is goes bang your no worse off. The 2.9 would require some work to fit but nice if not really much of an upgrade. The v8 is awesome .. I’ve got a 3.9 in mine . Hi, looking at your oil pressure gauge it looks normal to me, as you rev the engine the needle moves up that’s normal & fine As the oil gets to operating temp the oil is thinner, oil pressure drops, & usually sits above the red mark on tickover. Looks fine to me, both my 2.8s do just that. The engine seems fine to me. Cheers
Yes the oil looks like it has possibly fuel in it… you could smell fuel when you unbolted the oil gauge pipe. ?? My 2.8 had the same issue a few years ago, constantly starting & starting it & not firing. Found petrol in the oil, fresh oil sores out the starting issues & all was/is well
Change the oil filter,it will be saturated with metallic debris causing low pressure at idle, all 2.8 v6 that i have had (granadas and capris)have all shown similar oil pressure readings that you have and covered many thousand of miles with no issues.
Thanks man, I've changed the filter too now and it's still the same, I've got a pressure gauge to test it properly to see what it reads. I'm more concerned about the colour of the oil 🤮
I feel for you, I run older stuff and have had a massive headache with an electrical problem on a Primera GT. It had given up the ghost but of course no one would have known it was there.
Love the capri content..definitely dont think that engine is game over, check filter for metal chips, that will answer a lot..to me looked like oil with petroleum dilution…id keep going on this if i was you..but the 2.9 sounds good too. Love the content
Thanks bud! I've opened the filter afterwards and there was not significant chunks but did have a lot of metallic paste in the lid bit, and it's only covered 3 or 4 miles 😬
tough one to swallow - work out what the car could be worth with a New engine and put back to almost original condition - would be a great rebuild ( like Matts RR ) also great video again Guys.
Maybe look at bottom end rebuild and replace oil pump as that’s probably worn too,oil was due to the fact of petrol contamination from trying to start all those times I’d stick with the 2.8 lump and the k jetronic injection keep it all oem
The sheen in the oil is probably petrol because of all the starting problems I’d check that gauge too it looks weird moving about like it does try installing a different one direct to the engine see what it says but to be honest I’ve had loads of cars back in the day that hardly showed oil pressure at all on tick over I just ignored it 😂 I suspect you want that other engine in though if that’s the case go for it
I had a 2.8 that was rebuilt many years ago and that oil gauge used to bounce up and down until it went bang. We stripped it down and turned out to be a few problems. That engine needs new piston rings, rod/main bearings, and a new oil pump. It's a question of whether it's worth the cost. Alternatively a used replacement engine is a gamble and that could also be knackered.
Needs to heat up maybe… longer journeys…. Fuel build up in the oil is down to short journeys, not enough heat to evaporate it, so oil smells of petrol. Low pressure down to worn rings ? Have to say sounds ok-ish… run it til it goes pop then fix it up back to standard would be my plan 👍
Did you check the filter to see if there is metal in it, or run the bucket through a gauze to see if its got metal in it, could it be petrol in the oil? As you said the oil pressure gauge pipe smelt of petrol
as far as i know as long as there ant big chucks of metal thats just bed in sheen. if new rings and bearings its good, but you could also buy a smashed mustang and do a complete swap, wires modules everything plus that 5.0 v8 coyote, may have to cut a bigger tunnel but a bit of fab work, she would be a peach. You might be being a bit premature with the diagnosis. I had a couple of capris and seem to recall the oil pressure at idle does go low and although near the red, it isn't in it and when reved up, it rises to around half so about where it should be. I'm pretty sure there were two warning lights on the dash that came on with the ignition and went out so could be an oil warning light anyway but to me, that gauge for a 40 year old gauge was probably normal.
It's more the colour of the oil that has me concerned, these too much metallic in it, the engine builders have said the same. I've got an oil pressure tester now so I'll se what that says
Maybe put a known working oil pressure gauge on it. Send an oil sample away for testing. Take the oil filter off and have a look inside it. I can't believe you are giving up on this so early. If there is fuel in the oil then maybe you have a stuck open injector. You guys are mechanics, maybe pull the motor and strip it down.
The engine sounds good but the pressure shouldn’t be that low. The 2.9 sounds the best route, buying the v8 would just be the startbof your costs. P.S I always like to clean my hands with an old pair of undies too.
Ive got the 2.9 24v in my Capri. I wouldnt recommend it. The 12v is certainly a better option. Many many reasons why, but the main one for me (after years of ballache) is the 24v ecu is looking for an autobox so of you go manual it will try and stall every time you push the clutch in amd revs drop. The only way to stop it foing it is to wait until revs get down to 1k then push clutch in, which gets annoying
The oil gauge looks suss, it's fluctuating when there should be very little fluctuation normally and at idle the oil pressure obviously drops, that's why it's looking so low. Change the gauge first, it's a cheap swap and could save an engine swap. If you want a faster engine, convert it to a turbo technics conversion, it gives over 200hp. The 2.8 injection cologne engine is a sturdy, reliable unit, the Bosch K-jetronic fuel system is the same as the Audi Quattro ffs!
Remember its a classic, without massive investment and mods its not going to drive handle stop or go like a modern car, don't trust the stock oil pressure gauge, the fact its surging tells me its either toast or there is air in the line, stock 2.8 motors fairly strong, just make it work and enjoy the car for what it is really, great car and enjoying the series on it but if it were me (and its not) I would be trying to keep it as close to original as I could and just enjoy it
I know man, ive got an oil pressure tester here now so I'll be on with that soon, my main concern now is the way the oil looked, it's only done 5 miles since the oil went in, ive debated rebuilding this engine on the channel as it'd be the cheapest option I think
They were always a crap engine. Why not do something a bit different. Try picking up a 3.0 Jaguar S type or Xj6 for a few hundred quid and swap that into it. There's loads been put in Mx5's, so the swap shouldn't be too difficult. And with a tweak or 2, you can get 250 bhp quite easily. Great content as well. Enjoy 👍
I'm not sure on these old engines, was the 2.9 24v the cosworth? The one I'm looking at is the 12v. But if money was no object it'd definitely have an old v8 in it
I'm actully debating weather to just rebuild this engine on the channel as it could get costly to do and engine conversion and I don't know how good the 2.9 is, he said he's checked it and it fine but I don't know him to trust
@@TransformotionVR yeah I get that and it would be more fun but i would rather put it back to standard somewhat as there’s not many left and it would be worth more in the future.
I'd change the engine. I can tell you know the engine is gone. Too much work and money to put in. Get the Granada engine if you cant afford a V8 but if you can get and fit it get the V8. It'll sound boss too
16:04 If my mate asked me to sniff his sticky fingers, I'd be off in a shot ! Each to their own though. Whatever you decide to do, and if that's the original engine in the car, keep it (whether in the car or not). Originality is worth a lot if ever you or any future owner wants to do an engine rebuild & to put it back to original.
Use that engine, if it goes bang get new to you engine, if it doesn't go bang you can adjust your worry gauge. Metallic oil is ok, if the oil ways and galleries weren't cleaned when the engine was rebuilt the oil the previous owner put in might have more detergent in it than what was common bitd, TLDR, modern oil has cleaned 30+ years of grime out of the oil ways. Get it MOT'd and use it, using it will tell you far more than snippets of second guessing everything, it's not that precious, there's plenty more engines in the sea.
such a shame most capri's were rot box's and have rotted away they were such a cool looking car i loved my 2.8 injection till some ducktard broke into my garage and stole it... was gutted it was a minter just under 75k original miles...
Too many question marks. Bent crankshaft, worn journals, wrong bearings, bent rods. Engine strip, inspection and professional rebuild will probably cost more than the other engine but what condition is that one in. Coming out of a Granada it probably hasn't been thrashed as hard as a Capri but you never really know. The petrol smell at the oil pressure gauge could be an older legacy. If the oil was, at some time, diluted with petrol the density would have decreased and the thinner oil would migrate to the highest point , which is in this case (I think) , the junction between the oil pressure gauge and the feed pipe. Whatever decision you make you don't want to be forced into doing it yet again. Take a step back, talk to people, investigate all of your options and then decide.
Spoken like a true wise man! Well said mate, im gonna take the oil to an engine builder, if he says its knackered then I'll go with his call, that oil was only 3-4 miles old
There's loads of comments below. I will just say it was a sad video for you. Either way it's going to be ££ & more £. Shame. You had high hope in the beginning for it's revival. I've got a propper testing gauge now so I'll see what that says, and it has fresh oil so we'll see if that goes silvery
I've got an oil pressure tester now so I'll see what that says but it's the metallic look in the oil that has me more worried
Todays Special.. Steel Soup !
Ha ha 😂 it smelt lovely too
The 70's Ford Capri had foolproof GEAR timing. No timing chain, or worse yet, a belt.
Why aren't all cars like that!? Ha ha
Are you 100% sure the bucket was clean before dropping the oil into it mate? Just a shot in the dark
Enjoy 👍
Big ends or mains wear. 🤷🏻♂️
It's done 3ish miles on fresh oil to make it look like that 😬
ill put a 2.9 granny in it be the same as a cosworth then
The 2.9 cossie was not the same as the sierra one though was it? I only really know capri's. But still a good move. But V8...
I'm not sure on these old engines, was the 2.9 24v the cosworth? The one I'm looking at is the 12v. But if money was no object it'd definitely have an old v8 in it
I genuinely feel sorry for you mate
Thanks man, it's crap but not the end of the world....ill get it sorted don't you worry ha ha
V8!!!
Id love to! I need deeper pockets tho
time to say goodbye put youre money into something else mate the old one’s just eat it ❤
2.9i all the way. Don’t bother with the V8. You can spin the wheels with the old engine which couldn’t be putting out anything near stock
I'm actully debating weather to just rebuild this engine on the channel as it could get costly to do and engine conversion and I don't know how good the 2.9 is, he said he's checked it and it fine but I don't know him to trust
Rover SD1 V8 with manual gearbox if that`s the way you`re going.
Oh you beauty
I think they're in 90% of v8 conversion them ha ha
I would put capri 2.8 back in
How come? 🤔 the 2.9 has more power
@@TransformotionVR yeah I get that and it would be more fun but i would rather put it back to standard somewhat as there’s not many left and it would be worth more in the future.
Id engine swap a jaguar 4.2 supercharged from a s type r
How much do they go for?
I'd change the engine. I can tell you know the engine is gone. Too much work and money to put in. Get the Granada engine if you cant afford a V8 but if you can get and fit it get the V8. It'll sound boss too
Saab Turbo engine
Id prefer somthing old that doesn't require an ecu so it's easier to swap
16:04 If my mate asked me to sniff his sticky fingers, I'd be off in a shot ! Each to their own though.
Whatever you decide to do, and if that's the original engine in the car, keep it (whether in the car or not). Originality is worth a lot if ever you or any future owner wants to do an engine rebuild & to put it back to original.
It's not an original car mate, the shell is a 1.6 laser, so originality isn't important with this, it's just a cool car ha ha
Capri or crapi you choose
It's definitely a crapi at the minute
Old skool ford 302 lighter ,better faster .my friend had one in the 80s mental such great fun ,ford ford ford all the way bro6
If I could find one cheap enough it'd be sick but I'd imagine it'd cost a few grand by the time it's in the car
Buy a cheap st and drive train swap it stop messing about now lads 😂😂😂 😉😉😉😉
Like Ben at Tasty Classics you mean?
@MarkB-33 not sure tbh not heard of him but would sound and drive awsome
@@Twistandgoukcheck out Tasty Classics its a great channel and he is a good bloke.
I do love the st 5 pot noise, but itd have to be rwd so I'd have to look how to adapt it. Is that was tastey classics classics is doing MarkB?
yeh it needs a v8
Id love one! Just can't afford it at the minute
shame really lad but ild put the grandad in it next video please
The 2.9 grananda engine?
@@TransformotionVR yes las deffo
lad
such a shame most capri's were rot box's and have rotted away they were such a cool looking car i loved my 2.8 injection till some ducktard broke into my garage and stole it... was gutted it was a minter just under 75k original miles...
That's a shame man! You can't have nothing can you! Did you see our last video?! They're everywhere...
Well said mate, im gonna take the oil to an engine builder, if he says its knackered then I'll go with his call, that oil was only 3-4 miles old
what a moneypit
I've not put that much into it tbh maye
That's one really dodgy gauge, even with low pressure, should not be bouncing around like that
My dad said that, I dont know with these old cars
V8
😁😁😁
That Capri is begging you to let it die.
That would be a shame. I like it. Real road warrior look. Time for an engine swap. V8?
It definitely seems that way!
There's loads of comments below. I will just say it was a sad video for you. Either way it's going to be ££ & more £. Shame. You had high hope in the beginning for it's revival. If and when it gets back to your driveway. Take the battery off. To save it's life at least. See you in the next one. Cheers from Prescot.
Not what I wanted really, I could do without spending ha ha
The engine that thing sounds fucked tapping along like old worn out taxi engine
Take the Capri to Copart and move on.
Ha ha they wouldn't take it 🤣 it'd need to go on a capri forum
There's other things to spend your money. it's sitting there doing nothing.
Capri mate. Fantastic cars and worth the investment.
Id be driving it if it worked ha ha
V8 swap it
Id love to, my pockets aren't deep enough tho 🤣
