Ah I hear great things about the GR86. For me I had manual but as I get older with kids and having arthritis and gout, I opted for a fun auto (or DCT). Also depends if he wants RWD vs FWD. But out the box this is a capable track car as well (and I know a few who track their KN). But to answer the question it really depends on his preference is with the take aways above!

It should not void it when I bought my Genesis coupe they said you can do cat back now this guy being in Ca. it illegal there its an aftermarket system that is not carb approved so it may be considered an off road only setup but on the street chances are its a fix it ticket.

Yes, it'll be valved which is great especially in CA hah. But should be similar to the VN ATAK cat-back in terms of sound and features.
