- Whats better a Cold Cut Saw or an Abrasive saw for cutting metal? In this video I review my SteelMax Metal Cutting Chop Saw and put it up against an Abrasive Chop Saw and see which one does better. There's a bunch of different ways to cut metal let's check out a couple of them!

I bought a Milwaukee dry cut saw when they first came out. Or at least they weren’t very popular yet. Anyway I’ve since given all my abrasive saws away! The other thing about a carbide blade that I think really makes it superior is how straight they cut compared to an abrasive blade. It’s no contest!
I’d have to agree. I don’t even use our abrasive saw anymore. I’d noticed that too with the abrasive blades that the cut would seem to walk sometimes and wouldn’t end up being very straight. I love my dry cut saw and wouldn’t ever go back to the abrasive one unless I had to. Hope all is going well in your neck of the woods!
@@LuthiRanchWY They walk bc they have nothing to keep them in line. An abrasive wheel is not something that is meant to hold a cut. IDK why they even made abrasive saws but it is what it is. You cant make a straight cut with one unless youre super experienced. With this saw anyone of any skill level can make a straight cut with safety in mind.
The best test I have seen as yet
I have the same chop saw Steelman S14 and also have the abrasive type saw as well. the drawback of abrasive leaves metal burrs and metal blades is clean cut but 10-15 times the cost of the abrasive blade.
I forgot how much I hate using my abrasive saw until I watched your video. I’m going to bite the bullet and buy a different chop saw. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Appreciate it
You are welcome! You won’t regret buying a saw like this. I have loved mine and wouldn’t ever go back to an abrasive saw.
There's a guy here on TH-cam that used a plug-in-play fan speed controller off Amazon. He plugged it through to his abrasive chop saw, fitting a metal cutting carbide blade, dialed down the speed and chopped up the pipes with no issues. Just make sure you have the right arbour size blade and but the $30 controller.

Thanks for the video. I have a DeWalt cold saw and a really old Makita abrasive saw. I still use them both. Carbide blade for speed wins hands down. My abrasive saw I like because I can make free hand cuts without the vice. For the older low hp abrasive saw Sait makes some thin kerf blades that cut a little faster. They wear out quick but work better than others brands.

I liked the Diablo blade but found it became blunt very quickly and have reluctantly gone back to an abrasive disc which, apart from the disadvantages you mentioned is also very messy in a small shop. I had the Diablo re-sharpened and tried cutting oil but the same occurred . This was annoying as I had bought the saw because it was the only one I could find here in New Zealand with a slow enough rotation rate for the dry cut blade.
BTW your a hard man if you drive a Deutz without a cab in that weather!
Haha I do love our Deutz! Just wish it had a cab on it. I’ve felt like I’ve had pretty good longevity with my Diablo blades, they are expensive to replace though. Have you tried a different brand of blade? I would have a hard time going back to and abrasive saw! Where in New Zealand are you from? I spent a month there hitchhiking around and camping out when I was a bit younger
Hey Bryan, I have a Steel Max also and really like it too. I still have the old abrasive saw but it has so much dirt and cob webs on it that it would be hard to find..LOL Our water turned on the 15th and its been raining off and on for the past several days...go figure. Hope your weather is cooperating and making your feeding easier. Good post.
Thanks! I’ve loved my SteelMax saw. Our abrasive saw is about the same haha I just pulled it out for this video and I don’t think we’ve used it since I bought my SteelMax. We’ve been rainy and snowy here the last couple weeks so things are really muddy right now. Most the snow is gone though just a few patches here and there. How’s the grass looking with this rain you guys have been getting?

I can’t recommend these dry cut saws enough
i bought into evolution metal saw and found it too expensive per cut, where i might get 50 cuts on a $20,$30 blade, all while spitting hot chips and shreiking at me. I retired that in favor of angle grinders and abrasive wheels, which also lightened my tooling inventory and shortened my setup time
You had a much different experience with dry cut saws than I did. I have loved mine and would never go back to an Abrasive saw
Definitely was using cheap blades. Most of the evolution brand blades go for 80 bucks

I am cutting 3/4 solid square stock and after 27 cuts it dead does anyone have any advice I’m using 7 1/4” blades on chop saw
What type of blade are you using?
I’m curious, can one of those Diablo cutting blades work on a Milwaukee abrasive saw? Is the steel max geared lower to use the Diablo dry cut blades?

Thanks for watching. These dry cut saw blades will NOT work in an abrasive saw, they spin at too high of an RPM. These blades are made to be used with a dry cut saw which has lower RPMs
The "Best Tool" for cutting metal/wood or anithing else.. is the tool you have and use. what it is the fastest.. hmmm, that's another thing.
Hi, I make free standing corral pannels out of 2 7/8 pipe the only problem is cutting the pipe. I have an abrasive saw and that works but I don’t like it. When I was going to buy a dry cut chop saw I was told not to because old oil rod pipe can be damaged and be very tuff to cut through. Looking for options on what to buy to be able to cut it. Thanks!
I build free standing pannels also. I’ve built mine out of 2 3/8” pipe and I only use my dry cut saw to cut it and I’ve loved it. The blades are kind of expensive to replace but I seem to get between 200-300 cuts out of one.
What happen if u put the same diablo blade to the Milwaukee chop saw ?🤔
Not sure. Just be careful with your RPMS. My SteelMax RPMs are 1450 so it spins alot slower than a abrasive saw

I've never gotten close to that many cuts. Cutting 2-3/8 and 2-7/8.
How have you slowed that chop saw down to use that Diablo blade.
I didn’t slow it down these dry cut saws have a lower rpm in general compared to abrasive saws
Can you just replace the abrasive blade on the old saw with the metal Diablo blade?
No, because the two saws run at different RPM’s. The Diablo blade runs at much lower RPM’s, if you ran it at the speed of an Abrasive blade it might come apart and hurt someone.

Big comolaint of abrasives is rhe walk, they hardly cut atraight. How square is the cut using this dry cut with diablo blade?
You can get a very straight cut. The blades rigid enough that you can take off blade widths at a time
Agree with you on the dry cut saws, very nice.
When our blades get worn we have the carbide teeth replaced regather than replacing the blade.
Thought I would mention that don’t know if you have tried it before.
Thanks for mentioning that, I’ve heard of people replacing the teeth but I’ve never had it done. Where do you send it off to do that? And about how much does it cost?
@@LuthiRanchWY I love my dry cut saw too. You can take the blades to Evergreen Wood Products in Etna. It takes a couple of weeks but they can be sharpened for a fraction of the cost. I have multiple blades so I can switch to a sharp blade while the other one is getting sharpened.
@@bryanmiller5584 I didn’t know they did that there! I’ll have to take some of mine over there and see how they turn out. I’ve kept a few old ones.
@@LuthiRanchWY they don't actually do it there. There's a sharpening service that makes the rounds dropping off sharp blades and picking up the dull ones. Mostly for contractors. High quality miter saw blades are even more expensive.

The shop is a 40’ by 50’. It came as a kit. My dad and grandpa put it up before I was born.
