  • After being hammered by squid off EHN last trip we decided to head further south. Unfortunately the squid seem to be far and wide as our baits kept coming up destroyed. We persisted and on the 3rd drop caught a hungry Blue-eye Trevalla on a strip of frost fish well off the bottom.
Drop 6 saw us come tight. A subtle bite but solid weight, which had us thinking it could be a sword to start with.
The fish worked up to the surface and after about 30 mins we got a visual of a solid Bluefin Tuna. Being circle hooked in the jaw this fish put up a decent scrap and took some manoeuvring to get boat side. Secured, we got a tag in and back down to the deep it went. If you noticed it had 2 tags; the first shot was an oopsie-daisy so we stuck another in. It was not a previously tagged fish. Estimated to be around 100-110kg and a PB for the angler. Operation tag and release a sword for 2022 continues... maybe next time. Thanks for watching! ‪@itswizza‬ Instagram: @itswizza

Haha. Especially this time of year 🤣 Caught a few swords now and this bite was very subtle, unlike all the other Tuna we've caught down deep. They normally hit like a freight train. Had us fooled for a bit. Love surprises, keeps it exciting!

How deep did you hook that tuna?

We were targeting swordfish in 500-550m. The brick came off prematurely in about 400-450m. Seen as we were most of the way down we left the bait and we got a hookup. Have caught around 7 big Tuna in these depths now.. fascinating considering the usual method is to troll lures on the surface.

@@itswizza cool by-catch for sure! Do you have depth marks on our line or just guessing?
I’m still after my first sword off Nauru, is the 500m-550m your target depth based on experience and or marking fish or scatter layer on the sounder?
I get a heap of pomfret here in 400-450m and wondering if going deeper might help avoid them.

@@adammcgeorge3538 the line does change colour every 10m, which i only find useful in the later part of the fight as i know what colour goes onto the topshot.
We watched the brick go down on the sounder so could estimate pretty accurately what depth we lost it.
450-550m is our usual target depth for swords based on expierence. Some times shallower or deeper depending on how much the squid are hammering our baits, if they are only lasting 15mins like we have experienced latley we try to find ground where we can actually keep a bait down there.

@@itswizza I see. We seldom have any squid near our bait, so that is not an issue for us.
Do you mark any swords or scatter layer on your sounder?

@@adammcgeorge3538 yeah we do mark fish when stationary, but we dont motor around waiting to mark one and then drop. We look more for scatter around where we want to drop and hope there's one near by.
