  • With not too many weather windows offered to us over our April holidays, we've been impatiently waiting to hit the shelf again and i guess you could say we made up for lost time!
Feeling pretty weary after 3 days fishing the Tom Jenkins Bluefin Tuna Comp, I wasn't about to give up the chance to drop some baits in exchange for sleep. Make hay while the sun shines as they say and if the weather says fish, we fish.
When it comes to Swording, most days are donuts or you're hoping for that one bite to stick. Yesterday was an insanely different story and and we got served!
Drop 1: tag & released a Bluefin Tuna, est 70-75kg.
    Drop 2: untouched.
Drop 3: set the hook on a good Swordfish. It came out of the water a few times and spat the hook on the last jump about 50m from the boat. Unfortunate.
Drop 4: tag & released another Bluefin Tuna, a good 10kg heavier than the first.
...You know the pattern by now.
Drop 5: A smaller but spirited Swordfish that tested my tiring body. After 1hr 40, we had it boat side, got a tag in and pushed it back down. It looked a promising dive but popped back to the surface. We swam it again for longer but unfortunately it just couldn't go. With no time to rest, it took one more big effort to get it in the boat and we headed in to start the cleaning process.
    Fish estimated weight, 160kg.
5 drops for 4 big fish is an unbelievable gift and a day we will never forget. Enjoy the ride! Thanks for watching! @itswizza :)

    Well done guys. Big day!
Are you fishing for swords and tuna using same rigs and location?
Any difference between how you fish for them?

Tuna are our "by-catch". We are targeting swords, but late into the drift, if it comes up too high in the water column, this is where/when we tend to hook the Tuna.

A short meat hook may help you guys on the boating mission.(no wonder you wanted to release the fish ;)
Is there any venting of a sword that can be done to help them get back down to the depths?
The last bait was a squid, what were the chunks you used on the earlier drops?
Great day and good teamwork you two…need to get the dog on the pulley rope next time ;)

Thanks for the advice. We might try head first next time we have to. We try to release whenever we can, but sometimes it just doesn't work out. We have asked a few seasoned fishers if there is anything we can do to vent them like you can smaller fish, but the only suggestion so far is to swim them for longer. We swam this one for quite a while, but death by Mako would have been a worse result so we got on with it 😔
The other bait was Tuna belly flap.

During the lifting stage, you hear Brody say "just be stronger" and my response is a sarcastic giggle 😂 Sure, ok. I'll somehow magically do that. Haha

@@itswizza I’ve not caught a sword, but the air bladder on marlin is like large size bubble wrap, made up of lots of individual bubbles, so I don’t think unless you popped them all that you could vent one successfully, but I’ve not tried. Is the air bladder in a sword similar to that?
I guess you have to weigh up how long you swim them vs how long it takes to get them in the boat ;)
I must confess I’ve probably said similar things to my wife when asking her to help lift things like a man :( she blames all her aches and pains on me :(

@@itswizza many would say that tuna belly flap is much too nice to be a sword bait, or tuna bait in your case ;)

@adammcgeorge3538 haha. Funny you say, i fished a Tuna Comp with Seamaster the 3 days prior. I wanted the belly flaps for baits.. needless to say, I got some wide-eye looks 😳🤣

your block and tackle needs re rigging all the lines should run straight so you get a even pull on the lines nice fish and to good to let it go to waste tight lines
