This is probably my first TH-cam comment in at least 10 years and all it took was to hear you guys passed by Ventura where I grew up to finally say something. I just wanted to say thank you for providing us an insight into your lives and all the great stuff you catch and cook! It’s been incredibly therapeutic for me to watch you guys on a regular basis. I was actually stationed in Okinawa for the past three years and just came back to California now serving at a duty station in Elk Grove. I’ve been itching to get to the Bay Area and try everything myself I just don’t have time unfortunately. I also figured out how to fillet a fish thanks to you so my Marines in Okinawa ate great when we’d come back from fishing! Just bought a gyuto as well. Hope to catch you guys out there some day!

Hey Taku, it's not the fan that whistles, it's the the structure made of bars being not so aerodinamic

  • @JW-mx3qg
    @JW-mx3qg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

The whistle noises when you’re driving is not from your fan but rather the roof rack. I got similar roof rack on my MB van and it makes similar noises. I put a little strip of wood between the groves of each bar and gone are the noises .

When I lived in CA, we always went out for them. I LOVE them cooked in a very light tempura batter. My neighbor was a Philippino. He made me some fish sauce out of a 5 gallon bucket full that we caught. WOW ! Best stuff ever. If you see this comment, you need to give it a try. Homemade fish sauce is the best !

I live next to Doheny Beach in Dana Point. i got sick of the dearth of specific information on the grunion run schedules, so I went to every predicted grunion run time for over a year and recorded how many fish I saw.
Late March - early May is best (April-May are the no-take months). Frequently there will be thousands of fish on the shore within flashlight range. So thick you can't even walk on the beach for fear of stepping on them. Your run is what I classified as hundreds.
June occasionally produces good runs. July-August are much leaner. I wouldn't bother during these months unless you're never going to visit again. You can sit there an hour and see only a handful of fish.
Full moon is better than new moon. The middle 2 days of the predicted 4 day run are better (often there will be nothing the 1st and 4th day, while the 2nd and 3rd produce thousands of fish). You can skip the first hour. There may be a few fish then, but if they're going to show up in force it's usually about 40-60 min after the predicted start, lasting about 1-2 hours.
Bad weather/heavy surf seem to depress the runs. So does a lot of activity on the beach during the day (Doheny occasionally has weekend beach concerts). And if you're an experienced fisherman, you know how you can smell baitfish in the water? If you can smell the grunion in the water during the day, there will probably be a good run.
So if you want to maximize your chances of seeing a good run, about late March - May, full moon, 2nd or 3rd day of the predicted run, one hour after the predicted start, good weather, small swells, little human activity by the beach during the day.
People say not to shine lights into the water or you'll scare them. That's true when there's only dozens or sometimes hundreds of fish showing up. You can tell because they'll avoid the stretches of beach that you're lighting up. But once it gets into hundreds or thousands of fish, they don't really care. I have a big worklight which I brought that would light up about a 100 ft stretch of beach, and when there are thousands of fish on shore they don't care about the light. The birds stuff themselves within the first half hour and can't eat anymore, leaving the grunion undisturbed for the rest of the night.
The grunion in the Sea of Cortez actually come up on the beach during the afternoon, while the sun is out. Due to the long length of the gulf, the tide times are shifted (takes a while for the ocean to slosh into the gulf as the tide comes in). So high tide during a full and new moon is around 4 pm, instead of midnight. Those of you in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico may want to head to Mexico, instead of Southern California. Just check the local tide tables - they spawn right around high tide.

Absolutely love the grunion run. I usually go to long beach or seal beach. I've experienced nights where there are so many grunions like in the video and also nights where there are no grunions at all. Personally, I prefer the nights where only a few would be washed up from the waves and you have to chase after them before they swim back. You get a rush of adrenaline and a sense of satisfaction. Looking forward to June!

I think the whistling is from the roof rack... there may be a small pinhole, you could use small adhesive dot stickers, rubber/silicon stickers/stoppers, or happy face stickers 😀 to cover those small holes

How did you like them? I'm from St. Louis and love seafood. Things like this are like a bucket list for me because I'm so far from either ocean (and the cost of fresh seafood here is crazy high). Lobsters, oysters, clams, sea urchin, and I've never even tried grunion, geoduck or dungeness crab....I could go on and on. I remember the grunion run scene in the movie "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead" lol. Cheers

Once the grunion have hit remember the spot. Come back in 2 weeks and dig in the sand. You will discover bright orange pockets of grunion eggs. Its really neat to locate this. You can take these eggs and add them to whatever you are cooking that requires fish stock BUT if you freeze them they will keep up to a year. just let them thaw and add them to salt water and they will hatch instantly. I have had eggs frozen for a couple of years. Just put them in ocean water and they will hatch instantly. Its a cool experiment.

Whistle is from the cross bar , I have the same problem once I hit 65mph . And the whistle get louder and louder. Some people use wind fairing but is very pricey. I found a cheaper solution: go to Home Depot and get some reusable 64 in. Rubber Twist Tie by Nite Ize. Wrap one twister for each crossbar . You do not need to wrap to close . Just 5-6 inches of space and wrap it. It will get rid off the whistle. 100%

Have enjoyed grunion since I was a little boy. The one tip that I can give is to find the darkest beach, no out side lights, i.e. parking lots , houses etc. Carry on with the excellent content, j.z. from Ventura county.

For the noise, maybe a wind deflector in front of the roof rack? Fun video as usual!

Great reportage man of the “orgy of fish”! Grunion were something my family has looked for (from Encinitas CA)… thanks for the experience! BTW you and Jocyelyn have been great examples of reason thru partnership … true friendship (beyond anything else) in these times your an example of what’s important in human companionship! My wife and I would be honored to (come down from our apt in Portland OR) and camp with you anytime!

In Canada we have a grunion run but i believe its on the east coast (Newfoundland, Labrador), on the west coast there is a herring run that deposits billions of herring eggs on the beach and it coincides with the Brant geese migration, saw this in Parksville on Vancouver island couple years back.
