    Some of us pay over $300 to take a 2-day course on installation and repair and your videos show so much more. Thanks for your efforts, they are really helping us "wannabe" installers!

    This seaming video helped me more than any other seaming video. I've done three seams this week that I can hardly see. Actually, if I didn't know where they were, I wouldn't be able to find them. Some of your other videos helped me a great deal, too (especially the one where you trimmed a room carpet in 11 minutes). The four rooms I've done in the last two weeks turned out looking much more professional (better than any I've done before). This 60½ female thanks you much for all your videos!

    Thank U so much for this video. As a single mom Im learning how to do more maintenance & repair (pruned all my trees, re-bricked all of my steps . . . thank God for the internet !) and now Im ready to tackle the inside. Ur video was very concise (no industry terms) and looks un- complicated to follow. One thing I know for sure is that people who do their job well only make it LOOK easy - Im well aware of how novice projects can turn out. But at least with ur guidance, I am not afraid to give this a try.

    Very good video . Some people on here need to keep their negative opinions to them self. Go make your own video if you don't like his. Everyone does it different but at the end of day if it looks good and you cant even tell there is a seam then job well done. This is not the UK . This is the USA. Uk isn't doing it right if you didn't like this video . I keep my seam iron on 2 or 3 . He keeps on 3 or 4. All irons are not the same. Yes this is directed to Nick Bolton . Go make your own video . Make sure it says this is how we do seams In UK. Your comment has made me Angry. I have be doing this my whole life. The guy did a great job.

    This video looks helpful to me. To all those that keep saying "hire a professional" sorry, but I have been learning how to fix things for years on my house and rental properties without paying for any training. I learned my lessons, which I payed for in some cases, but I do a fine job now on almost anything. The main thing it takes is the right tools. After that, some basic knowledge of whatever you are working on and a little patience and most of your house work will look just like a professionals. Some just want to scare everybody into paying an arm and a leg to get the same thing that they could have learned to do themselves.

    This video is really cool. I just had to file a suit against my installer. He decided to piece together my hallway with 3 pieces and seams bigger than the grand canyon. Where my tiles meet the carpet, he was supposed to do a tuck and fold.. Instead he decided to just cut it straight across. Besides it taking him and his son 8 hours to do 35 yards install.. which they didn't finish.. they brought the wrong color carpet and wrong grade. Which I thought I would just look over because he seemed like like a nice guy. I'm going to attempt the install myself after watching your videos.

    I seam from the same direction as he does & just use my knees to gently adjust the carpet in & out as I go. I find if you're on top of the seam right after it's done, the glue is still hot on the tape and the seam can move.

    I think the comments from the "carpet scientists" are a bit misguided for a residential DIY instructional video. Certainly if this was a large commercial job, you would have to be really careful about warranty issues, but I think this work is probably better than 95% of residential installs, and certainly good enough for a DIYer. Thanks for posting.

    i keep the iron & all the tools for seaming always in the box, the bottom i put a 3/4 plywood with 1" holes though out, i never drag the box but pick up & lift, a metal bottom will change the diction of the pile especially when drag.

    its way better to row run it and row cut it then to straight edge the back because you can cut into the fibers. Dont get me wrong straight edging is alot quicker and easier but any professional would row run it and row cut it!

  • @jundiaz1
    @jundiaz1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    some of you professional guys do realize that's just a six inch seam on the back of the room no need to row cut or use the six inch iron on it

    • @writersgroup
      @writersgroup 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      For those amateurs like me, what does that mean 6 inch seam? Row cut?

    • @klownr02
      @klownr02 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brad Combs he saying he would not have done it the right way and made it look as though it were his home cuz its just an apartment.. A row cut is exactly what it sounds like. In the video he straight edged the back of the carpet and cut it. A row cut is two tools and it cuts the yarn side or top side of the carpet. (being this is youtube im sure some crappy carpet layer will say its only one tool) one tool looks just like an ink pen, cept its solid metal. you run that down a "row" in the yarn to make a clean cut with your row cutter. which has a handle and a blade on it. once your row is "opened", ran, or doesn't have any straggling yarns in it's path you can row cut it with the blade, makes a straight edge. the straight edge is used for when the carpet isn't running in the right direction also, but a good carpet layer measures just right to know where all his seams are before he even gives a person an estimate.

    Reading all the comments here i kinda feel bed for this guy,i was just giving a little constructive advice not trying to badger like a few people are doing,and truthfully i am always on the side of the seam not on top of it in front or in back and one thing i never see anyone in these vids do is spread the fibers open and actually see the backing is together.

    Hello I have been installing carpet for a while now in fact I was a helper for a couple of men that used a baseball stich and wax on seams. Yes thats quite a bit of experiance! The guys that try to run a row on a cut pile material are fools cut piles do not have straight rows in fact most continus filliments dont have straight rows but you can not cut the rows on them as they will fuzz and show badly. Guy the only thing is see is all us old timers use a 2 x 12 with carpet on top to set on it

    I have been a carpet installer for 30 years. There is three main points that are incorrect with this video.You always run a row to cut the seam edge,always seal the seam edge,and never use a metal tool box or tray as a seam weight because the heat from the seaming iron can distort the carpet fibers.

  • @dbeaulieu9730
    @dbeaulieu9730 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Two questions....how much did you get paid for the seaming and do you think there should be an additional charge for sealing the edge. Remember, the carpet manufacturers will not warrant the carpet install unless it's sealed.

  • @robertwise1057
    @robertwise1057 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    as we go when you are on the front of the iron its hard to move carpet with your ass on it! other than that you have the consept down. a board dosent ever rust and boxes do and your weight on the board helps make sure the glue gets into the back . Thak care and good luck! I am going to share one more thing a man just called me I missed the call when I called him back he said he has someone comming and he was headed to rent him a kicker to do the job! LOL think he watched some of these!

    "How can a spurred seam roller leave a "permanent" shadow to a carpet?"
    Answer: Carpet is not made like it used to be. these days carpet is manu by "heat set" method to twist the fibers. So when you heat the carpet with the iron and run a 'heat conducting' metal roller, esp a star roller, you un-twist the factory heat set. When the fibers are untwisted it allows light to reflect off the backing leaving a permanent reverse shadow.
    Use a plastic roller, and get a weight that's non heat conductive

  • @sirpacc
    @sirpacc 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    i noticed while you were doing the seam that the carpet was not attached yet. If you do the seam first, then kick the carpet onto the tackstrips, will that compromise the glue job that was done prior to that. I guess what i am asking is there a rule that you stretch before you glue or vice versa?

    I recently installed some carpet which requires seam joining. I do not have a heat iron. Someone recommended I use cold seaming tape. I found some on ebay, but it was recommended for temporary fixes only--it was Qep/Roberts 50-305. An online flooring retailer recommended using an adhesive that you apply along one edge (no tape used) and then finish with a seam roller. Have you any advice re either of these two methods? Can you recommend a good cold seam tape? Thanks for any help.

  • @paolajohnson4552
    @paolajohnson4552 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a few questions? Does the seaming need to be done prior to installing the padding? I'm guessing it does but just double checking because i have seen other videos where the carpet has already been installed. I'm thinking they probably left a gap in between the padding.
    Could I use a clothes iron? Would it be too hot for this or vise versa? I've been trying to find an iron like this and they're pricey. I only need to glue one piece (like one on this video) and it's a one time thing/project

    Here's a question: Is it easy to REMOVE seams and then RE SEAM? I am looking to replace just some hallway carpeting, leaving the room carpeting in place. And a few years down the line I may be replacing the room carpets.

    • @klownr02
      @klownr02 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Al Alexander No you cant remove an old seam and add a new one. Be awesome if it worked that way. The glue is far to saturated in the carpet to attempt to get a straight edge. I tried this once, but all I did was get glue every where! lol. Just cut a straight edge, directly beside the old seam, cut it out, and add your new piece. You would lose maybe 4 inches of carpet, but that's the only way. So your entry ways into each room may have hallway carpet in it.

    • @tomb306
      @tomb306 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes no problem .if you can't fold the whole carpet back and burn the tape off just cut right down middle of seam and then burn the tape off each side and then recut as little as possible from edge with straight edge and put back together .and the glue on the backing from old seam will make it a lot easier to straight edge a very little bit off without fraying the edge ..

    You should never use a metal tool box on a seam it traps heat and moisture buy a seam weight made for this also you are supposed to use seam sealer on every seam every time other than on a few commerical carpets otherwise not using it will void the warrenty

    Dont reduce a trade that takes years to learn and get good at downt to a few steps and thats all you need to be a pro. Exactly!! The most important time of a job.... is the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes!! First impressions and lasting impressions!! Always use cushion back cutter or loop pile cutter when preparing a seam! Seam sealer is a must..... every seam.... every time!! I use a seaming board as well! A piece of luan 2ft x 4 ft will work fine! Gives you more glue penetration into the primary backing , not just the secondary backing! Using a board also cools the seam faster as well. Use a seam weight and a paddle wheel tractor.... ( seam roller) then you are within the Carpet and Rug Institutes standards. I know everyone has different ways of installing carpet..... but if you end up in a lawsuit over your installation.... the judge goes to the institutes manual standards. If not seamed correctly or stretched properly by means of a power stretcher then regardless..... you will loose in the lawsuit!

      chaseme81871 if your serious no. the iron for carpet has wings on it that allow the carpet to fall smoothly on its straight edge and is canted in the front to allow the glue to glide underneath it, it doesnt make a "tidal wave" of glue in front of it, if you get what i mean.. a clothes iron.....seems really desperate. suppose maybe, if you ran it backwards with the pointed side helping to drop the carpet down. id like to see a video of it when you try.

    I agree with Snyder Gaming except you only need to seal edge of carpet before seaming on corded carpets Axminsters and Wiltons as most carpets have enough latex to not require sealing and also the carpet should be stretched on to gripper before seaming as the heat tape does not stretch as much as the carpet itself ! .From a carpet fitter 37 years to the trade.

      All carpet is seam sealed. Guys that have been doing this a long time forget that things change - I was one of them. CRI (Carpet and Rug Institute) states, " All seams must be sealed unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer. Regardless of installation method, most carpet requires an edge protective material be introduced
      between the edges to be joined. This material can be a liquid or thermoplastic and can be
      applied using various procedures and techniques."

    You need to look at the whole picture.....humm Pro Source shirt.....Pro source from my knowledge does not handle installations they sell material only.....So does he work solely for Pro source probably not....WOW not the worst I have seen but UV light equals no seam sealer equals reason for carpet manufacturer to deny claim

    All these know it all installers. Big deal he used metal box. Its gonna cool and hold. If you know so much why you googling how to seam carpet anyways? The best floor man around my way uses a straight edge over row cutter.

    Who the hell taught you to seam ?
    YOU NEVER SEAM AGAINST THE GRAIN..NOR DO YOU USE A SPIKED TRACTOR - IT DISTORTES THE WARM FIBERS !!! AND THEN YOU PUSH YOUR WEIGHT AGAINST THE ( WARMED) GRAIN AGAIN ??? SERIOUSLY ? ALWAYS SEAM WITH THE GRAIN !!!
    ...A.R.T. FLOORS. ... 🐾

    @ShowMeTheFloor your old school thats why you straight edge use a hot iron and use the tool box as a weight that traps heat and moisture in, and onto your warranty adivce youll be long retired before they start making installers CERTIFIED to install their products or it voids the warranty, BECAUSE THE DAYS OF HOT IRONS AND STRAIGHT EDGES are soon to be in the past as your self proclaimed method suggest.
    row running, kool glide, and seamer down now is the future!

    What this guys is trying to say is, Hire a pro this isn't a do it yourself project. Carpets like this a blind man can seam up and make it look good, but berbers and light colored dense pile carpets and patterns need skills to line it up right, unless you want to pay a professional to fix your screw up! As a pro I even doubt this guys abilities, but to each their own!

    you did not seal the edge of the carpet that is a must do on all seams before you seam it together that keep them from fraying in the future !!!!!!

    What at unbelievable hack. All carpet must be row cut for seaming. He obviously has not worked with the manufacturers, CFI and Carpet and Rug Institute. All of his videos show only installation techniques that are amateur hour. He uses only a knee kicker to install his carpet. I have been a carpet installer and manager for over 25 years, worked closely with manufacturers and am appalled by his technique. It is not a matter of if it will fail, but when. This is not a hate comment, just realistic. Straight edging seams is incorrect installation.

      Darren Kundert straight edging seams is incorrect installation 95% of the time. If your rows don't run straight you have to straight edge them, that's the only time it's acceptable. But compared to the last video I watched where a "installer" literally free hand cut a seam, this guys looks like a master installer.

    In this video he didn't 1.) Did not seal the seam edges with a carpet seam sealer. Both sides must have this applied and let dry prior to making the seam. All carpet mills require both sides of the seam be sealed or the warranty will be void. 2.)He didn't mention not to overlap any seam tape of the seam tape that's on the carpet.). When he made the end seam to increase the length of of the fill piece.(The paper will not let the seam hold together, If the tape has to overlap you must remove /scrape off the paper part (not the glue or mesh) 3.) To much heat will promote carpet delamination, Honestly just because Homedepot says you can do it yourself. I still hire a auto mechanic to work on my van, as a auto mechanic hires myself to install his flooring.

      N Albert well he didnt install warranty carpet im sure its for an apartment, it will be replaced at the end of the new tenants lease. I do agree with 2. when doing a perpendicular seam the first seam tape needs the paper end removed so the second seam tape can adhere to that portion of the carpet. Number 3, iron just has to hot enough to melt all of the glue, but not too hot that it burns the glue, if your rushing to push the iron while setting the seam, then the iron is way too hot.

    • @nalbert6979
      @nalbert6979 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to agree on his warranty, most likely 10 steps or ten seconds which ever comes first.Most seam tape manufacturers now make lower temp melting point seam tape. The days of burning the seam @ 3 is long gone. In fact I hardly even use a hot melt iron anymore. CoolGlide is the way to go. It's low profile tape that's 4 inches wide, and the thermal glue is far superior to any hot melt iron on the market. Also it sits above the carpet. Now once the seam is set in place nothing drags thru the seam. Unless you use their fin. It takes about 1 iron length to get used to it. Only time I touch the iron now is to move it up and hit the power button , which cycles 1 length melt.
