Loved the video Stefan. I too flew Emirates Business Class from Tullamarine for my very first time (figured it was one way of avoiding a. DVT and b. Jet Lag) and my accountant said it was a business expense (that pleased the wifey!). I found the storage in the window seats were much better than the aisle ones, but nice to fly into London with a view over Wembley, Westminster etc. I went over in the beginning of July and managed to even bang out RIAT this year off the bucket list! I'm really looking forward to the videos around the UK mate, and from one ex-pat to another, it's always good to go home...even if it's just to remind you why you left! lol. Oh and yeah, it was warmer here in Gippsland than the UK lmao! Safe travels.
Hey Stef, I fly to Europe (Germany) once a year. I never get jet lagged and usually fly these routes and times. Leave Sydney around 3pm and do a 8 hour leg to Asia. I usually stop in Singapore or Hong Kong. Don’t sleep on this flight and as it’s pretty short the flight goes quick. I usually go for a 2 hour stop over in Asia. By the time you leave for the second flight it’s around 2am home time. Sleep as much as you can on the second 12 hour flight as you want to sleep anyway. If you can get around 8 hours sleep it’s a bonus. You arrive in Europe around 7am. Stay awake all day and try and get to bed around 8pm. You will sleep well as you have missed one sleep session. Next day you are now on Europes sleep schedule.
@@phanoonki works every time. You lose one sleep session but your overseas on holidays and your body adjusts quickly to the new time zone with this schedule
That’s what I do, stay awake as long as possible and try get to sleep around 10-11pm European time, wake up when you land at 7am and stay up as late as possible that night
Garmin Pilot was like 'why is that Cirrus so high, fast and far away from home?' ;) Really nice video, it was a joy to watch, just like Spain's football during Euro :P
great to see you trying this out again after the first video stef, i recently got back from new york flying qantas via auckland in ecconomy and it was rough, however i also tried to fight jetlag by sleeping, i ended up sleeping for 8 hours both ways and had no issue with jetlag (surprisingly). so i can say it does work but you really need to force your self to sleep when especially when sitting upright in economy!! keep up the great videos!
This is 100% the way to go. I always change the time on my watch to my destination immediately upon boarding just so I can mentally get in the habit of checking the time and internalizing it, as well as like you said, matching the sleep/wake hours! Though it's obviously easier said than done, on a long voyage like this you can only fight the sleep for so long especially in such a comfy seat 🤣
Love seeing you back in the skies after the journey you’ve had. Really enjoyed this. Love these informative videos. Great helping us out on FF info. Cheers Lisa x
Great to see you on a commercial flight again. I'm trying to maintain my platinum status and finding flying Qantas international a bit too expensive. I'm flying Cathay Pacific to the Far East in September for that reason.
Nice one, Stef, will be on the same plane, same time next month, doing the same experiment for the second time this year keeping the status credits rolling in
I love these types of video you do best Steff. Also, despite thinking I’m quite smart with points and status credits, it was only a month ago flying BA that I realised I could earn status credits as well as points when flying a different one world flight not just Qantas. I always earn status and points with Qantas and use the points for business flights on Cathay, Emirates or China Eastern. Now I’m going to book Emirates business from Melbourne to London.
Thanks Richard, and smart way to book/use points. Yes I thought I’d include that as not everyone does realise earning with one airline doesn’t mean only ever flying with that airline. Always pays to shop around. Thanks for the kind words.
Currently halfway through the video and feeling your challenges. I think your method works (it’s what I do) but I start the night before with early bed/early wake up. If you don’t get the sleep on the first flight and push through it’s pretty crazy at the other end with only a few hours sleep!
Direction of travel matters as well. In my experience, jet lag tends to affect me when traveling east, such as from Europe to Australia. However, I rarely experience jet lag when traveling west from Australia to Europe, infact I get to sleep more.
i just got back from bali going home via melbourne and it took us a whole hour to get through the declaration and there was a new ticket system to get in instead of the passport e-gates which was a pain in the behind, anyway im glad too see you again on my feed
Awesome seeing you well and healthy Stefan. Im in Perth. When we fly to Europe, we fly to Singapore down the back, or BC on points. Then buy return BC flights Singapore to Europe on Emirates. Usually can pick up return around 4k so save a fortune. Even in BC I cant sleep. I force myself to stay awake till around 7pm and next day im good to go. Coming back. No sleep and totally delirous. Usually land around 1am and im still awake at 5am. Takes me a few days to get over the flight back. My hubby is fifo. Only has to sniff jet fuel abd he is out for the count. Drives me nuts.
A few years back I got Velocity Gold thanks to multiple Sydney - London flights with Etihad. I think I only ever flew 1-2 times internationally with Virgin. Now I always check partner airlines to make sure I'm racking up the status for the best price.
Oh no… sleep on second flight…! I love the EK 409/5 combo. I live in regional NSW, my strategy is to get an evening flight into Melb after work, stick my luggage in the lockers in Spencer st, go for a walk/dinner/gelato, then get on the 1245 skybus to check in as soon as it opens… stay awake until breakfast on 409 then sleep hard. Always awake til I hit Europe. No jetlag. Wins every time!
I’ve tried it a few times and my conclusion is that it’s impossible for me, at least in economy class. I struggle to sleep on the plane generally, but as soon as they bring the lights up in the plane I can’t possibly sleep at all, it’s just too noisy. The Brisbane flight leaves at around 9pm, to jump into a time zone of western Europe you’d have to stay up for several hours and then sleep soundly for the second half, but you end up being awake for the time when the cabin is dark and (relatively) quiet, and then mostly trying to sleep when the cabin is bright and noisy. So for that one I just try and sleep as soon as they dim the lights or I will miss my chance. I always do stay awake for the DXB to Europe fights (which end up in the day connecting from EK435 ex-Brisbane) but again simply because I’m not good at sleeping on planes! I tend to not have much jet lag though on these ones, just because I get in in the early afternoon on these itineraries and am so sleep deprived that I can easily sleep for 11 or 12 hours (I try to stay up until at least 8pm if I can, which is tricky with four or so hours of sleep in the previous 48 hours). As long as I get up at a reasonable time I’m pretty good.
wow - didn't know MEL even had de-icing capability. interesting video - I am taking that early EK flight in Feb for the looong day into Europe, so was interested in your strategy. I am hoping that by arriving in the evening after not having much sleep the night before (ie getting to airport at 3am) means I can crash and get a good nights sleep.
Studying for my PPL theory ATM, I can't help but have to point out that although you are travelling west and making the jet lag a bit easier to manage, our body only adapt 1 - 1.5 hours time difference everyday!!! Hmmmm I think I remebered my human factor well, let me go back to my study XD
You would have flown over my house! I think I took the same emirates flight back to London when I was visiting my family in Australia and I tried a similar thing. Sleep on the first leg, stay up on the second and like you it worked. Well sort of. I am curious did you sleep the night before to get to the airport for 3? That was what I really had no idea what to do with. I ended up staying up all night and was absolutely zonked by the time I got into my seat.
Great video mate. Question Stef: You showed a quick shot out of the A380's window, while taxiing, looking at the ground markings. Are the marking the same all over the world? Do you recognise and understand them?
At least you tried😅 Had the same types of flights as you but didn’t bother to even try, natural clock came back on it’s own as I arrived (slept for 12hours straight)
How can you sleep with a full cup of coffee plus a sugar, plus a coffee earlier at the lounge ? When I was younger, I thought coffee didn't affect me, but not anymore - and that's normal. A cup of chamomile tea helps a lot.
didn't understand that part either as it was the first class lounge.. Don't fly EK that often but have only been in one of the first class lounged while in F.
He is an emerald one world customer so can get access to first class lounges. And probably got status credits because it’s booked through Qantas’s website and isn’t a reward flight.
I feel like you really got the caffeine manipulation wrong with this experiment... Coffee before your first flight when you were attempting to sleep on it? Thats crazy. If i go to the USA or Canada from the UK i always try and basically do 24hrs of daytime and then sleep 10pm - 8am on my new time zone and it doesn't full fix the jetlag but gets me 75% of the way there.
Just catching up re previous exchange: emirates staff @ 3 am were fantastic and directed all our luggage to an out of the way Italian domestic destination. Flights ( upper deck there and back) not conducive for sleeping ( too much flight nerd excitement) QFF , but have flown Emirates exclusively past three years. Cheers & stay well & please keep reporting?

It would be better if Stef did this trial in Economy and no access to a lounge to see how you go with Jetlag.
I know it only came out but this is such a cool video idea just from the intro I know it’s gonna be a great video

The new EK PJs are so damn soft and comfortable. Btw I use the timeshifter app for managing jetlag.. it's honestly life changing.
