Perfect tutorial. I’m going to try it. I’m new at quilting and like how you suggested picking the three strips. I have a jelly roll waiting for me. Thank you.
Enjoy!
Great tutorial ❤
Rail Fence is my favorite design for baby quilts. They go together quickly and look great. Thanks for your tutorial.
You are so welcome!
I just finished a kit that I bought today in a 4 strip rail fence. I might be ready to cut my own after watching. Thanks for the inspiration.
You can do it!
Nice tutorial... love the fabric that you used that was so "springy". One of the reasons that I really like your videos, is that you don't have alot of extra fluff. Just straight to the point with clear instructions, and ending with the re-cap. Thanks so much. Blessings to y'all.
Thanks so much Vicki, I appreciate it!!
I have been holding on to a jelly roll, not knowing whuch pattern to use it in. Just found the right pattern. Yr colours were the inspiration. TFS
Yay - glad you like it!
From a new quilter....... i’ve watched many beginner videos learning how to cut and sew quarter inch properly and I have practice that. Now it’s time for me to start pissing and I absolutely love your video compared to other videos like it. You are simple efficient and to the point and perfect for me and my needs. So I think you and keep up the great videos here on TH-cam
Thank you so much Karen! I really appreciate your kind feedback and am glad to hear my videos are helpful for beginner quilters!
I have made this twice and love the pattern. Thank you for your clear and concise instructions.
Wonderful! So glad you love it!
Love your tutorials. I want to try this even though I am a beginner. I do have a couple jelly rolls that I can finally crack open. Thank you for ALWAYS having a free pattern to share. Haven’t seen any other designer who offers that. Thank you! ♥️
Thank you so much Heidi, I really appreciate your king words. ❤️
I dito to this! At 65 yrs. old I'm just learning and appreciate this pattern and tutorial so much!
I watched this video about 2 months ago, and have since made 3 of these quilts and have another one in the works. It is so quick and easy to make, and the smaller one is just the right size for the couch or a chair (and I get two out of a queen sized batting-- you wouldn't think it going by the measurements, but it works). Two of them I quilted using a serpentine stitch on the seamlines in both directions, and one I did a little less densely, quilting diagonally across the blocks. I also like the fact that there is no waste. Thank you for your videos!
Oh Sue, this makes me so happy! I'm so glad that you enjoy this pattern. Thank you for the clear instructions. Do you have a tutorial for the star on the wall to your left?
Sew cute!
Thanks!
Great tutorial! How do you press the seams, towards the centre strip or away from it?
Hi Marie - since the blocks are rotate direction, it doesn't really matter which way you press the seams, so I'd just do what you are most comfortable with. Thanks!
Hi I decided this was the perfect quilt for my granddaughter. I got all the strips together and pressed, must have pressed wrong or measured my seam allowance from the needle wrong. I cut the 6.5 blocks, but quickly realized my blocks are all 6.5 by 5.5. Do I need to square up each one to make them even or can I sew each row and square up the one side. What would be easier for this newby? Thank you
Sorry for the late response - but it would probably be better to square up before you piece them together.
How many jelly rolls do I need to make a queen bed quilt? How to I make the adjustments with the pattern?
I was wondering if you could tell me how big the 2 jelly roll quilt is. I want to buy backing and binding when I buy the jelly rolls. Thank you.
Hello Amanda - do you iron and starch the strips before you sew the strips? I do because I like to pre-shrink and the starch makes them so nice to work with. Anyways,I sewed my strips sets today (to make this quilt) but my strips must have also shrank on the width because I have precise 1/4” seams yet my 3 strips measured 6 3/8” not 6.5” ☹️☹️☹️ I still ended up cutting the 6.5”
I don't usually iron my strips (just yardage and FQs) before cutting and sewing and I rarely starch. I have noticed that different manufacturers cut their 2 1/2 strips at different widths (not all are exactly 2 1/2", especially depending on how the pink the edges, etc.). I'm sorry yours were a bit short, but it looks like you'll be able to make it work. Good luck!
What were the fabrics used on the original quilt?
Thanks Amanda ! I've made all the blocks for your Square Dance quilt pattern but am having some trouble making a nice layout. I have taken a picture with my phone and made it black and white. The fabrics seem to have too many medium tones... any suggestions ?
Hi Colleen, I usually don't worry too much about the placement of the medium tones. I'm mostly concerned that the dark and light tones are evenly distributed. If you'd like to send me an email with the photo to take a look, feel free. amanda@materialgirlquilts.com
Thanks!
@@MaterialGirlQuilts Hi Amanda, Thank you for your reply. The quilt has been on a "time-out" for uncooperative behaviour. I will take your advice to my design wall and see how it goes ! I really appreciate your generous offer :)))
When sewing long strips, do you alternate the direction you sew to prevent the strip set from warping/curving.
I didn't with this quilt since I was only sewing a total of three strips together, but that is a good idea when sewing a lot of long strips together.
Does anyone really toss the extra?!! 🤷♀️ Great video!
Ha! I certainly don't!
Does it matter how you press your seams for the first part?
Hi Tiffani, it doesn't really matter in the first part how you press your seams.
The rolls use to come42, but they switched them out to 40, sad...
WHAT is the finished size?
It depends if you use one or two jelly rolls. One jelly roll will give you a 48"x54" quilt and 2 will finish at 72"x78". Details are in the pattern - drive.google.com/file/d/1QVnq...

you need closed captioned for those of us who are deaf
I Penny, I have automatic CC set for all of my videos, but for some reason this one isn't on there. I sincerely apologize because this is important to me! I will work to get captions added and let you know once it is complete. Again, my apologies!
