    Support is by far the most difficult aspect for me. The feel, the pressure, the sensations. It's quite difficult for me haha. I've watched all your videos about breath support many times and they are very helpful. I especially like that you don't use the cue of going to the bathroom :D

    I realized I was locking a lot on longer phrases because I thought I had to keep my abs and ribs suspended all the time after inhaling. Because of this my tongue root dropped and I couldn't ease into my high notes. Even harsh metal vocals that require a certain amount of compression were worse due to the oversuspending which intensified the compression so that my throat would feel tensed.

  • @WingManWren
    @WingManWren 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    This is brilliant, thank you. The main problem I have is tension in my throat, jaw, tongue etc. and I think it's sometimes because I focus too much on purely just tensing/locking my abs. This video has helped a ton, thank you.

    Hello again Victoria ^_^
    So, if I understand correctly- support isn't intentionally pushing/hardening your stomach/abdominal muscles like a shell.
    Support is controlling how fast your stomach/abdomen (sometimes just called diaphragm area) pushes/releases air into your vocal cords?
    Support means slowing/regulating your air, which naturally in turn causes your said muscles to ENGAGE actively.
    Support isn't about tightening/hardening your muscles, which would mean LOCKING your said muscles so they can't aid the release of air.
    Am I going the right direction in this line of thought? Gosh, you're an amazing coach- I have never had so many breakthrough thoughts or different understandings of my voice as I have had while watching your videos. You're awesome, Miss Victoria!
    Thank you.

      I cannot tell without seeing and hearing you. It sounds like you may be pushing up too much vocal weight. Try going from your "unreal voice" into vocal exercises! Your "unreal voice" may teach your something, and who knows? It may be something that you can apply to your natural singing voice!

    I have never heard the lower ab info before. What an eye opener! My main focus after eliminating vocal polyps is to get better breath support. I can hiss and it's steady, but when I get to a certain point I feel a little lightheaded. I am sitting down so no worries there. I hope the more I work on this the less that will happen. Could I be inhaling too much and hyperventilating? Thanks for all of the wonderful, helpful videos.

I'll try to keep them elastic as much as I can! But I did notice the free flow of air while doing the exercises with you.. I always blamed my throat for something it never did.. Sorry throat! haha.

    Again, a very helpful Video. Thanks for all your efforts!❤
    Question: in a different Video you say, not to do chest breathing. One shouldn t Move the chest. Here in this Video you say, If i understand correctly- one can move the chest and also should Move flanks/chestribs. It s a point i don’t get! I can t Move my flanks without slightly Moving/breathing into chest (my shoulders dont Go up though). Also, If i only relax tummy while inhaling i ve got a feeling, i do Not getting enough Air (approx. Every 4-5 breath) and ripcage/flanks dont open. I Know one doesnt Need so much air for singing but i have this as a normal need. I Hope you can follow my explaination 😮 So i would be Great to know how to do it Right! It would be Great to see the bodywork you do while singing. And is it right Not to Give Impulses while singing a Phrase (why do teachers always say to Give more Power on the high Note in the phrase? If i do that i can see my Upper stomach giving an Impulse). So i try to practise to keep my tummy out. So your exercise is Not for illustrative purpose to Give Impulses while singing or? Last Question: as a tip you said to imagine blowing up a ballon First easy than stronger. But If a Blow up a difficult ballon i feel locked up?! Is it correct to vary the strenth of Supporting muscles within a song or Even phrase? Or ist that wrong because it is opposite of just holding breath flexible (no pushing or pulling) but blowing a balloon is slighly pushing (for me atleast😢) Yours Natalie

I think of it as a wonderful gift from God to express praise and thanks to Him and to inspire and encourage others listening. Just read in the Book of the Psalms. A lot of descriptive words in the clip, but I'm just not getting the techniques. Without more showing how, "lock" is just a word. I need more on how to do it physically. It's like telling a young batter to swing as hard as you can, without showing how to use the entire body during the swing--otherwise they're swinging with just their arms (similar to singing with just the vocal cords).

    Victoria, As a gigging singer, this has to be one of the most frustrating elements to deal with. It just seems like some of my Rock songs require not a lock or a tightening, but more of a vertical thrust downward. It's as if the diaphragm was a piston dropping and staying down for the duration of the belted note. When I thrust downward, I feel free up top. It's physically demanding. Rock songs that are punchy or "stacatto-ish" seem to require this. Your thoughts? Thank you!

    • @Victoria-Victorious
      @Victoria-Victorious  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure, for the big money notes, dramatic singing (whether it be rock, pop, opera or any style), and high belting, it takes firmer support, BUT you would not sing an entire 4-5 minute song that way or else the song would get boring as in too intense, overkill), plus it is hard on the voice. Do that in selected places in your songs.

      Hello. As stated on my website, my private studio is full and I am not adding to the wait list. Your other options are:
      1. participating in my group classes for members of my audio exercise training program www.healthyvocaltechnique.com/group-classes/ (need to become a VVVEP member first (www.healthyvocaltechnique.com/order-victorias-victorious-vocal-exercise-program/)
      2. submitting a video for evaluation: www.healthyvocaltechnique.com/product/video-review-of-your-singing/
      3. Of course, you should be subscribed to my TH-cam channel where I post valuable info seldom found online and certainly not for free! th-cam.com/users/vrsing
      Make sure that you are on my mailing list to be informed of future opportunities. The easiest way to get on the list is to get my 2 free e-books: www.healthyvocaltechnique.com/victorias-victorious-e-books/

    This might be one of my problems. NOT using my various muscles. I can do these exercises with pushing the solar plexus out and pulling the stomach in but I can also do them with zero movements in my abdomen. I however feel like my voice gets strained easily even in low registers. It´s very frustrating. I really want to starts singing again but it feels like an uphill battle with no peak in sight😥

      Start slowly. Singing should never hurt and if it does, stop immediately. I recommend following my Beginners Playlist. th-cam.com/play/PLaWjWxiTysDBD7MGUWCSdC4yhLzxVsEdW.html Focus on speech first and if easy, apply to singing. • @Victoria-Victorious
      @Victoria-Victorious  ปีที่แล้ว

      You only take in enough air to sing the phrase. There is no maximum or minimum time. See my PLAYLIST on Breathing and Breath Support: th-cam.com/play/PLaWjWxiTysDCQDneLVxvJRkJp_Omj_vbp.html

  • @legitsting4774
    @legitsting4774 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm confused, I've been told to work on your support by working with the muscle infront of the sternum.
    When I gradually tighten it while singing my voice has more power. (Lower abs follow but not as much)
    Is this the same thing as locking?

    • @Victoria-Victorious
      @Victoria-Victorious  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are partly correct! The sternum is part of appoggio, but sternum connection only is very incomplete. I do mention keeping the chest comfortably high and wide in the video, but the main muscles of support are the upper and lower abdominals (front, sides & back).

    what does locking mean though?

    • @Victoria-Victorious
      @Victoria-Victorious  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It means that your abs are too tight which then locks up the breath followed the throat, as demonstrated in this video.

    • @Victoria-Victorious
      @Victoria-Victorious  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I explain and demonstrate the 3 ways you can wind up locking - the upper abs (solar plexus), the lower abs and the ribs. Then I give 2 exercises to unlock. Did you watch the whole video and do the exercises? If so, you may need to watch it again.

    • @Victoria-Victorious
      @Victoria-Victorious  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They expand but should not "balloon out", otherwise you would probably wind up with an ugly belly breath. See this video: Breathing for Singing - UGLY (and Common) MISTAKE & SOLUTION! .th-cam.com/video/43VUzocnNcQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @Victoria-Victorious
      @Victoria-Victorious  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      More power in a healthy way takes more support for firmer vocal fold closure without squeezing the throat.
