Broncos Country Let's Cry. Who to blame for the Russell Wilson Debacle

  • Who is to blame for Russell Wilson failing in Denver? Was it Sean Payton being hard to work with? Was it Nathaniel Hackett being a terrible NFL football coach? Was it Russell Wilson's failing athletic abilities and his ego? Was it the dumpster fire called the Denver Broncos. Or was it a mixture of everyone?

hiring payton was almost as bad a move as giving up so much for wilson. and why in the world the team didn't try to build on wilson's strength and instead tried to change a veteran qb? just horrible decisions. the walmart franchise seems to be headed for many years as the premier dumpster fire in the nfl.

I think part of the reason why they didn't build around Russ is how bad he looked in his first season in Denver. You're right though. It's going to be rough.

Good video & you made lots of good points. It amazes me that media never asked the question: if Sean Payton fled New Orleans with his tail between his legs because he could not find a quarterback to run his office there, then how can anyone reasonably expect him to find a quarterback while in Denver? In the past 18 years, we’ve only seen one quarterback, Drew Brees, run Payton’s offense with any success. Maybe this time will be remembered as when going to the Broncos destroyed the chances of both a SB winning QB & a SB winning coach from making the Hall of Fame.
Russ was acquired by the previous owners to boost the sale price of the Broncos. First they hired Hackett because they wanted Aaron Rodgers, a franchise QB to boost the sale price of the team. When that didn’t work they traded away the future draft assets for Russ & sold the team for $4.65 billion, Partially because the new owners thought they were walking into a team that was ready for a Super Bowl run. Remember that corporate sports media was projecting the Broncos as Super Bowl favorites because of the trade for Russ. Previous didn’t care that the team had no draft picks because that was for the owners who has Super Bowl fever. Then media didn’t report on Russ’ practices. No way they could’ve gone well considering how games were played.
Not one person in media questioned whether Russ would need time to learn & switch to a timing based offense.

Good points. I think Sean left New Orleans not so much due to not finding a Quarterback, but more for the salary cap situation and not wanting to rebuild. I think the Saints did the right thing with trying to win with Drew in the end, but eventually the bill becomes due. Finding a quarterback was part of it for sure, but I think it was more than just that. Where I disagree is Drew was not the only QB to run his system well. Teddy Bridgewater played one of his best seasons under Payton, which is why the Panthers paid him a good amount. Jameis Winston also played some of his best football under Sean Payton as well. His only real "failure" was Russell Wilson, and Russell Wilson had a bounce back season under Payton. I still think Payton is a very good head football coach with X's and O's, but struggles with getting along with players and other coaches. Payton has been good, just not good enough to justify the amount of money he is being paid. I'm interested to see where the team goes.

I agree as well that the old owners brought Russ in to help sell the team. Where I question the move is why was that necessary. The commanders sold just fine this past year without a quarterback, or for that matter any hint of a nontoxic culture. Sure maybe it made them so money, but selling the team would still have been very easy. You are absolutely right that the media didn't say anything negative about Russ when he went there. I was super excited when he was traded, and thought Denver would finally be good again. Unfortunately Russ is older and just not quite as athletic as he used to be, which was where Russ was special. He just isn't the franchise saver he was billed to be, or used to be. I think him going the the Steelers will be good for him. He doesn't have to be the savior, but function as himself. He also has a chip on his shoulder to show he still has it. I think he is more interested in being a football player again, instead of being a celebrity. I hope it works out for him.

@@SecondStringHammer Thank you. Yes NFL fandom has lots of opinions so no one will agree on everything. All that counts is ppl who disagree understanding how much work TH-camrs like you put into a channel. They need to respect that work & if they disagree about something that you’ve said they need to do it respectfully. Sorry about all my typos in the first comment. I was short on time and wasn’t able to type so I spoke into my phone. Thanks again for a great video.
I hope that Payton finds a good QB for the Broncos. Part of me wishes he’d modified his offense for Russ’ skills because of how hard it is find & develop good QBs. Payton got Drew Brees without having to develop him much.
I know it sounds crazy that a previous owners just wanted to sign a franchise QB to boost the sales price, but one of the variables in team values is that teams with a true franchise QB under contract & teams that are considered SB contenders are valued higher. They gave up so much to get Russ. New owners start out close with the league office because that’s who approves their purchase. But owners who stay too close can end up getting bad advice on hires. The inner workings of the league & who gives advice to owners is a fascinating world. Thanks again for a great video. Good luck with your channel & with your team this season. 🍀👍

@@SecondStringHammer The big difference in the Commanders & Broncos is location of the franchise. Owning an NFL team in the nation’s capital provides opportunities for that billionaire to have some of the most powerful ppl in the world in the private stadium suites. The amenities, museums, access to govt plus, national & world leaders visiting the facilities, etc. although it’s been over 30 years since that franchise has won a Super Bowl, when it happens it’s amazing how much attention the owner gets. NYC & L.A. are similar due to the size of the media markets. Finally, it’s a very old team so there’s a big fan base everywhere. It looks like the federal government will get invoked in subsidizing a new stadium too. So all of those factors makes it a very attractive purchase for billionaires seeking even more power & profit than typically available through NFL team ownership which is still immense regardless of the franchise. Good news is that the Broncos have less distractions & hopefully will win before the Commanders. 👍

@@SecondStringHammer I live in Western Washington, so I am a Seahawks fan. However, there are other teams that I like and teams that I don't like. The Broncos are one of the teams I like. That goes back to the days of John Elway and the Orange Crush. I really wish Russell Wilson had done well in Denver.
If Seahawk fans seem to have an attitude, it's because they do. For the first thirty years of their existence, any time the Seahawks made it to the playoffs, they were dismissed as not deserving to be in the playoffs because they weren't champions like the Cowboys or the Steelers. So Seahawk fans developed an attitude. The Seahawks are our team and our players, and we really don't care what you think.
Then the Seahawks made it to the Super Bowl. Was anyone asking if the Seahawks could win their first Super Bowl? No. All anyone wanted to know was if Jerome Bettis would finally get his Super Bowl ring. Cuz the only thing that matters is the happiness of Jerome effing Bettis.
The Super Bowl arrived, and the Seahawks got hit with three penalties for nonexistent fouls. The first called back a play that should have resulted in a touchdown; the second called back a play that was to about the 3 yard line; and the third set up the Steelers for a score. My personal opinion is that the officials were under pressure, just like everyone else. The Steeler defense was supposed to shut down the Seahawk offense, and the Steelers were supposed to run all over the Seahawk defense. Instead, the Seahawks were moving the ball and, other than a few trick plays, the Steelers really weren't going anywhere. Perhaps the officials thought they were missing something, and got a little too anxious with the flags.
The result was the Steelers won the game, despite Roethlisberger having a 22.6 quarterback rating for the game, and the Seahawks clearly being the better team. On his return to Seattle, coach Holmgren stated that he hadn't expected they'd have to play against the refs as well, a statement that would normally prompt a fine from the NFL. Apparently, the league just wanted the controversy to go away.
So, if your team is on the receiving end of some bad calls, you'll get sympathy from Seahawk fans, but that's about it.
