  • I thought this ghost town was lame because it's right off a paved road, only 90 minutes from Vegas, and is usually kinda crowded (for a ghost town)...but it turned out to be SUPER COOL!

Rhyolite was a gold mining town. I was in Rhyolite in the late 70’s before everything was fenced off. There was a funky ol corrugated tin type Quonset hut just as you came into Rhyolite where an old desert rat had a sort of museum full from top to bottom with desert finds that you could wander around in and he said he was still prospecting for gold in the hills around there. He showed me a cigar box about half-full of rocks with gold matrix in them. Super interesting, I spent the better part of a day bullshiting with the old dude (he told me he was 92) and looking at his cool stuff and listening to his stories about a lot of it. Priceless memories!
There was also a little town across the road heading toward Death Valley called Bullfrog; the only thing left there was part of an old ice house storage where they stored ice that they brought in by train for the summer months.
Have you ever been to the Armargosa Opera House?

1905.....originally started as a two-tent mining camp soon boomed to an estimated 5,000 people within six short months. Just as if the town literally sprung up over night, by this time Rhyolite already had 50 saloons, 35 gambling tables, 19 lodging houses, 16 restaurants, several barbers, a public bath house, and the Rhyolite Herald-a weekly newspaper publication. Also, four daily stagecoaches

Another great tour. I was looking for Rattlers more than you were! Rhyolite is an interesting mineral. Great to have your huge fan base do the research for you! '62 Impala I think. Needs work! Keep those fancy hiker boots in the truck please. Amazing that those sculptures have lasted 35+ years. There must be many tunnels in the mountain in the distance.

WH, I loved the video. This is why I come here. I love your observations, you don't need to research a place, though I love that too. Watching your videos is like taking a 10 year old to Disneyland for the first time. You enjoy seeing someone else learn a place. It is your fascination with these places that make the videos compelling. We get to share in your joy. As for ever being in the desert without proper footing or water, as an old desert rat, emphasis on old, I just don't believe in ever taking the desert for granted.

Long-time viewer, surely saw this when you made it, and clearly remember seeing the later "rose" video you made there. This time, I had been researching the defunct/removed railroad lines from Vegas to Tonopah, got sidetracked into Rhyolite history, and figured I ought to revisit your old take on it here. So I just Googled Wonderhussy Rhyolite, and there you were, as certain to have good info about it as Wikipedia. Better, actually, being first-hand research!
Pretty trippy watching straight lines go all wavy with in the old GoPro footage here until its battery died. So, maybe what is historic about this video is that it showed the legendary SJ/WH that GoPro footage sucks, and to just use a phone camera.

You should check out the last supper and the other "ghost" figures at night. Very interesting. The impressive building (3 story) is the ruins of the Thomas Cook bank. It is one of the most photographed images of western ghost towns. The Porters was indeed a general store. The 2 story building in the distance is actually the school. Check out Stanley Paher's Nevada Ghost Towns and Mining Camps.

Have you watched the National Geographic TV Special "The Great Mojave Desert"? It first aired in 1971 but was filmed in 1969, it features many of the spots you visited, like the bottle house. Interestingly production was cut short when the Tate-LaBianca murders happened and the film crew went to Los Angeles to cover the murders.

Yeah, we're going fulltime traveling as soon as my wife recovers from her hip operation. I went to get a haircut the other day because all the barber shops had been closed for Coronavirus and it was really long. I wanted a more up to date cut like a fade on the sides with a little on top, kind of like a modified Mohawk. I asked the lady what she thought of me dying it blonde just for the fun of it. She said, "Oh, no, you've got beautiful silver hair. People are dying their hair this color nowadays." So I left it gray. That blonde statue of blocks reminded me of the artwork in that video for "I Want My MTV." The West is ultimate freedom and that's why I generally don't go east of the Mississippi River, although I spent a lot of time in the midwest and east when I was younger, all over New England. Too many bluebloods in Boston.

Rhyolite was one of the few towns built to last in the mining era. There were 7 railroads to get the ore, gold was the main one, the area was called the Bullfrog Mining District. Bullfrog is next door but not much left there. In 1905 or so there were 10,000 living there by 1911 less than a hundred and dwindled down after that. There were cement buildings bank, stores and the school. The Friends of Rhyolite also have an annual event or used to. It is a favorite town of many folks despite its ease of access. Gold Point is interesting too and I believe privately owned.

Yes, built as a substantial town, then abandoned for new gold strikes, the story repeats often there. I was a member of The Friends of Rhyolite group at one time. The town was under threat of new mining as some had been discovered deep in that area, 1990's. Someone made the open pits across the road going out there for the cyanide leaching step in the gold extraction process, I was told. Just a few miles away is Bullfrog, there used to be a store there. An old couple lived there ran the store and rode dune buggies around for fun, there was a spring so they had water. There also used to be a cemetery near one of these towns. It is an enjoyable and historic spot for anyone to make.

That barred building may have been the explosives store (magazine). There is a small one from the 1800s in the town I used to live in, Cooktown in Far North Queensland Australia. The magazine in Cooktown had barred windows and a heavy door too. They were fortified to prevent miners from stealing the explosives powder. Of course, if it was a Gold/Silver area, it could have been the assay building, where the Gold was stored.
