Creepy Abandoned Mining Hospital

  • While cruising through the Rocky Mountains, I stumbled on this group of mysterious abandoned houses that looked to date from the 1960s or '70s....one of which was full of the CREEPIEST rusty old abandoned medical furniture and equipment!! This was in an area of major mining activity in the 1800s, which was reclaimed/cleaned up sometime in the last 50 years...so maybe these buildings had something to do with mine cleanup, and the medical stuff was part of some old abandoned mining hospital. Who knows?! All I can say for sure is, it was CREEPY AS ALL GET-OUT! Of course near the end, I conjecture as to what exactly happened here....stay tuned til the end for the sad, sad tale of Little Jimmy Dickens, the mulleted, mustachioed Cadillac-driving loser who crashed his Brougham one snowy night coming over the pass from Durango!

In 1966 dad and I questioned the mine Watchman who lived in the house next to the 'hospital'. We were getting info on a mine belonging to a friend of dad's who mined near there in the 1930's, which we found! It's mind boggling how many times we have crossed paths Sarah, and how similar our interests are.

That rack with the narrow slots (behind the hospital bed, in the first building you went in) is for charging the Batteries on Miners Cap Lamps. The Battery goes in the slot & the Cap Lamp clips onto the little bracket below the slots and makes the electrical contact with the charger. - < Doc, Retired. Miner for nearly 50 years. > .

Go over Black Bear Pass! It is beautiful! I used to take my '84 4-Runner over it all the time when I lived there 20 some years ago. The lack off trees doesn't always mean harm to the environment due to mining. The area you pointed that you thought was damaged by mining is just treeless due to low soil, steep angles ,and you are getting close to tree line (altitude where trees just don't grow). Mining damage, which is rampant up there, is usually in lower areas where gold would collect, very rocky, zero soil, and zero plant life. Thanks so much for a blast to my past!

    • @terriec808

The area where the trees stop is called the "timberline" and its because of the altitude

@@terriec808 From wikipedia "The tree line is the edge of the habitat at which trees are capable of growing. It is found at high elevations and high latitudes. Beyond the tree line, trees cannot tolerate the environmental conditions (usually cold temperatures, extreme snowpack, or associated lack of available moisture). The tree line is sometimes distinguished from a lower timberline or forest line, which is the line below which trees form a forest with a closed canopy."

Think about it. They most likely were doing something back in the 70s according to the records. These buildings were most likely used to support the people doing the reclamation work. Lockers, time cards, first aid station, kitchens and housing. It took quite a crew to clean up these mountains. And it probably went on for ten years or so. From the looks of the construction, windows and doors, I believe they were constructed in the 40s or 50s. The toilet dates are on the lids underneath. Sometimes stamped, sometimes molded.

The man who owned the car was Richard (Dick) James, my grandfather. You almost nailed it! But you reversed the names; Dick James... Jimmy Dickens - pretty close. Unfortunately he died in that car when he flew through a switchback on the winding road (shown in the background of your video). His "gal" is my grandmother, who moved to the site with him when they realized he would be there for several years. He worked as the "Site Foreman" for 6 years until his death in 1979 at the age of 43.
Did you research the history of the location before your visit?
I think you should provide the fictional narrative on many more of your videos! I really enjoy listening to the story and hearing/watching your creativity in action.

When you looked out the upstairs window in building no. 2 my heart skipped a beat as I saw what I thought was your new truck rolling down the hill.

Same here, even though I saw your comment first I still got that "oh no" feeling.

KBPI is a Denver radio station. It has changed formats over the years but is still around.

@5:55 in the video that would be a battery charger for the miner's lights. I remember them from when my dad was a miner. House 2 and three are called Bunk House, its a miners term of where they all slept. for E.G. like military barracks,

In the hospital the first round thing with the gages on top was probably a sterilizer for things like surgical instruments and other items that needed to be clean. I've seen something similar that dated 1930.

I'm pretty sure the silver, cylinder looking thing in the first room was an autoclave used for sterilization of surgical instruments.

KBPI was the "Blowtorch of the Rockies". They are still on the air, at a different frequency. They brought all of the cool bands to Denver. And Budget was a semi-national chain of record stores. If my memory serves me correctly, they also had a selection of "smoking accessories". Love your channel.
