  • Today I'm joined by Marc Frankel of Long Island Watch for a new #watchtalk episode all about watches we like that are often loathed by other people. In this video we share 3 watch picks each, analyze why they're so divisive, why we like them, and why others don't. From the underappreciated, less flashy side of Hublot, and the understated, super dressy Patek Ellipse that's making a comeback on Keanu Reeve's wrist, to an Invicta Batman themed Joker watch inspired by a high-end Konstantin Chaykin watch of the same name, and the ins and outs of the homage watch industry, we cover a lot. Join us for another laidback, essential watch talk episode that might just blow your miiiiind! And please add a comment below to let us know which watches you absolutely love, but most people hate, and why.

The watch community often makes people who buy homage watches feel less - and feel guilty. Reviewers are mainly the culprits. So big kudos to you both for this - a refreshing inclusive vibe for the watch enthusiast world - cheers guys.

A great point, even if it is sadly true. But feat not, unless it's a fake watch, ALL enthusiasts are always welcome here.
I hate when others make people feel less that, utterly classless. We all love watches! I only wish the world ws a more compassionate place. Onwards and upwards regardlessly!

@@theurbangentry I agree ... I see so many that even bash on brands like Invicta (just an example) ... now there are many things I do not like about Invicta and that do not make it a watch for me (items for another discussion), however two things I do applaud is 1) their innovative (some may say outlandish - a matter of personal taste) designs and sizing that make them stand out and 2) the enthusiasm and excitement that their collectors bring.
It is this excitement and enthusiasm that should be applauded and encouraged.
I too in my mid-sized 52 watch collection have homages which I greatly enjoy along with my Swiss, Japanese and German watches and I also cringe at the too often snobbery and dare I say meanness some express at watches and their owners that are not to their taste or aesthetic.
My pet peeve I guess ... those that deem themselves better than others and treat other people rudely and accordingly.
I just want to quote Ozymandias by Shelley to them ... and smile knowingly.

But your channel has made me a watch enthousiast feeling part of a loving community, while my only watch is a Casio A-158 with beige watch face that I absolutely LOVE! I wear everything from 34 to 44. I had a Timex Camper that I think was a 34 or 35 that I used in Iraq on two deployments and it was great! Light weight and very rugged. It was perfect and never got caught on anything and would go under my uniform very easily. I still wear a small watch weekly. A great point was made here when mentioning the smart watch with a suit. I was definitely guilty of this, and it took seeing myself in photos to realize how out of place it looked. That being said, I found an old Timex dress watch, and after that I added two Invicta watches and most recently an Orient Bambino. I will keep an actual watch on my wrist moving forward.

They definitely need to drop prices by at least 40%. There's nothing in the quality of their products that suggests added value as opposed to competitors. An MR-G G-Shock is still better value, with the hand hammered and hand brushed elements they've got, along with their immortal durability.

    • @vladpiranha

@@m.e.p.r You absolutely can. Hublot doesn't develop their own movements, yet prices their products on the level of competitors' goods which have those R&D costs built in. I recently bought a Christopher Ward Sandhurst 1, which is a homage to the venerable Smiths W10. I absolutely love it and wear it a lot. It is officially approved by the British Department of Defense and has the British Army Coat of Arms and the W10 model designation on its back. IMO this is a great example of a successful and tasteful homage watch because it keeps the traditional design, acknowledges the original model and is approved by the authorities. On the top of that it is COSC certified and keeps time to +1 sec. per day and is built with an exceptional quality. If anyone disagrees I respect that but a homage watch like that brings a tremendous value to us the watch enthusiasts and access to history because the original is not in production any longer.

It's great to hear someone appreciate homage watches and affordable watches for what they are, and what some of them are is quite nice. I have a modest collection ranging from department-store Casios to a few close-to-high-end pieces, but the two I reach for most often are a Timex Expedition field watch, and a San Martin BB58 homage.
Disclaimer: I own a smart watch (a Fitbit Sense, that tracks steps and heart rate), but I wear it on an elastic strap around my ankle where nobody can see it. Sure, if I'm wearing shorts in the summer and my socks are too short, it looks like I'm wearing a house-arrest monitor, but better that than to be thought of as a smartwatch person. A man has to have SOME standards, after all.

Solid takes gentlemen. I agree with all of them. I especially agree with the idea that watches are moving towards smaller as the trend. I myself have purchased 2 watches in the past few months, one is larger, that said it's a tool watch diver so it makes sense it'd be larger for purpose, that said the other is a 1981 citizen eagle 7 basically an homage to a rolex day date 36mm fluted bezel gold plated with a jubilee bracelet. Thing is gorgeous and I find the same with going out that I want to get dressed up, I find if I'm going out for dinner or even sometimes just for the office (even though I work in something where no customers see me) it can still make me feel good to throw on a nice shirt, some nice jeans or chinos and a good mechanical watch either my Presage blue moon or the Citizen I spoke of earlier. Something about it puts me in a head space of feeling like a professional

I also like the older Hublot MDM they had a modern feel, I remember the ads series "a new adventure in time" from the 1980's I was very impressed by the design, they felt modern and expensive as a kid the full gold case seemed like unobtainium, it had that 1980's cheesy modern luxe feel, like the smoked glass tables with gold trims, the watches aged better than the coffee tables...

The Orfina Porsche Design that Maverick wears is actually the original version with a Valjoux 7750 movement, not the Lemania 5100. If you look at closeups of it during certain scenes, you can see the 30 min sub dial in the 12 o'clock position. When Tom Cruise was preparing for the first Top Gun, he wanted to wear a watch that was popular with military pilots at the time and of course the OPD and its variants were being issued to militaries around the world so he chose that. Incidentally, the watch he wears in Top Gun: Maverick is the exact same one he had in 1986.

Tom Cruise had the Valjoux 7750 in his Orfina PD another great Porsche design is the Eterna PD and the Heuer Pasadena PD. I definitely need to add a PD eventually. Great video pizan 🇮🇹

My wife recently gifted me a vast Invicta pilot's watch with a 5.0cm dial (I wouldn't say 50 mm when you're above this number). I was surprised at the weight and thickness. However, I decided to keep it and wear it. It looks good on my 7 1/2-inch wrist. It's my guilty pleasure. She said something like "I heard you were looking for a pilot's watch (in my mind it was a Laco, but she isn't into watches) and since you're a big guy (I'm not that big but it's clear to her that I am) you need a watch for your size (when I wear my 38mm watches she just shakes her head)."

I’ll defend Pagani a bit here. Now I can’t speak to customer care, because I have had no issue with the 2 watches I’ve bought of theirs, iff AliExpress, the homage of the Explorer II Polar, and the Paul Newman Daytona. But I was impressed with they way they seem to have taken the criticism of reviewers and tweaked their product. For example, the big critics for the the Explorer II, were the lack of a screw down crown, the GMT hand was wrong, stopping short and not having the little extender to both make it easier to read and more accurate to the Rolex, and the cyclops was always off center. All three of those came up in every review I watched. Pagani released a version 3 and fixed all those complaints. And that really impressed me. That is what made me final pull the trigger and order it. I had been wary, not having used AliExpress before and not really trusting it. But the watch came quickly, I think it was in a NJ warehouse, so not all the way from China.

I own 3 Invicta watches(8932A,32503 and 89270) and like all 3 of them---they're great watches with proven movements. For Mark, I love the Squale Corso Italiano--would love to get one one day.

I also like the original Hublot quite a lot, plus I like what the brand does with materials and finishes. To scratch that itch of the classic Hublot case, I just bought the Hublot Service Watch off eBay and I love it.

Really good to see you and Marc together again, TGV! Of the watches that I have that seem to get the least love but that I adore would be hands down my LeJour Lemans. It is absolutely phenomenal, but almost no one knows what it is or its significance. Valjoux7750 movement, specs that will blow your mind for a auto chrono, probably the best value in an automatic chronograph available. Yet almost no one knows what it is or likes it. If it said Tudor or Rolex people would be losing their mind over it, but even though it has the same movement as the Big Block with even better specs.....crickets. Fine with me....makes it even more unique and even more special!
Awesome to see you both doing well. Onward and upward!!!

I love many aliexpress options and I don’t care what anyone thinks. I always at least look there when I am looking for a specific kind of watch, I know I may find a well specced and well finished watch for my money.

Absolutely great video again. I really enjoy you both discussing watches together as they are so informative and fun to watch. I had a discussion with my granddaughter only a couple of weeks ago as she was thinking of buying another smart watch. I said to her that they were a useful tool watch but they would have no market value if she wanted to sell one on and that technology changes all the time and the watch she may buy will be out of date in a few months when something better may come out as they do with mobile smart phones for instance. She previously had a smart watch but it failed on her after six months of use. She has now gone back to wearing a Pulsar solar watch I gifted to her a couple of years ago for Christmas. She loves it.
Thanks again TGV and Marc and I look forward to your next video together.

The only homage watch I own is the Invicta vintage Pro Diver 1953.
Because it is inspired by the first Submariner, most people don’t even recognize it as a Rolex homage. Because this model didn’t have mercedes hands or crown guards yet.

Thank you TGV and Mark so much for such a wonderful discussion!! I really enjoyed your humor and bringing light on this topic!! I personally have recently bought somewhat of a homage watch that has a wonderful dial. This watch is the Orient Sun and Moon v3 in white dial/stainless case. I love the Roman numeral dial and the sun and moon complication on it. Although it is a very large watch at 43.5mm, roughly 13mm thick the dial is outstanding and from a distance reminds me of a complicated Breguet watch by design. Stay healthy and well as always!
If you have time, will you please let me know what you think of Orient Sun and Moon v3?
Ps. I love the sword in the background, is it a mock sword or is it a true fighting sword?

Good call on smaller dress watches. 34 is a great size for a mens dress watch - btw that's what the original Swatch Gent watches are so it was still popular in 80s 90s and not just mid century. Great video as always

I hope so. I'm bored of divers and most sports watches. I'm planning on picking up a 28mm Seiko tank. Waiting on a full grain homemade leather strap I bought from a guy that makes them in the the UK for my Seiko SNKL23. Also maybe a moonphase complication. Orient has some nice models. Great show!

Great content. I actually did take a second look at that joker and go…. Yeah it is cool. Maybe for a watchbox instead of a wrist but still cool. Marc, thanks for the Islander “rip offs” Sarcasm there…. They’re not rip offs at all ;) I’m no lawyer either but you took a well recognized case shape and added perfection to the movement, dial, bezel and bracelet. And you did it for less Than the ridiculous secondary market is now charging for the SKX. If anything, more people should thank you because you made something that was inaccessible into something that is accessible (AND BETTER COMPONENTS!!!!). Always thankful for your product!

I'm like Marc and love the engineering part. A favourite watch of mine tells time in binary - rows of little yellow LEDs that light up when the button is pushed and you must read the hours and minutes in binary.
But I'm an IT nerd and I can read binary 🙂
