I am becoming a huge fan of two off the shelf movements, the Miyota 9015, which is thinner than Sellita or ETA equivalents and the SW 330-2 GMT, which has a larger power reserve and is pretty thin too. Very underrated!
I totally get that, there's something reassuring knowing they are easy and affordable to fix or maintain, such troopers too.

Nice seeing you guys together and running to all of the types of watches that I own. Including manual wind, lever set, bumper, space view that was my Uncle’s, quartz, solar quartz and with radio reference. Still want a spring drive!

After 50yrs of liking & using watches, this is the 1st time I’ve actually found out how quartz watches work.
I’ve had an eco-drive for 8yrs now and it’s never missed a beat in that time.
Technology is superb when you hear it explained.
I still love winding up my posh watch but for simplicity eco drive is superb.
You two guys are great and I listen with great interest.
Shame I never did the same at school.
I enjoy the fact that you show a Squale Sub in your intro, which happens to be my first automatic watch!
As an engineer, I love these collaborations! One other movement type is from HYT I believe. It’s a fluid and bellows based design that is totally unique.

You forgot the Grand Seiko constant force tourbillon movement! It's even more precise than Spring Drive, but fully automatic. The prototype movement is such a beauty in black, bronze and blued hues! They say it's +1 second a day, but they also said Spring Drive is +2 Seconds a day when it's really 4 seconds a month. So the constant force movement might be really 2 seconds a month fast.
Genuinely learnt from listening to the two of you. The level of innovation starting to emerge is incredible. Thanks for your collaborations

I'm so glad you and Mark are putting out videos. There my favorite watch videos. One of the only long length watch videos I stuck with till the end.
Enjoyed this relaxed, unscripted format. Two mates chatting about watches. The only thing missing was TGV making a couple of cappuccinos for the coffee table using a gaggia classic, served with some cantucci.
I have to say Tristano, you should have your brother Marc on the show more often. He is really good at explaining things.

Very cool video! I'd love to see a similar video explaining the difference of mechanical complications in movements. Like perpetual calendar, or column wheel/vertical chronographs, maybe even what's the difference or benefit of silicon parts like escapements.

I always look forward to the episodes with Mark. You two have a great chemistry together that males for really enjoyable videos (as well as informative). Regarding the history of the automatic movement, our "trusted" friend Wikipedia had this to say. "The earliest credible evidence for a successful design is the watch made by the Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet, who lived in Le Locle. In late 1776 or early 1777, he invented a self-winding mechanism for pocket watches using an oscillating weight inside the watch that moved up and down." Prior to Perellet, there were several watchmakers that claimed to have created a self-winding movement, but there is no credible evidence to back up their claims. Early automatic movements were used for pocket watches. Automatic wrist watches came post World War I. According to Wikipedia, "'Bumper' watches were the first commercially successful automatic watches." John Harwood patented the bumper movement in 1923. The bumper movement watches were first produced with the help of Swiss watch manufacturer FORTIS and went on sale in 1928. Glycine released their first automatic watches (an improvement on the bumper movement), which became the world's first widely-produced automatic watches." Not to be outdone, Rolex states on their website, "In 1931, Rolex invented and patented the world's first self-winding mechanism with a Perpetual rotor" which was used in the Oyster Perpetual. AMAZING video! I wouldn't mind seeing another episode related to movements. It'd be particularly interesting to learn about ETA and the different movements that emerged from those designs and seeing you and Marc riff on the different movements out there. I was reading how Sternglas is now developing their "Swiss-Made" watches with Sellita movements now instead of Fossil's STP movements. I believe both are based on ETA, but I love that there are idiosyncratic differences between all of these movements, but they share a common ancestry. Love the vid. Hope you all are well!

I really enjoyed this! Learned a lot! I would love to see yiu guys cover the Defy Labs movements from Zenith, as far as I unferstand it it is super accurate and an innovation very different from spring movements.
After years, jeez decades, in the hobby you guys still manage to teach me so much. Very entertaining! I would be interested to hear your opinions on what the ultimate apocalypse watch would be? Of all the movements out there, which would be the last one standing without service or access to parts?

Seiko Kinetics use a capacitor, not a battery. The capacitors last maybe 15 years, I had to change mine (easy and cheap). They're good. Last a very long time when fully charged unless the capacitor is failing.
Excellent video gents, very informative. The information about these movements make watch collecting even more interesting. You mentioned the Pulsar LCD, a Hamilton company at that time. Pulsar, now owned by Seiko since 1978 is a criminally ignored brand by many watch reviewers! They make great affordable Chronographs including one I bought a, couple of weeks ago, the PZ 5115X a solar quartz excellent quality, great motor sports themed dial and around $250 if you can find one, this particular one seems only available in 2 countries, Turkey, where I am and Australia. Have to admit, until I got this watch Pulsar was very much under my radar too.

You guys were discussing the first full rotor automatic movement. Take a look at the Felsa Bidynator movement. I think it was the first to wind in both directions of the rotor.

The atomic clock. There are various types but they set our time standard, keep the internet synchronised and keep you located correctly on the Earth via GPS. There are 4 atomic clocks on each GPS satellite. The timing signal is also adjusted for the effect of special and general relativity, otherwise the location would be out by 100s of metres.

Did some research, John Harwood was the first to invent and develop the automatic Hammer Winder which was a rotor that bounced back and forth on buffer springs in a 270° arc. First implementation for mass production was in the Fortis Harwood automatic in 1926. Then in 1931 Rolex created the automatic 360° rotor we know today.
I love this hobby so much because it's exciting seeing brands innovate. I hope Seiko or someone develops a replacement for Lithium ion batteries such as using Carbon Nanotubes creating a new era for technology. In theory, it would be longer lasting and wayyy thinner than lithium ion.

Not only is a Acutron an amazing watch but did you know that 360 Hz if you put a guitar tuner on it is a perfect F sharp as an instrument maker I can tell you that F sharp is a sacred key or tone and it makes perfect sense of course that a watch would generate a fibonacci -esk tone as hours minutes seconds solstice days months years revolutions around the sun even our very heartbeats are all one great related frequency. Hey! great video Guys! Please keep up the good work… cheers!!!
I hate to show my age, but I remember the introduction of the Bulova Acutron (I was about 7 y/o at the time). It was a true aspirational watch, advertised on TV and in magazines. Glad to see they're still a prized collectors item in 2022.
