      Before driving for Lancia, Walter was warned that the cars were designed light and the roll cages might not be too strong. Walter decided to sign with Lancia and told friends and relatives that he would not crash. He drives at another level but never has any issues with crashes.
      As the Jeremy Clarkson video about Walter and Lancia winning the world championship pointed out, the fragile Lancias held up better than the Audi more than a few races including brutal Acropolis rally. I would bet the Lancias also held up because Walter did not overdrive or trash them. No mistakes. What an amazing man.

    It's incredible, Walter moves this Porsche as if it were a slow delivery van delivering parts. You'd think he was driving to the bakery to get his rolls. Every steering angle is perfect, no corrections, no wild turning of the steering wheel. With a stoic calmness he moves the Porsche towards the limit, I understand why Micha could close his eyes and just feel the perfect flow of the ideal line. At 77, Walter remains at a world-class level. Simply unbelievable. Thanks for sharing🙏.

      @hajotge12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, Walter Röhrls signature move is when he shows how he thinks about driving a car perfectly: He always shows how he handles the steering wheel with to fingers. It is always about the perfect balance ... and that makes it look like "he was driving to the bakery" ...
      There is another video (th-cam.com/video/tt00Zs_j6Vw/w-d-xo.html) where 35 years younger Christoph Breuer drives the track 30 seconds faster than grandpa Walter. He is (audibly) a bit harsh to the tyres and the physics of the car at some points. Not the "two fingers at the steering wheel" approach.

  • @pakjohn48

    I am the same age as Walter and I know that my driving reflexes would not allow me to drive like he did here, whatever my skill level. I feel it a privilege just to have been able to follow Walter Röhrl on television during his prime (whenever that is - seems to be still ongoing),
      I've met more known race drivers (or at least known within the racing community) during my visits at Die Schleife through decades of Touristenfahrten, but meeting Dr. Röhrl in person would most probably leave me completely speechless and get completely stuck in the questions that I had otherwise collected for him over 40 years.
      But it is really lucky that we have YT today, who since the beginning has meant that I have gotten to know him better as a person. His humble approach to everything and self-effacing personality and always matter-of-fact approach to things.
      A man in complete mental balance. A man in complete control. Who takes things step by step.
      And a person who you both feel could be your closest friend and at the same time on a completely different planet, to which you never get a ticket yourself. And know it with a completely settled feeling.

      @@stenovitzI met him last year at the finish line of the WRC Central Europe 2023. He was easily walking by the Photo finish line and barely wasn‘t recognized by the other Motorsports enthusiasts because of the Show in Track.
      He even took his time to bow down to a golden Retriever dog leashed to a pole just to comfort it a little. Totally based. Short time after two of my friends and me were asking for a Photo with our for such a long time idol.
      He took his time for every one of us - not without insisting on being a totally normal guy instead of a demi god 😂 We 3 were so stunned, nearly paralyzed.

      I disagree. "It's enough" is a statement of proficiency, he has nothing to prove. I can imagine that a road car like that compared to race cars he was driving in the past is night and day different. More power, smoothness and efficiency than any track car back in the day and it's available at your local Porsche dealer, not a bespoke race car. Perhaps a little envy of what's available now but I don't think it's real sadness.

    • @willwahl9225
      @willwahl9225 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @Bernard: Just saw this post and your comment. Allow me to share my interpretation.
      Walter has not got enough yet. 'Enough' after this lap he wants to state that anybody in doubt knows he could have done it faster if he had chosen to ... which he has not.
      Walter still has and always will have the competitive attitude. Thats just his soul. The sadness in his voice is just him being the understatement personified like he has always been.
      This guy is a legend. While he delivered legendary races and times he had always been the cool customer who frowned upon the champagne shower and the cheering. This guy is just one cool dude; perhaps whatever tension other drivers released with cheering and partying, Walter kept it inside and used it for the next race and the next lap.
      True original this man. Love him.
      So - dont worry Bernard. He aint done yet. You still see him on Berg Rallies in Austria and other stuff. This guy will go on as long as he lives. He has more to prove now than before - to himself - that he still can do what he likes best: Delivering damn good times and getting the most out of the cars he is driving.

      He's a long way from the limit and he says as much at the end, amazing driver and it would be interesting to know how much he actually has lost to age and reaction if he threw caution to the wind and gave it a full attempt. Nice to see he still derives great enjoyment from a twisty flowing road 🤙

      For his age he's still incredibly fast. I can't imagine that there are more people at his age, with naturally declining reflexes, who can ride the NOS faster than Walter Röhrl. I like driving on the racetrack but I'm sure that at that age I won't be able to go much faster than a traffic island.

      This was not his max. He dialed in at a speed he could do all day with people. He could have cut quite a number of seconds if he had so decided.

    I just love coming back to this video. This is the most elegant run I've ever seen. It's like car completely understood what Walter wanted from it and Walter was so connected to the car as it was his own body. I can't even describe it. Just simply outstanding. Thank you for this video.

    Comfortable was an understatement, the way you closed your eyes to feel the track and the turns and your subtle glances at turn entry speeds even looked gleeful. You look like in deep meditation on that lap. The innocence of that smile and just shows the ride you were on with one of the fastest men in the world! Amazing. Thank you for taking us with you on the experience!

    the funniest thing about this video is following face expressions. Misha looks somehow detached, as if he's under some substance. Slow blinking (up to almost falling asleep, lol), constant smile. While Walter looks totally engaged: as a true racing driver, eyes are in full focus, almost no blinking at all. But mouth shows all the joy, excitement and pressure of the moment.

Rohrl, Kussmaul and Preuninger are 3 men who dedicated their lives to the pursuit of nothing less than motorsport perfection that could be driven on the street by mortals. You are indeed a lucky man Misha to have met him and been driven through your garden in their latest masterpiece.

    80's Rally as a teen I followed Walter in the Audi's and man did he make them Dance, Acropolis Rally was where he really put on a show and I still have footage I watch from time to time so for me although a treat watching a tarmac lap of the ring it is a bit anticlimactic even though its obvious Walter still has "It" :-)
    Walter Rõhrl is a living Legend

    Hello Misha. Thank you for not speaking while driving. What you have achieved is that both you and Walter simply enjoy the ride. Meanwhile, old memories were playing in Walter's head. And for you the situation was simply too good to interrupt by speaking. You didn't "bother" Walter and let him relax. This trip will go down in history. No annoying questions, just enjoy the moment.
    You honored and enjoyed the trip, like a classical music fan in a Mozart concert, and we did it too.
    That was very respectful. The most beautiful drive in the Nordschleife that I have seen, no stress, peace, one with nature, the car and the track.

    What I cherish about Misha's driving is how smooth he's driving fast. This is what I see with Walter, but a completely different expression of it. That flow he generates, going with the car instead of fighting it. In German, "auf Zug bleiben". He seemed to be struggling somewhat, which is understandable, as he alluded to, lack of routine with not having been to the Ring for years, plus inevitable effects of age - but still, what is seen here is a driving lesson, for everyone.
    As for the experience / honor, 0:53 - nothing to add.
