    Definitely feels like the tube's little brother!

    Shields Road used to be my local station when I lived in Glasgow. The hump on the platforms is from the days when the system was cable hauled - it meant the trains could get started before grabbing onto the moving cable.

    Govan is pronounced "Guvvan". Also, alight at Partick to visit the Riverside transport museum, where you can find a preserved original Subway train from before the 1977-80 rebuild.

    Welcome to Scotland! The line is planned for modernisation and extension, at last! Kelvin bridge is where Glasgow university is based.

      Oh, really? Awesome! I know of the new rolling stock due to be introduced next year, and if the line gets extended that'd be very cool! Since the subway has never had an extension since it was built 😂

      Actually Hillhead is the more important station for access to Glasgow University and sees more traffic. This is why it has a platform for each circle because of the greater footfall. Incidentally if you'd exited at Hillead you'd gave seen the lovely tiled artwork at the top of the escalators in the ticket office... it's by local artist Alasdair Gray and depicts the area, featuring local people and sayings. The station is on Byres Road which has some nice, independent coffee shops (although the one attached to the station is a Starbucks!)

      @@NickBadley There have been proposals for extensions of the system over the years but these always fizzled out! One of the more recent ones was a branch from the south west section to Glasgow Airport... the problem really is to do with the size of the trains, really not suitable for passengers with lots of luggage! The system as it stands fits pretty well into the overall transport infrastructure of the city, particularly as direct connections to main line rail were provided at Partick and Buchanan Street (for Queen Street sration) during the first modernisation at the end of the 1970s.

    Did the 'clockwork orange' - one of it's nicknames - some time ago. Great little video. Well done. Love your dialogue. I'm severe sight impaired, and don't see everything in a video as perfect as I'd like to be able to; so a good clear, yet interesting description (with an easy to listen to voice of course), is always good. Keep up the good work.

    Great video, I've never used this system so it was a good insight to what it is like. How much was the fare? Also, I wonder, the stations with two platforms, one island with a screen and the second platform on the outside, were these originally just the one island platform for both directons but changed to allow for safer operaton with more passengers? Makes me think of Angel on the Northern Line in London.

    • @NickBadley
      @NickBadley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As for the fare, I used an all-day, subway-only travelcard, which was £4.20.
      And as for the stations with the mix of platforms, yeah, I had a similar theory! It would definitely make sense.

    I have a quick question about the Glasgow Subway
    My wife and I are visiting Glasgow shortly and are wondering whether there is a system to use the buses and the Subway, much like the Oyster card system in London and the daily ticket in Edinbugh.
    I see there’s a Subway smartcard you can apply for, but it looks like this is only valid on the Subway, with a £3 maximum daily total. That seems perfect, but if the buses cost extra, it would maybe be sensible just to use the Subway on one day, then maybe only the bus on another.
    Having the flexibility to use both would be a better option though.

    • @NickBadley
      @NickBadley  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe there is this thing called the "ZoneCard"

      @@brianmorrison9168 if you haven’t visited yet, buy a Roundabout ticket. Valid for all trains in Glasgow and subway too, no buses though, however buses are unreliable and unfavourable compared to our extensive suburban rail network

      @brianmorrison9168 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ajsim6611 Thank you for your reply. We are actually going in a couple of weeks time.
      I've recently heard about the Roundabout ticket, which seems a great idea if folk are travelling out of the city centre. We haven't yet decided where we'll go during our 4 day stay, so this is certaonly an option. I would have liked a river trip, but I'm not sure these are still running. I travelled to Rothsey as a kid with my parents, via Greenock.
      I applied for and received two smart cards for the Subway .. funny they are free if bought in advance, even get posted to you .. but if you buy from a ticket machine you have to pay for them. We'll add credit before we go.
      Regards from Whitley Bay

    • @ajsim6611
      @ajsim6611 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianmorrison9168 No problem, Glasgow doesn't have any specific river cruises like London, but you still get the normal ferries such as the Rothesay one you mentioned, if you want a day trip further out you could go to Millport/Cumbrae via the ferry from Largs which is about 50 minutes on the train from Glasgow if I remember correctly. It's a nice island with bike hire or walking routes, great to explore. Hope you have a good time :)
