I love this stuff. You explain things and I'm thinking....yep, yep, uh huh, yep, yep, ....wait a minute.... oh yeah, yep......
    CAT parts man 74-09.
I have touched each of these past. They were brand new and covered with Cosmoline.

Ole School mechanic myself, you are doing a great job identifying the causes n related problems. In today's shops, most are misdiagnosed n just parts replacement mechanics. Not many mechanics could go as far as you have without guidance imho. If a guy doesn't understand how equipment works especially under load, they can't accurately determine the cause of the problem. Enjoyed watching your video, n probably the first time I've watched one that doesn't involve cuss words every other word.

"if we survive...." Well it's great to see you working on something to keep your sanity, then be able to watch the dog go insane attacking a sprinkler. Absolutely enjoy each episode!!

A bearing went bad on that left side final drive. That's what chipped those teeth. A discussion was probably had about plenty of mating surface left on that gear, and just the bearing and seal were replaced. I've seen that before with older machines. Like how much do you really want to spend on this old machine ? was the question being asked.

I has thinking the exact same thoughts when Matt posted the initial photo. It was probably an expensive part pack in the day, plus you had the cost of down time.

I have had a bearing failure in a final and the gear picked up a bearing and took out teeth on the gears. Might be old damage and it was put back together with that damage to the pinion gear which it would still work with the small pieces out of the teeth.

    • @robertbyrne7241

      That's what I thought.
Maybe they replaced the big gear from the outside? Removing the track, drive sprocket, etc. They couldn't do the small gear from there, so didn't change it?

I am enjoying the failure analysis in addition to you making tools you need. When you said that you have new seals that fit, it reminded me of Carl the Bushwood assistant greenskeeper: "...when you die, on your deathbed, you will have total consciousness...so I got that going for me."

Was stoked to see a new video! It’s coming together nice! Also - I just bought a box of 100 black HD nitrile work gloves off of Amazon for like 25$. Worth it for sure to have quality work gloves especially when handling heavy grease/oils and cleaners.

    • @sven-erikviira1872
      @sven-erikviira1872 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

A trick I use. I wear 3 layers of blue nitrile gloves. If top layer breaks I can easily swap out the glove without fighting sweaty and grippy hands. When I finish the work, I toss outer layer and leave inner two layers on corner of the table. Next day i first put on pair of clean new gloves and top them with yesterdays two layers of cloves. I like clean fingernails...

That gear damage is old and was probably caused by the small bearing failing. The original repair cleaned out most of the bits, installed a new bearing and re-used the damaged gear. Given that the dozer will probably not do 10,000 hours in future that gear would have held up.

    Matt,
A little trick to remember when that final clip (eye gouger) will not seat properly from uneven thickness or just a hair too thick.
Take a pane of old junk glass and rub on an area on the glass with - valve grinding compound-. Now lay the ring on the glass and relax to music while doing “figure eight” patterns to even the ring and reduce thickness. Also a good way to polish off old crud. Push down evenly and move your hold down area often. Use plenty of VGC.
Good Luck Matt, & Merry Christmas!

As soon as you said that my mind said “Cotton Eye Joe”. Great!! I suspect this is all prior damage. Hertzian (contact) stress causes pitting even without foreign bodies being present. It’ll be fine for a hobby dozer. All looks very clean indeed.
