This has been an absoulutely fantastic series to follow. It's kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way, right from the beginning evaluation in the woods/driveway where the hope still existed that It would start back up and drive away. The dozer turned out absolutely beautiful, and it seems to run like a top!

I remember the first time that I saw a D4. I thought that it was so small, like a toy version of the D6s, 7s, and bigger than what I normally worked on. They had pony motor starters. I enjoy watching your work.
I have just watched the dozer rebuild in about three weeks, yes at times I was watching this when I should have been doing something else, this has been great entertainment for a semi-retired 62 year old with a garage full of light machines that need fixing. Thank you and well done.

Dear Matt, I am an artist living and working in Portland OR. I have been following your CAT D4 project since the day you got it. The kind of individual are, how you approach a problem, and how you work has turned this machine into, not so much as farm equipment, as it is a Kinetic Sculptured Art-Project. A great display of persistence, working/thinking thru problems, and the ultimate feeling of delayed satisfaction (job well done), a better high than any drug, as opposed to instant gratification
Great job...and video series! I am eager to see you pushing some dirt with it! What I think the series illustrates is just how, not exactly easy, but "do-able" it can be to drag these old machines out of the dirt and put them back to work with restorations performed in home, or farm, workshops. Still fully capable, mechanically simple, often massively over-built and devoid of the finicky electronics that plague modern machines making them increasingly impractical for small operators. They really do seem to be a valuable resource rusting away in barns and fields that shouldn't be overlooked not just for antique equipment collectors but for those who'd like to put them to work for weekend projects. If the several 'tube channels devoted to vlogging similar projects are reflective of a bigger effort I'd have to think it would become financially attractive to manufacture replacement parts for areas like the undercarriage. That should help keep restoration and maintenance costs in line a bit as serviceable used kit becomes harder to find and new-old stock fully depletes.
Saw this in my recommended. Got about 1 minute in before I decided to just start from the beginning of the playlist and binge it all. What an interesting journey filled with a lot of injuries, broken parts, and sacrificial paint.
I’ve enjoyed this series. I learned to operate an old Cat D7 cable lift. It was a late 40s model. I was 16 at the time. I haven’t been near a dozer since that summer. We cleared 40 acres of junky bushes and planted grass for dairy cows. It was a great experience.
Excellent job Matt. Fixing and Bringing back to this 65 years old tractor without any helper, and lots of modifications, 2 years hard work, brilliant. Your family and friends should proud of you, you deserve reward.

I had a 1949 D47U elect-start pony wide trac w/ROP and oversize blade that I used to clear and level property, put in driveway and excavate crawlspace for my house and shop I built several years ago. Great little Cat. Did everything I asked of it after I replaced the engine clutch and a couple of hydraulic hoses. Was sorry to sell it when I was done. Beautiful job on your rebuild! Thanks for the memories.
New sub here from North, Central BC Canada. My neighbor has a D4 Gearjammer I have used for years. Old girl Aint what she used to be eh. Still though it always starts and can push as hard as she ever did. Sure like the way you have done this refit. Straightening up years of others modifications and cobbled up repairs is really a feel good thing when we get them back working as they should and all the old eyesores cleaned up. I am a retired HD Machinist, Fabricator/Mechanical (Logging equip) 50 plus years of heavy iron behind me. Stop by when you can new friend. Take care eh.

Excellent restoration on the cat! whew takes a helluvua man to run one of these old cats all day! Ive ran a 1960s ish cat 933 loader and boy howdy what a workout!!! I only lasted about 4 hrs before I was needing a break!

I am in the middle of restoring a boat, you have been quite the inspiration to keep me going. It's very easy to get something started and let it go to the wayside halfway through. Thank you for keeping me going, you did an outstanding job making the pieces fit. Keep up the good work.
I'm actually kinda sad this build is over, the whole thing start to finish was really satisfying. I can't wait for the excavator build I bet its going to be just as good.

I was thinking when you were putting the brush cage on that "would be nice to have an excavator to help with this, wonder where one could be, lol". Excellent restoration on the cat! whew takes a helluvua man to run one of these old cats all day! Ive ran a 1960s ish cat 933 loader and boy howdy what a workout!!! I only lasted about 4 hrs before I was needing a break!
