Speedy It depends how you look at it. The ATAT was at first deployed during the clone wars and it was meant to be Imposing, have an overhead view of the field, and armored enough to survive getting shot at due to its sheer size. In this respect, the ATAT surpassed the ATTE. When it came time to use in the Empire, who mainly had to deal with untrained rebels, protesters, and other mostly civilians, who would flee at the mere sight of such a beast, while the ATTE wouldn’t inspire as much fear. If you break their spirits, they won’t think of ways to beat you. That was the thought process, which aligned with Palpatine. As for the LAAT, even though it had build itself a reputation, it was still pricey to manufacture and maintain, far more than other Imperial troop transports, and it could not justify itself being a multi-role war machine when there was no war going on.
The Empire didn't have to do troop landings under heavy AA fire nearly as often as the Republic, so the LAAT wasn't as useful while still being a pain to maintain or train pilots for.
@@bogustoast22none25 The issue being, they forgot that fear is caused by the ability to crush them, not a scary appearance without the power to back it up... the scariest thing in a fight is an opponent who you know is capable of destroying you easily even if they don't look the part, and that raw power can make even unassuming vehicles terrifying if their reputation is allowed to accumulate.
Not to mention that the LAAT Gunship continued to serve well after the Clone Wars by both the Empire and Rebel Alliance. The biggest problem I have with the LAAT/i is one scene from Attack of the clones just after the clones and their gunships rescue the Jedi from the arena, just after Anakin directs the pilot to fire on the fuel cells of a Hardcell ship, he spots Count Dooku and tells the pilot to fire on him. The pilot says he can't because they ran out of missiles Even if that's true, the ship still has two chin mounted cannons, two door gunners, four wing mounted turrets, two dorsal mounted mass drivers and a tail gunner, not to mention all of the clones inside with their own blaster rifles to shoot at him Were THEY dead as well Also, how the hell do the clones and Jedi able to stay inside with just those subway style ceiling handholds holding them in? Especially with the side doors open
That's definitely a plot hole they didn't even try to address. The only possible explanation I can think of is that the Gunships had a limited power source and they were going at full speed just to keep up with Dooku (if they could go faster they would've tried to outrun and cut him off), meaning if the pilot redirected energy to the ball turret lasers and the chin blasters, they would have to reduce Engine speed and power, which would cause them to lose the pursuit of Count Dooku if they missed. Rockets/Missiles on the other hand would be a quick burst of power to launch and then that was it. Still, you shouldn't have to rely on fans thinking of explanations and theories to explain apparent gaps in logic. If my explanation was correct, it could have easily been solved with a quick exchange of "What about the blasters?!" and "We'll lose speed if we power them up. The target will get away" and then Obi-Wan ordering them to maintain pursuit.
@@Lazarultos The problem with that is that, as far as I can tell, the ship and the blasters use two completely different types of fuel sources as far as I can tell Blasters run on tibana gas, this applies to hand blasters all the way up to ships turbolasers.
