      Wow, thank you for pinning my comment. My response that day took over two hours to compile before sending - I thought it was that important being accurate. Fact is, dredging can bring in treasure.

    • @sniper10666
      @sniper10666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well being new to beach hunting we don’t have the dredging problem here in Australia so we are kind of lucky in that way- although items will be spaced out as you say and your theory has sense but looking at your diagram of the beach there are still spaces that have been missed and possibly good targets there, I think a grid pattern will turn out more items if you can mark them buy placing a towel or something that will square out a spot and do one grid at a time but I’m only just learning so will have to try that myself

      Good morning. I have been looking into to buying my first detector finally. I have been leaning toward the Equinox 800 or the Legend. I know you hold the 800 as the gold standard but is the Legend equivalent. Also I've been wondering if I should buy a pulse induction machine instead since depth seems to be a big concern among other factors of course. Could you please provide some guidance please ... Thank you

    • @MetalDetectingNYC
      @MetalDetectingNYC  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christian59246 I own a pulse induction machine (beach hunter 300) . I don’t see an advantage on depth. If you buy through Kellyco use my code NYC at checkout and you will save 10%.

    As an experienced beach hunter, I have found many coin spills and rings in the “sitting zone” where many are in the water where the waves are not really hitting them hard but yet hard enough to wash things out of their pockets! So go when the public is active an observe this area! Great tips in this video, many I also follow! 👍

    Just to add to your ring loss tips -I have done almost every kind of detecting out there. I am primarily a beach hunter now and primarily a water hunter - I usually like to hunt at sunrise 1st and sunset 2nd when least amount of people are in water in season - off season its a free for all. If I go some place for the day and in summer can hit low tide at sunrise -lets say at 6-7am - in summer you will get sunset around same times 6-7pm - this is the best. I will hunt for like 4 hrs AM low - take a break and depending on the beach will either hang out and watch where people go - then hit few hrs before low or depending how the high tide is and amount of people will get in at high and then take a break before low. If you can go to a beach you love to hit or want to hit...if you can try and spend the day and watch where the action is. Yes as Merrill says a lot of your beach jewelry is gonna be lost by swimmers. I have returned a bunch of items over the years and to swimmers, The other way is people throwing balls, (1 example-I returned a class ring lost 50 yrs ago - she was throwing a football with some guys)- people splashing each other (example - returned a 5 diamond ring to woman that as soon as she walked in to waist deep water - she splashed her husband and it flew off). Just standing in water and waving hands thru the water (example - woman was standing in waist deep water talking to a friend and swirling her hands in the water and lost her silver bracelet- I found and returned) playing with their little children and babies in the shallows - like Merrill says - sun lotion - mothers cover their real young ones in sun lotion and hands become slippery and then play with their kids and rings come right off. If you hunt in waters - try in front of those rocks jetties - yes you will find all kinds of fishing tackle - sinkers etc. but I know many guys that shy away from them for this reason - I don't - I have gotten some really nice rings in front of them - reasons - some people do jump or dive off of them during high tide or when no one is fishing on them - you must have seen people throwing rocks off of them - I have found engagement rings and wedding bands off of them - divorce? break up? - if an old beach - new jetty? or newer - so older finds from before they put them in? Oh - like Merrill I scrap a lot of my metals - I get tons of lead near those rock jetties. I have well over 500 lbs of sinkers in last like 15 yrs . I will sell when I can no longer hunt.

    I have always had an interest in metal detecting so I recently purchased an Mine Lab Equinox 800 and brought it with me to South Padre TX. Had no clue how to hunt and stumbled across your videos. I like your explanation of the criss cross pattern and coin line near the water. I applied what I learned and now have 5 rings ( two with diamonds) and about $10 in US coins. Thanks for the video help. I subscribed and look forward to more videos.

    Thanks for the video man. Really good knowledge you're passing on here. I watched the other video you linked followed by this one and I'm really excited to give your method a try.
    I'm based over in the UK and started metal detecting back in August last year. Picked up a garret ace 250 and quickly learnt that it's a cool little machine but really struggled on the wet sand. So I picked up a vanquish 440 in January and finally got out with it recently on the beach and it was a dream on the wet sand.
    I'll be out in a week or so on the wet sand and will definitely be giving this method a go.

    They dredge sand from way out at NJ and in past friends have found ship wreck relics and coins
    in certain places that was brought in - I have one friend that has found spanish silver from wrecks and Rev war and CW items from other wrecks that were carrying supplies. Friends have found Spanish silver and gold on a few Fla. beaches also dredged in...that being said I know many others - like you have said where they piled5ft or more sand with nothing in it and guys have to wait for storms to take all that new stuff back out to be able to get anything old. A guy posted a few days ago on the TNET a pillar dollar found on beach where they replenished - might be a NJ beach - he did not say

    Grid work the beach or bottom rings can be found anywhere we have found them going up to the parking lot and when you think your done give it one more try and. Boom ring in the scoop , also outer edges can produce finds but it still needs to be there and get your coil acrossed it , love your show even though im a freshwater hunter , some of this advice can apply to fresh water As well . good advice and thanks for sharing because many detectorist wont be so generous. Hi Merril. I trusted your advice on your tutorial videos and got a Nokta Makro Simplex posted from an Italy shop to South Ireland . It is a great machine, and never fails to locate metals ,even under flat stones ! The only problem I had was that the coil filled up with sea water making it heavier . I've since tried to mastic all the coil joints. Which worked for a while. Now for the finds . I've done about 20 beaches in the style prescribed ( self taught ) over the last 6 months and found mostly small rusty stuff, 2 steel rings , about 60 corroded coins of 1970 to 1990 and €15 in modern change . Then I spent €350 in petrol ! Its an expensive time consuming game ! I bought the Nokta Makro pulse dive land pointer for €150 plus postage (€15?)and the Simplex was €320 plus postage (€20?) So costing so far I've spent the €855 to get €15 !! As far as signal mode goes I've found it best on field 2 mode with low iron bar. It seems to work just in and out of the shore waves with that , and good on dry sand or earth . I always check it with my boot clip to see its working . Definitely a lot to learn and a lot of patience and time needed , along with pre - planning .my oldest coin was s 1920 silver shilling , and a 1943 hen penny ,which proves amongst other coins mentioned that no one else had detected the beaches before me ! The fun of it all !!!

    good tips .. cant stress enough about reading sand movement ..out here at the lake we rely on wind speed and directions to know what beach might have a cut or trough .. sure in the summers the next morning you can get lucky from trolling for fresh drops but reading the sand movement and knowing what to look and feel for is key to success ..

    Thanks so much for your tips. I live on the West Coast of New Zealand and unfortunately our beaches are all highly mineralized black iron sand. I can manage to detect on some of these beaches in my area but certainly not all of them. Our beaches here don't get anywhere near as populated in NZ as in your country, so that also means less targets to be found. Your beach tips will be very helpful for me to find the targets. I can spend several hours detecting the beach with no signals whatsoever, so going to the right spots and looking for the right conditions is going to be paramount for me here. Thankyou.

      I appreciate that Sue!!! Keep in mind it could also be the TYPE of detector. What I didn't say in this video is for years the beach stifled me. I swung (previously) a Garrett AT Pro which is a great machine but not one built for salt and mineralization. The first beach machine that I bought was a Whites Beach Hunter 300. The difference was night and day!

      @@MetalDetectingNYC I'm using a Minelab Equinox 800 which struggles on some of the black sand beaches but others are ok. Likewise I also have the Garrett AT Pro but it doesn't work here on our pure black sand beaches so that's when I bought the Nox.

      @MetalDetectingNYC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sue Billing wow! I wonder if there is a work around for the NOX. I wonder if there are other NZ beach detectorists on TH-cam and what they swing. I have heard the XP Deus makes iron irrelevant better than any other detector but i have never swung one.

    Do you ever make fines up on the beach where people lay out in the sun? Do you ever intentionally search there? Or are you always between the high and low tide line?

    Hi Merrill. I will be metal detecting on the beach for the first time next week. Would you use an 11 inch coil or a 6 inch coil?

    • @MetalDetectingNYC
      @MetalDetectingNYC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bigger coil is better ….coil size gives you depth and separation is not an issue on the beach

  • @voyagertwoband
    @voyagertwoband 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Merrill, Thanks for producing this content. I'm fairly new to metal detecting. I did some research upfront and decided on a used BeachHunter ID that I upgraded with the 300 coil I had White's install and check the system. It works fine and I'm getting better with it. The discrimination is a bit of a joke other than correctly identifying iron, but that does save me some digging of rocks. However, yesterdday on Cape Code (Mass) rocks where showing up as rings - big rocks. Does this mean some no ferrous metals where in these rocks? Did I leave gold, silver or paltinum on the beach? Have you encounted this problem yourself?

    • @MetalDetectingNYC
      @MetalDetectingNYC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own the beach hunter. Great machine. Yes big iron can be very deceptive. The rule is to listen to the size of it (pinpoint on a a multi or VLF machine.....listen to the edges on a pulse). You can figure out the size.

    So Merrill, thank you for the video! I have a question. This is DeWayne Rosenlund again and the only salt beach that is near me is the Great Salt lake in Utah! Utah has some difficult laws about mental detecting however I submitted a email to hopefully get a permit to hunt the area I'm speaking about. Albeit these rings were lost in the late 1800s and early 1900s. My question is would they still be detectable? Obviously the Great Salt lake doesn't have tides, however wind drought flooding and just the weight of the gold. Would they be on bedrock after all these years? Thank you for your time and help with this matter Sincerely DeWayne

    Oh, and thanks for showing a dredged beach. Down here, we call it "renourishment", which is stupid because it pretty well KILLS the beach. But I might not have even bothered hunting a nourished beach, had it not been for this video.

    Awesome tips man! I’ve been hitting my local California beaches and finding some gold but it’s been quite an adjustment going from parks with thousands of sounds to a beach with maybe 20. I’m definitely going to look at the shore in a different light now thanks to you. Ok here’s my question, what’s been your best ring day? Like most rings in one day, maybe biggest ring, favorite ring? Anyway time to go watch your other stuff

    • @MetalDetectingNYC
      @MetalDetectingNYC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My best ring day was five. But the thing is, they were all silver or copper. Perhaps the best ring day was the day I got 1 Gold and 1 Platinum. I too detect parks, parks are great (have you ever tried the site historic aerials?) but they eventually are hunted out. The beach is very much like a slot machine. Some days give absurd amounts of treasure and others you leave with very little. The objects sink and when that sand is disturbed, the beach sand is like hitting a jackpot.

    • @MetalDetectingNYC
      @MetalDetectingNYC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another tip (because your experience sounds like mine) is to make sure that your detector is beach capable. Most beach machines are pulse induction or dual frequency. Some great park detectors are incompatible with the eroded metallic sands and the salt that is at the beach. When I got a beach compatible machine, things changed for me.

I have an equinox so it loves the beach, super quite and doesn’t false. • @MetalDetectingNYC
      @MetalDetectingNYC  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Kitty, ive gotten used to it but mine is very bulky. Having that said, a tornado can come through and it would be in one piece. The problems with non welded sand scoops is that the bar can break from the cup section with the holes in it. That happened to me once. Personally, I like this one on amazon: www.amazon.com/Lightweight-Diving-Garrett-Detecting-Stainless/dp/B01690SSJE/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=lightweight+sand+scoop&qid=1557103629&s=lawn-garden&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1(I have no connection to this product) The only drawback to welded is that you cant fit it in a suitcase (and there are screw on ones which you can). The one I recommended is lighter weight than mine but sturdy. I hope this helps!

    Merrill I used your location techniques on the beach. and it helped immensely. New Smyrna Beach in Florida is large from the dunes to the tide line. So much to cover. I usually work the waters edge... taking you advice.. Once i located my first couples of targets i tightened up my swinging passes and worked the area harder. this produced.. well lets just says i was digging for a couple of hours. Y'all listen to Merrill, he knows what he's talking about! my latest vid shows the results.

    Seen a few of your videos now, I'm just starting out detecting I have a low end detector Bounty Hunter IV, it was recommended to me not to even bother trying the wet sand as the salt water won't allow for good detecting with that particular device. However everything you talk about needing to detect as low on the shoreline as possible. I can adjust the settings to about half power, I have found a large object (pliers) and another piece of scrap metal but nothing else in the wet sand, is this because this detector isn't designed for this? Basically am I wasting my time in the wet sand with this device? Thanks.

    • @MetalDetectingNYC

      Yes. There is no way to configure a machine that is not designed for salt use in a saltwater environment. Look at the vanquish series of detectors as a cost effective upgrade.
